Facility: Outdoors if weather permitting, grass field

Grade level: 9
History: Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. There is evidence that shows
soccer being played as early as the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC in China. During the Han dynasty
people would dribble leather balls and attempt to kick it into a net.
Growth of the game that we know today is thought to have begun in England. During medieval
times it is thought that, the old game of soccer used to be much more physical and allowed
kicking, punching, and biting. Sometimes the competition became hostile and it wasnt
uncommon to see violence or brawls during these games. Taught using Jing.

Lesson #1
Subject: Soccer
Grade level: 9
Materials Needed:
10-15 soccer balls
15-20 cones

Standards:
S1.H1.L2* Refines activity-specific movement skills in one or more lifetime
activities.
S4.H2.L1* Exhibits proper etiquette, respect for others and teamwork while
engaging in physical activity and/or social dance (e.g., respect for self and others,
knowledge of rules, avoidance of inappropriate language, anger, management,
etiquette, fair play).
S4.H4.L2* Accepts others ideas, cultural diversity and body types by engaging in
cooperative and collaborative movement projects.

Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate teamwork using a variety of passing
techniques.
The student will be able to display respect for self and others.
The student will be able to interact with their peers in an appropriate manner.

Learning activities:
Warm-up: Have the students warm up by doing a few dynamic stretches first
such as toe touches, knee to chest, quad pulls, forward lunges. Next have them jog
down and back one full length of the court. Then they will perform high-knees
down, and butt-kickers back.

Activity 1: Have the students pair up and have them practice the direct or push
pass to a stationary target. This pass is generally used when close to a teammate
and is kicked directly at them. Make sure that they are using the inside of their
foot and not their toe when kicking the ball. As the students grow more
comfortable passing the ball, allow them to move back a couple of steps. As they
move further back make sure that they are keeping the ball on the ground for
safety purposes.

Activity 2: Thread the Needle: Prior to class, have about 6 pairs of cones set up
around the gym that will be about 5 feet apart from each other. These cones will
be the goals and the students objective is to pass the ball through these cones to
a partner. Next divide the class into 4 teams and have each student pick a new
partner of the opposite gender. After that you will split the gym into two separate
playing fields and two teams will play on each half. Now you will need to decide
which teams are on defense and which are on offense. The students on offense
will attempt to pass the ball through the cones to their partner. If they are
successful then they will score a point for their team, and must move to another
set of cones in order to score again. The defenders will try to prevent the offense
from scoring by stealing the ball. When the ball is stolen, the defending pair of
students will go on offense and vice versa.

Assessment:
Was the student dressed and ready for class on time?
Did the student fully participate and follow directions?

Activity 1: The students will pair up with each other and each group will receive
a ball. The students will then begin moving around the gym and practice passing
the ball back and forth. This should progress off of the previous lesson where the
students passed to a stationary target. The students are free to go wherever they
wish but they must practice keeping their head up in order to avoid the other
students.

Activity 2: The instructor will set up bowling pins on one half of the court and
will set up cones for lines on the other half of the court. The students will get into
groups of 4-5 students and will line up behind the cones. Each group will need a
ball. The students will dribble the ball to half court and will attempt to knock
down one of the cones. If the student knocks down a cone they will retrieve it and
bring it back to their line. The team with the most pins wins.

techniques.
The student will be able to display respect for self and others.
The student will be able to interact with their peers in an appropriate manner.

Learning activities:
Warm-up: Have the students walk laps until the entire class is dressed and ready to go.
Once they are all in the gym they will jog 2 laps. Next they will perform a few dynamic
stretches including lunges, toe touches, squats, and quad pulls.

Activity 1: For the opening activity the students will pair up and each group will need a
soccer ball. This activity should progress off of the previous lesson where the students
passed the ball to a stationary target. Here the students should be moving around the gym
passing the ball back and forth. This activity should force the students to dribble and pass
the ball with their heads up in order to avoid other students and accurately pass the ball to
their partner.

