Whether!it!is!Coats!for!Kids,!Food!for!Families,!Special!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Olympics,!etc.!etc.!As!you!know,!I!could!go!on!and!on.!!!!
These!are!a!few!of!the!amazing!things!we!do!as!an!order! !
EVERY!DAY.!
!
However,!it!is!when!extraordinary!events!take!place,!that!we! !
do!extraordinary!things.!!In!the!last!month!or!so,!we!have!
seen!many!disasters!hit!some!of!our!fellow!citizens! !
throughout!our!nation,!and!beyond.!!It!is!at!times!like!these! Kenneth F. Latham Jr.

Recently,!we!have!seen!Hurricanes!devastate!first!Texas,!
then!Florida!and!most!recently,!Puerto!Rico.!!Also,!we!saw!a! !!!!!!!!!!!!
devastating!Earthquake!hit!Mexico!City.!!In!some!cases,!
!
MANY!people!are!without!power,!and!even!some!without!a!
home!to!live!in.!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

After!the!Hurricane!in!Texas,!I!issued!a!challenge!to!all! !!
Councils,!Assemblies!and!Chapters,!along!with!individual!
!
members,!to!help!our!brother!knights,!by!donating!to!the!
New!York!State!Disaster!Relief!Fund,!so!that!we!would!be! !
able!to!maximize!our!relief!efforts.!
!
As!of!this!writing,!I!am!proud!to!say!that!we!have!collected! !
over!$40,000!dollars,!and!the!checks!keep!coming!in.!
!
So,!I!would!like!to!send!out!a!big!thank!you!to!all!that!have!donated,!and!to!say!there!is!still!
time!to!get!a!donation!in.!
Another!topic!that!must!be!discussed!is!membership.!!Our!first!quarter!numbers!are!not!what!
we!had!hoped!for.!!We!MUST!step!up!our!recruitment!efforts!in!the!coming!months.!!If!we!are!
to!sustain!as!a!state!council,!we!must!bring!in!new!members.!!We!are!in!the!process!of!going!

Rosary.!Since!Saint!Pope!John!Paul!presented!us!with!the!Luminous!Mysteries!we!now!can!see!
the!totality!of!the!Catechism.!The!life!of!the!Church!has!been!enriched!by!meditations!on!each!
mystery.!

AMERICANS SUPPORT CELEBRATION OF COLUMBUS DAY
BY NEARLY 2:1 MARGIN
76 PERCENT SAY HISTORICAL FIGURES LIKE COLUMBUS SHOULD BE
JUDGED BY CRITERIA OF THEIR TIME, NOT OURS

Almost 6 in 10 Americans (57 percent) believe that celebrating Columbus Day is a good idea,
while only 29 percent oppose the holiday, according to a nationwide poll released today.
The survey, conducted by the Marist Poll, also showed that an overwhelming majority of
Americans (76 percent) believe that Columbus and other historical figures should be judged by
the standards of conduct of their own lifetimes, as opposed to modern standards.

Only 16 percent of those polled disagree. The poll found a

majority of Americans (56 percent) view Christopher
Columbus either favorably or very favorably. Half as
many (28 percent) take a negative view.
Columbus Day will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 9, by
countless Americans at Columbus Day parades and other
commemorations.

Knight Carl Anderson. He was a man ahead of his time,
who brought two worlds together and began the process that
led to the founding of this country. It is a testament to

We need too pick up our numbers on recruitment.
I do know that everyone has been working hard to recruit.
However, looking over the numbers, there are several councils that have not
Recruited one person.
There are over 436 Council's that have not recruited.

At the beginning of this month, councils should already be in the middle of running their Charitable
Service Outreach Week (Sept. 30th Oct. 8th).
Invite family members, neighbors, co-workers, and community members to participate in a worthwhile
charitable service programs. After they witness the good the Knights can do, remind them of the
Councils up & coming Church Recruitment Drive.
This should be held during the weekends of October 7 & 8 and 14 &15. These drives should explain
the benefits of joining the Knights of Columbus.

After the drive, remember the follow-up phase. Assign prospect names to recruiting teams for
personal follow-up visits. Within 48 hours, each prospect who completed a Membership Document
(#100) or expressed interest in joining should have had a personal follow-up from a Knight.

Retention. the act of retaining: the state of being retained

Or hold on to what youve got! Especially that which is valuable to you.

