2017 - 2018 - 1S

Academic level: Fourth semester "A"

STUDENT: Wilson Jefferson Camacho Jimnez

ACTIVITY 1
Label the next materials. Use the next words. Use the words from the box.

timber copper glass fyberglass mica

rock wool iron polyurethane

(a) fyberglass (b) timber

(c)rockwool (d) copper

(e) polyurethane (f) iron

(g) mica (h) glass

ACTIVITY 2
Read the section MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS and draw a
picture that represents each of these mechanical properties.

PROPERTIES PICTURES

TENSION

COMPRESSION

ELASTICITY

PLASTICITY

DUCTILITY
ACTIVITY 3
Read the section THERMAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS and complete the
next sentences.

Examples: The ability of materials to conduct or transmit heat or to transfer the kinetic movement
of their molecules to other adjacent molecules is called conductivity.

a) Rock wool, fiberglass, polyurethane are good examples of thermal resistivity materials.
b) The capacity of materials to oppose the passage of heat is called resistivity.
c) When the material temperature rises, the material size rises as well. This property is called
expansion.
d) One of the purposes of the separating expansion joints under construction is that the materials
can expand or lengthen freely when the temperature and volume of materials increase (get
hotter).
e) When the temperature is reduced (get colder), the material experiences a reduction of size.
This thermal property is called contraction
f) The capacity of a material to melt, to move from solid to liquid or vice versa is called
fusibility.

ACTIVITY 4
Read the section ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS and
correct the false information in the next sentences.

Example: Magnetism is a branch of physics that studies and unifies electrical and magnetic
phenomena in a single theory.

Electromagmetism.

a) The forces of attraction or repulsion are good examples of electric current forces.
The forces of attraction or repulsion are good examples of Magnetic forces
b) Electric current is the movement of electrons inside the material and it is measured in
meter/second.
Electric current is the flow of charge per unit of time that a material travels and
is measured in ampers.
c) Silver or copper are good examples of insulator materials.
Silver or copper are good examples of conductor materials.
d) Glass or mica are good examples of conductor materials.
Glass or mica are good examples of insulator materials.
e) Superconductivity occurs when cooling certain substances to a temperature close to absolute
zero their conductivity becomes virtually finite.
Superconductivity occurs when cooling certain substances to a temperature close to
absolute zero their conductivity becomes virtually infinite.
f) Conductor material refers to any material that prevents the transmission of energy.
Insulation material refers to any material that prevents the transmission of energy
g) The charges of electrical forces of the same sign attract each other, while those of different
sign repel each other.
The charges of electrical forces of the same sign repel each other, while those of
different sign attract each other.