Activity 2: For the next activity you will instruct the class how to play defense. This will
include the explanation of tripping and yellow/red cards. You should also instruct the
students how to intercept the ball by blocking the passing lanes of the opposite team.
During this drill the students will now attempt to steal the ball from their same partner.

Activity 3: Now the students will get into groups of four and the court will be divided
into four different areas with cones. Two teams of four will play on each court. The
object of this game is to successfully complete 5 passes to your teammates. The opposing
team will attempt to steal the ball. Once the ball is stolen the teams will automatically
switch roles. Each team will be awarded one point for completing 5 passes.

Rules of Soccer
Rule 1 - The Field of Play

Rule 2 - Number of Players

Each team is allowed 11 players on the field at a time with a minimum of 7. Each team
will have 1 player designated as their goalie who is allowed to use their hands.
Rule 3- Duration of the Game
The game will consist of two 45 minute halves.
Rule 4- Kick Offs
To start the game, or start the game after a goal has been scored a kickoff will occur.
During a kickoff all of the players must be on their teams side of the field. The ball will
be placed in the middle of the field and must be kicked forward. After a goal is scored,
the team that was scored on will control the kickoff.
Rule 5- Field of Play/Out of Bounds
If any part of the ball is touching the side line, then the ball is still in play. Play will stop
when the entire ball leaves the playing field.
Rule 6- Scoring
A goal is scored when the entire ball travels completely over the goal line. One point is
awarded for each goal that is scored.
Rule 7- Fouls
There are 2 different kinds of fouls in soccer, a major foul or a minor foul. Major fouls
would consist of kicking, tripping, hitting, pushing, or holding an opposing player.
If these fouls are committed intentionally then they may result in a red card.
If a player receives a red card then, he must leave the game and cannot return to play.
There are also five minor penalties which includes dangerous play, illegal obstruction, or
charging the goal keeper. If a player commits a minor foul he may receive a yellow card.
After 2 yellow cards then the player must leave the game and cannot return to play.
When the referee stops play by blowing his whistle for a minor foul, the opposing team is
awarded a free kick. A goal cant be scored from a free kick.
Rule 8- Penalty Kicks
A penalty kick is given when the defense commits a major foul inside of the penalty area.
The team that was fouled is given a penalty kick from the penalty mark. All players
except the goalkeeper must remain outside the penalty area and penalty arc until the kick
is taken. The penalty kick must go forward and cannot be played again by the kicker until
another player has touched the ball.
Rule 9- Throw Ins
A throw-in occurs after the ball goes out of bounds. The team who did not touch the ball
last is awarded the throw-in. When throwing the ball into play, the player must have both
of his hands on the ball. The thrower must also have both feet on the ground and behind
the out of bounds line. The thrower also cannot touch the ball until it is touched by
another player and they cannot score a goal from a throw-in.
Rule 10- Goal Kicks
A goal kick is awarded when the attacking team kicks the ball out of bounds past the goal
line. Any player on the defense is able to take the goal kick. The opposing team must
remain outside of the penalty area until the ball completely leaves the goal area. The
kicker may not play the ball again until another player from either team touches the ball.
Rule 11-Corner Kicks
A corner kick is awarded any time the defending team kicks the ball out of bounds past
the goal line. The ball will be placed inside the corner arc on whichever side the ball went
out of bounds. The opposing team must be at least 10 yards away from the ball on a
corner kick. The kicker is also not allowed to touch the ball until it is touched by another
player.
Proper techniques
Dribbling- When dribbling the soccer ball, the student should use the inside of their foot
as much as possible and keep the ball relatively close to their body. As the student
increases their speed, then the ball might travel a little further away from them, but they
should still try to keep the ball as close as possible.

Shooting- When shooting the soccer ball the student should use the inside of their foot to
kick the ball. This will improve accuracy immensely compared to kicking the ball with
the toe.

Passing- When passing the ball to a teammate, the student should also kick the ball with
the side of their foot. The student should also anticipate where their teammate will be at
and attempt to lead them.