In the Knights of Columbus, I think you will agree, the most valuable asset we have is our members.
While recruiting new members is sometimes difficult, retaining them is sometimes even more
difficult.

The Knights face a lot of competition for families time so it behooves our councils to have good
programs that appeal to all members. A lot of emphasis is being put on recruiting younger members
and their families. While this is certainly true, we should not overlook those members who have been
loyal for 25, 30 or 50 years or more. It can be a difficult balance but worth looking to achieve.

Given that all of that occurs, lets talk about how to retain members with focus, this month, on the
new member. Lets call him Joe P. This is when the retention process starts. It is extremely
important to make Joe P. feel welcome and he be assured that if he needs anything or has any
questions, he just needs to ask.

If Joe P. is sponsored by an existing member, we all know that it is the sponsors responsibility to
insure that Joe P. makes all his degrees as soon as practical after he joins the order. Thats pretty
simple. However, that sponsor bares another responsibility and that is to personally insure that Joe
P.is comfortable with the council and its protocols. He should also try to engage Joe in activities; if
not to co-chair something to, at least, participate. Make him understand that whatever time he can
spend in supporting an event is a big help to the council. The sponsor needs to be POSITIVE about
what the councils does.

This is very important so please pay attention! If Joe P. doesnt attend 2 or 3 meetings in a row, his
sponsor should think that something is wrong and not assume Joe is absent for good reason. Just as
any brother would, the sponsor should call Joe to determine why he has missed meetings. If there is
a problem with the Knights, it can be settled at that point. More often than not, it is a reason such as
shift changed at work or travelling on business, etc.

If Joe P. was recruited after Mass at a membership drive, perhaps a council wants to set up a
process whereby some council members serve as buddies and assume the role the sponsor
assumes in the above scenario. These should be brothers who have been in the order for a while
and know how it works and have sense to know what they dont know and seek answers for Joe P.
Of course, the buddy should be willing to assume that role.

As you can see, a lot can be done BEFORE we get to that dreaded stage of having a retention
committee reach out to members who are in arrears in the payment of their dues and all of those
procedures that we will cover in upcoming months.
We need to keep Joe P. from ever approaching that process.

The!fall!is!here!and!we!are!into!the!second!quarter!of!the!Columbian!Year.!Installations!of!Officers!are!being!
conducted!and!council!planning!sessions!for!the!Fraternal!Year!are!being!implemented.!!

The!State!Training!Team!has!held!Organizational!Meetings!thoroughout!the!state!and!are!now!conducting!the!
training!sessions!in!the!local!conferences.!!

Western!Conference!held!its!first!meeting!on!August!24th,!at!St.!Gregory!Council!#14687!in!Amherst,!N.Y.!!!!!!!!!
The!purpose!of!the!meeting!was!to!introduce!one!another,!and!to!get!acquainted.!!The!DVD!about!Duties!of!
the!Grand!Knight,!and!How!to!Conduct!a!Council!Meeting!was!shown.!!Copies!of!the!DVD!were!distributed!to!
each!Vice!Chairman.!!Their!mission!is!to!work!within!the!Districts!to!provide!training!tailored!to!the!needs!of!!

the!councils.!!The!Vice!Chairman!makes!contact!with!each!GK!to!find!out!what!training!would!be!useful!to!his!
council.!!The!Vice!Chairmen!are!the!interface!between!the!GK's!and!the!Conference!Training!
Coordinator.!!There!is!one!Vice!Chairman!for!each!District.!!They!work!with!the!local!DD,!but!report!only!to!the!

Athletics!is!a!great!way!to!introduce!the!Knights!of!Columbus!to!young!families.!!
Parish!based!sports!activities!such!as!soccer,!basketball,!baseball,!swimming!and!
track!and!field!are!all!a!vital!part!of!the!faith!community.!!!Councils!that!sponsor!a!
sports!tournament!for!their!service!parish!provide!a!great!way!to!support!these!activities!as!well!as!generate!
potential!interest!in!the!Knights!of!Columbus.!!This!exposure!will!most!certainly!increase!membership,!
especially!for!younger!men.!!Increased!membership!and!participation!is!vital!for!a!vibrant!and!successful!

FIGHT HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITIES &
PARTICIPATE IN THE FOOD FOR FAMILIES PROGRAM
Did you know that more than 3 million New Yorkers rely on nutrition assistance programs all year long to
feed themselves and their families? Nearly 1 million of them are children.

