EXPERIMENT-1
2-D DRAFTING
1. AIM
To generate the 2D drawing of Plummer block base with given dimensions as shown in diagram by using
appropriate commands in AUTO CAD

2. THEORY
A pillow block, also known as a Plummer block or bearing housing, is a pedestal used to provide support for a
rotating shaft with the help of compatible bearings & various accessories. Housing material for a pillow block
is typically made of cast iron or cast steel.Bearing housings are either split type or unsplit type. Split type
housings are usually two piece housings where the cap and base can be detached, while certain series are one
single piece housings. Various seals are provided to prevent dust and other contaminants from entering the
housing. Thus the housing provides a clean environment for the expensive bearings to freely rotate, hence
increasing their performance and duty cycle.
3. EXPERIMENT OBJECTIVES
Objective of the experiment is to:
1. Understand initial drawing settings
2. Understand methods/commands for drawing basic objects
3. Understand methods/commands for modifying objects
4. Understand methods/commands for changing properties of objects
5. Understand methods/commands for dimensioning & text.
4. SYSTEM REQUIREMENT
Computer with min of 1GB RAM & P4 Processor, Graphic card preferred to work with large file content.
AUTO CAD 2010 Mechanical
5. COMMANDS USED TO GENERATE DRAWING
Trim (TR)
Offset (O)
Mirror (M)
Line (L)
Circle (C)
Hatch (H)
Fillet (F)
6. PROCEDURE
FRONT VIEW:
i. Use the line command draw the base lines of the part and using layer concept generate different layers
which contains center line, continuous line, and dotted line

ii. Using the offset command draw the one more line which above base line and find out the intersection
point of center line and offset line and draw the quarter circle
iii. Quarter circle can be create by using trim command and circle

iv. Construct the remaining structure by using line commands after finishing the half part use mirror
command and create remaining part with the reference of center line

v. Give the hatching by using hatch command

vi. Give the dimensions to the constructed part by using linear and angular dimension command
`
TOP VIEW:
i. Keep the object tracking mode ON and draw the rectangle by using projections of front view.
ii. Draw the ellipse with minor and major axis are 16,22mm respectively
iii. Draw the circle with dia of 19 mm.
iv. Complete the 1 half part by using object tracking and projections of front view.

v. Using mirror command finishes the remaining part with reference of centerline.
vi. Draw big circle of dia 160 mm and trim on upper part and down part which is above rectangle.

7. APPLICATIONS
The generated drawing of Plummer block helps for
1. designers to create 3-D models from it
2. Production engineers to generate process plan when incorporated with production data like tolerances,
limits, etc
3. Communicating with suppliers with the help of orthographic and sectional views
4. Add as specification document along with model in PDM/PLM tools
8. OUTCOMES
Following settings/methods/tools/commands are learned while generating 2-D drawing of Plummer block:
1. initial drawing settings for units, drawing wizard, coordinate systems, SNAP, OSNAP, POLAR, GRID, etc
2. Methods/commands for drawing objects like lines, arcs, rectangles, hatching areas etc under DRAW
tool pallet.
3. Methods/commands for modifying objects like trim, extend, offset, copy, mirror, rotate etc. under
MODIFY tool pallet
4. Methods/commands for changing properties of objects like line types, link with layers etc under
PROPERTIES tool pallet
5. Methods/commands for adding/editing text, dimensions, etc under ANNOTATIONS tool pallet.
9. RESULT
2D drawing of Plummer block base is generated and printed as shown in below diagram.
