The Hydrologic Cycle

Lesson 4.2

HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
- a process that involves the continuous circulation of water among the oceans, air,
land and all living things.
- water has the greatest influence on living organisms.

STAGES OF THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE

Transpiration
- this is the first stage of the hydrologic cycle.
- it occurs when the sun heats the oceans and other bodies of water, when
plants lose water vapor through their leaves or when animal, including humans
perspire.
- the water vapor rises and evaporates into the atmosphere and cools and
condenses until it forms water droplets.

Precipitation
- the water droplets that had been formed during transpiration will then
increase in weight and eventually causing them to fall back to Earth.
- forms of precipitation can either come as rain, hail or snow.

Runoff
- refers to the water passing through the surface of the land and straight to
bodies of fresh water.
- some water infiltrates and penetrates into the soil and rocks, down to a
reservoir to become part of ground water.

Percolation

- it is the process of movement and filtering of rain water into several

layers of soil and porous rocks.

AQUIFER
- a layer of rock or sand that can absorb and hold water.
- serves as a storage for groundwater.
- may also be called a porous underground layer.
- can be divided into three types which are:

Confined Semiconfined Unconfined

- a confined aquifer - is located between - is found near the
is bound by both am confined and surface.
impermeable top and unconfined aquifers.
- collects rain water
bottom layers of
just from the land
rocks.
above it.

WATER TABLE
- it is the upper layer of the surface wherein the soil or rocks are permanently
soaked with water.
- the water table changes states depending on the amount of precipitation
- it is located near the unconfined aquifer.

RECHARGE ZONE
- it is an area very far from the confined aquifer that does not have am
impermeable layer.
- serves the confined aquifer as a supplier for rain water and surface water.

ARTESIAN WELLS
- are used to access the water located inside the confined aquifer.
- it uses high water pressure to lift the water to the surface where, it can be
collected.

- an aquifer can be disrupted by pumping water faster than the time it takes
for them to be naturally replenished.
- it could also pollute aquatic environments from runoffs that involve house
household, commercial, and industrial needs.

ROBERT E. HORTON (1875-1945)

- Father of Modern Hydrology
- was an American ecologist, engineer and soil
scientist who made significant contributions to the
study of the hydrologic cycle.
- pioneered studies on water runoff and flood
generation which all became of significant use in
understanding the basis of soil erosion.
- played a huge role in determining the
infiltration capacity of soil
- in recognition for his contributions, the American Geophysical Union
annually awards the Robert E. Horton medal to outstanding research in hydrology