To help stem some of the needs for food to feed our neighbors, the Knights of Columbus Food for
Families Reimbursement Program was established in 2012. Under this program, local councils,
assemblies and circles make contributions of money and/or food to local community food banks or
parish food pantries.

Councils and assemblies are eligible for a refund of $100 from the Supreme Council for every $500 or
1,000 pounds of food contributed. The maximum refund a council or assembly can receive is $500
per fraternal year.

Columbian Squires circles are eligible for a refund of $20 from the Supreme Council for every $100 or
200 pounds of food contributed. The maximum refund circle can receive is $100 per fraternal year.

The minimum contribution for a council or assembly to qualify for a refund is $500 ($100 for Squires
circles) or 1,000 pounds of food (200 pounds for Squires circles) for each food bank/food pantry
supported. Support may be provided to multiple food banks and/or food pantries. Reimbursement
must be applied for in the fraternal year during which contributions were made.

The Supreme Council recognizes that participating in this program can be time consuming for the
local council. Should a council choose to participate in this program, this will fulfill all four of the
Family Activity requirements for the Columbian Award.

In addition to a refund for contributions, councils, assemblies and circles are also eligible to receive a
Food for Families plaque (and, in successive years, date plates signifying years of participation) in
recognition of manpower support provided to food banks and food pantries.

senses!either!favorably!or!unfavorably.!!All!forms!of!media!(newspapers,!
magazines,!radio,!movies!and!Tv!have!inundated!us!with!so!many!advertisements!and!programs!that!would!
never!have!been!allowed!several!decades!ago.!We!have!grown!accustom!to!examples!of!sex,!torture!and!all!
forms!of!criminal!behavior.!I!will!admit!I!am!older!and!can!remember!Leave!It!To!Beaver!or!Lassie!or!The!
Lone!Ranger!and!how!many!of!you!can!claim!to!remember!Sky!King?!

We!often!have!premschool!grand!children!in!the!house!and!I!find!myself!changing!channels!to!a!more!
appropriate!broadcast!and!this!even!includes!monitoring!the!childrens!channels.!!The!slippery!slope!of!
inappropriate!entertainment!may!have!begun!with!Rhett!Butler!in!Gone!with!The!Wind!but!no!matter!where!
it!started,!inappropriate!entertainment!now!surrounds!us.!!

So,!for!a!moment!let!us!consider!what!we!can!do!about!any!of!this.!!!

1. First!acknowledge!this!is!a!form!of!spiritual!warfare,!the!enemy!forces!are!very!strong!and!we!can!be!
laughed!at!just!for!going!to!church.!Therefore,!apply!our!strongest!weapon!!prayer.!!At!all!our!
meetings!include!fighting!for!decent!media!in!our!prayer!intentions.!
2. Praise!good!media!when!you!experience!it.!!Are!there!local!publications!or!shows!in!your!area!that!
could!be!recognized!for!their!positive!content!and!absence!of!inappropriate!material?!This!could!be!an!
easy!and!yet!powerful!force!that!could!and!would!influence!productions.!Remember!there!are!over!
100K+!K!of!C!members!and!their!families!in!the!State.!This!action!could!lead!to!heavy!financial!leverage,!
especially!if!the!numbers!were!utilized.!!The!news!of!the!volunteers!aiding!Harvey!victims!has!been!
very!good,!we!see!good!works,!charity,!and!love!thy!neighbor.!!These!are!excellent!life!examples!
to!witness!and!to!emulate.!
3. If!you!have!a!bad!example!of!a!lack!of!decency!in!your!area!(we!have!one!bad!example!in!the!Rochester!
area!on!the!radio)!you!can!start!a!writing!campaign!to!the!medias!owners.!Then!you!could!begin!
contacting!the!sponsors,!who!often!do!not!know!where!their!ads!are!being!placed!as!they!use!media!
distributors.!We!have!developed!a!format!and!procedure!for!expressing!our!displeasure.!!I!will!admit!
that!we!have!failed!to!have!the!offensive!program!removed!but!we!have!had!some!positive!responses!
from!a!few!of!the!sponsors.!

Let!us!attempt!to!pool!our!resources!and!as!a!team,!make!our!world!a!little!better!for!our!children,!our!
families,!our!church!and!our!God.!

Brothers,
It is the time of year when we start planning for the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest and
start planning the Keep Christ in Christmas Programs!

