Project Overview:
Summary give an overview of the project (Limit 150 words)
Our school is starting to implement the STEAM concept with our fifth grade students. STEAM stands for
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. STEAM lessons are student-centered, hands-on,
collaborative and project (or problem) based. The students will be researching, interviewing, writing,
hypothesizing, videoingall sorts of neat things! The focus is on agricultural practices in our county and
we will use the 3D printer to create old and new equipment. In doing so, the students will get a deeper
understanding of the progression of agricultural equipment through the years AND they will learn to
utilize a piece of technology that is on the cutting edge.

Creativity Describe the creative elements of the project. (Limit 100 words)
The students creativity will be sparked by using the 3D printer to create farm
equipment. One creative element will be curiosity. Farm equipment to fifth graders is not
really too interesting, but throw in a 3D printer and their curiosity will be piqued. Another
creative element is the students ability to make new connections. They will never look at
a piece of machinery again without remembering the time they were able to use a 3D
printer to create their own!

Goals What are the goals and objectives for students? (Limit 100 words)
The majority of the students at our school live below the poverty line. There is no way that they
will have their own 3D printer. Technology like this is ever-changing, and our students are going
to be expected to know and implement technology beyond their K-12 education. We want to
give them an edge. A 3D printer can allow them to make a prototype of a piece of agricultural
equipment and analyze advantages and disadvantages between two different pieces. It would
definitely make the subject matter come to life and help their critical thinking capabilities.

Implementation How will you implement this project? (Limit 100 words)
Students are being given the choice of how to demonstrate their knowledge of the agricultural process in
Jefferson County. One choice is to use a 3D printer to create a piece of farm equipment from the past or
present. Students will do research on the internet and see in real life what farm equipment looks like
when they take field trips to local farms. Following that, they will have the information they need to
produce a prototype of their own using the 3D printer.

Benefits What are the immediate and/or ongoing benefits this project will provide students?
(Limit 100 words)
As a teacher, the biggest benefit I see with using the 3D printer to create a prototype of a piece
of farm equipment is the excitement the kids will have to be able to use a piece of technology
that they have never seen before, much less used! I have observed children using a 3D printer
and they are so interested in it. The printer can be used in the social studies and science classes.
For example, the students can make a 3D fossil in their science class.