Schools are now in session and Religious Education classes are starting. While every council is
affiliated with at least one parish, many councils are also affiliated with a parish school. This is an
easy way to get our children involved with the true meaning of Christmas. It has been my pleasure to
be involved with this program for the last two years and to see the posters that have been submitted.
The posters show that our young do understand what Christmas truly is. Last year, New York had one
of its submissions (Ashley Krohn, Council 209 in Amsterdam) receive Runner Up to First Place in the
11 to 14-Year-Olds category (you can view it here:
http://www.kofc.org/un/en/resources/service/church/poster/KCIC-Poster_Krohn.jpg ).

Each council should have a Keep Christ in Christmas program/committee. The Chairman should
see that the Religious Education Director of the parish and (if affiliated with a school) the school
principal to get the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest as part of the religious program of the
parish and/or school. It should be pointed out that the contest is broken down into three age groups
(ages 5 through 7, 8 through 10, and 11 through 14). The council should be ordering the have the
program ready to go by November 1st.

The website has information regarding the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest.

In addition to the poster contest, Supreme has available TV and Radio public service announcements
regarding keeping Christ in Christmas. Councils can easily run TV or radio announcements about
keeping Christ in Christmas by giving local TV and radio stations the DVD/Beta or the CDs. The cost
for the announcements is usually quite affordable.

Americanism is a thread that runs not only
through our Order, but throughout its history.
It ties our Catholic values to our nation and is memorialized as the Principle of the Fourth Degree.!
As American Catholics, we have seen our Order step up to the plate during times of war and
peace from providing canteens and services for our troops during wartime, disaster relief in times
of crisis, to ensuring that the words Under God were added to our Pledge to the Flag our Order
has proudly displayed its Americanism.

Two upcoming dates give us as Knights the opportunity to publicly display our Americanism while
memorializing and remembering those who served, those who responded, and those who gave of
themselves keeping us safe. September 11 marks the 16th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the
World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and downed United Airlines Flight 93 in Shankesville,
Pennsylvania. November 11 memorializes the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I, 99
years ago and also honors all our veterans as Veterans Day. What better opportunities to have your
Council, District, Chapter, or Assembly join hands with local parishes, the American Legion, VFW, or
other veterans organization, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and sponsor Memorial/Remembrance
Services. This display of both Columbianism and Americanism is not only positive Public Relations,
but may very well open the possibility of recruiting new members. Take photos of your events and
submit them to the local press for publication.

Our target date for Councils to place their Coats for Kids orders through KnightsGear will be October
15, 2017. (There is still Time)
Here are some ideas for Council involvement:
Fundraising and collaboration with local community organizations, for example, local Fire
Departments. Community organizations are often looking for ways to help families in need.
Coats for Kids is a great way to do

All Councils will be encouraged to participate by purchasing at least one case of coats, especially if
they have not participated previously, or if it has been some time since a Council last participated.
Appropriate and prudent use of social media (such as Facebook) can encourage participation from
Councils, individual members, supporters of the program, and the business community. Additional
avenues to publicize the program includes parish bulletins, diocesan newspapers, and local
newspapers.

Councils can reach out and encourage other parish organizations to purchase a case of coats
through our program.
Some resources to identify need can include: local schools, parish St. Vincent de Paul Societies, and
in rural areas, local police departments can generally steer towards areas of greatest need.

WHATS NEW IN THE WORLD OF PRO-LIFE ACTIVITIES?

It may seem as though theres not much happening these days in the realm of Pro-Life
activities. However, threatening things are happening around us which you may have missed in your
daily newspaper only because it is usually relegated to Page 19 or some obscure page following.
Lets look at some these very recent developments:

DATELINE CHINA: Chinese fertility centers are using genetic diagnosis to influence how children
conceived through in vitro fertilization will turn out. It is always threatening when researchers attempt
to take over the future of human nature. Tyler Cowan at Bloomberg worries that maybe well get
happier kids, but will they be less creative or less driven, or care less about others? That is only one
concern. He also questions even when parents get exactly what they want. After all, the current
mix of human personalities and institutions is a delicate balance which, for all its flaws, has allowed
society to survive and progress. (In other words, its not nice to fool Mother Nature!)

DATELINE NEW YORK STATE: Fearful the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn federal abortion
protections, a New York group is urging Governor Cuomo to support a convention to make changes
to the state constitution which, by law, can be held only every 20 years. The group Forward March
New York has pushed a constitutional convention to strengthen abortion rights, although it is unlikely
to garner the necessary approval from the republican-led state senate. But, at least one major
womens rights group, Planned Parenthood Empire States Acts, cautions that the move could
backfire, fearing anti-abortion groups could hijack the process! (Maybe our Game Plan?)

SPEAKING OF GOVERNOR CUOMO: Who are pro-life activists? Are they these extreme
conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are?
Because if thats who they are and theyre the extreme conservatives, they have no place in
the state of New York, because thats not who New Yorkers are! ~ Radio interview on 20
January 2014. (Excuse me, did I miss all the outrage over this?)

DATELINE ICELAND: Since parental screening tests were introduced in Iceland in the early 2000s,
the vast majority of women (close to 100%), receiving a positive test for Down syndrome terminated
their pregnancy, demonstrating Icelands success in eradicating Down syndrome births via abortion.
The nations population of 330,000 only sees just one or two Down births a year. This raises obvious
ethical questions as experience has shown that people with Down can lead happy lives. And what of
the case of a false negative screening? Iceland is unusual only in its universal screening. In Western
countries, a positive result also leads most people to choose abortion. Set aside the pro-choice vs
pro-life debate, its all still profoundly troubling. And not just because no one normally talks of
eradicating a disorder by eliminating the people who have it before they are born. After all, abortions
after learning the baby will be a girl are horribly common in China, India and other non-Western
nations. (But not exactly third world countries!)

CONGRATULATIONS to Christ the King of East Aurora Council 12829 for joining Supreme in funding
the purchase of an ultrasound machine for the St. Gianna Pregnancy Outreach Center, which we hope
and pray will save many future lives! (Which NY Council will step up next?)

On Saturday August 26 th
, 2017, various
Councils and Assemblies in Western
gathered at Christ the King Seminary for the
Annual Mass and RSVP presentations.

38 Seminarians received RSVP checks.

There were 29 seminarians studying at Christ
the King Seminar, five seminarians from St.
Marks in Erie, three men from the Hamilton
diocese and one from Ogdensburg.

This program was designed to assist

seminarians with incidental expenses they
may incur during their formation process.!

The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Robert

Wozniak, In attendance were Fr. Jeff Nowak,
Associate State Chaplain and State Treasurer
Deacon Charlie Esposito.

After the Mass and presentation, the Knights

and their Seminarians had a chance to
socialize over lunch.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

attendance.

Knights from Christ the King of Aurora Council #12829 in East Aurora , N.Y.
Raised $7,800 to help the Pro-Life office in the Buffalo diocese
to acquire 2 Ultra Sound machines to be used in conjunction with catholic health
systems. The Supreme council matched the funds raised by the council.
These were the first two in Western New York.

The!New!York!State!Knights!of!Columbus!erected!the!bronze!Cross!in!1926.!!The!Cross!was!dedicated!in!
memory!of!Fr.!Millet,!and!all!the!other!priests!who!brought!the!Faith!to!North!America.!

!!!!!The!original!Fort!Niagara!(Fort!Conti)!was!constructed!by!the!French!in!1678!at!the!mouth!of!the!Niagara!

 St. James Cathedral

St. James Cathedral is situated at the heart of Downtown Brooklyn whose streets bustle daily
with residents, students, commuters and tourists. Church bells have traditionally served as a call
for Catholics, amidst the business of daily life, to recognize God's presence and to follow the
melodic sounds to their Parish Church where the Lord is truly present in the Eucharist.

The lack of bells at Saint James has been an unfortunate reality for many years.
The necessity to strengthen community services and sustain Parish buildings has left the dream
of bells for another day. The Kings County Knights of Columbus are hoping that Brother
Knights, and Friends & Families of The Knights of Columbus will join us in support of this
project.

Please Help St. James Cathedral to Fill the Heavens with the Beautiful Sound of Church
Bells in Downtown Brooklyn once again

In Honor of Past Supreme Chaplain - The Most Rev. Thomas V. Daily Bishop Emeritus.

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, You
called Your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian
family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through
the example of his life and virtue may we follow Your Son, Jesus Christ, more
closely, fulfilling His commandment of charity and building up His Body, which is
the Church. Let the inspiration of Your servant prompt us to greater confidence in
Your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast.
We humbly ask that you glorify Your servant, Father Michael J. McGivney, on
earth according to the design of Your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the
favor I now present (here make your request), through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous Priests,
