NUR 314: Nursing II Synthesis: Acute Health Problems

Course Description (copy and paste from course syllabus)


The course focuses on selected problems of individuals. The special focus is on the delivery of nursing care to individuals with
health needs. Students analyze environmental factors, political, legal and ethical issues. Case studies, seminars, clinical simulations
and interactive computer programs facilitate clinical application of critical thinking, communication skills and therapeutic
interventions.

1. Synthesize concepts and theories from the liberal arts and sciences and professional studies as the basis for
professional nursing practice of adult clients within a caring framework, as evidenced by :

a. Using theoretical knowledge, e.g. anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, psychosocial principles, spiritual/cultural
data and the like, in relation to adult health nursing practice.
b. Collaborating with professional staff and fellow students in the design of a nursing care plan and a teaching plan for
a client in the adult health setting.
c. Interpreting findings, including nursing, medical, laboratory, radiographic, pharmacologic, psychosocial and other
pertinent data, in the diagnosis and treatment of clients in the adult health setting.
2. Use critical thinking as a basis for competency in professional nursing practice of adult clients, as evidenced by:

a. Using client data, including biophysical, cultural, psychosocial, political, historical and spiritual, to diagnose, plan,
implement and evaluate care of clients in the adult health setting.
b. Establishing priorities when diagnosing, planning and implementing client care in the adult health setting.
c. Evaluating client responses to care in the adult health setting.
d. Identifying the need for change in professional nursing care based on evaluations.
e. Providing care based on the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.
f. Utilizing health care resources available to clients in planning for Discharge.
g. Computing and interpreting med math in relation to medication administration and intravenous administration in the
care of clients in the adult health setting.
3. Use effective communication in professional nursing practice, as evidenced by:

a. Using therapeutic communication strategies and patterns with clients in the adult health setting.
b. Demonstrating the ability to document using legal and ethical principles.
c. Demonstrating the ability to give an accurate and complete client report using ethical and legal principles.
d. Demonstrating the ability to provide adult health clients with needed illness/discharge care using teaching-learning
principles.
h. Demonstrating the ability to provide adult health clients with needed anticipatory guidance about illness and
discharge planning needs.
i. Demonstrate the ability to communicate with other disciplines about the patients care.
j. Demonstrate the ability to gather information from other disciplines and incorporate said information into the
patients treatment plan.

4. Provide caring, competent, and therapeutic nursing interventions in partnership with clients from diverse,
multicultural and dynamic environments, as evidenced by:

a. Providing caring and safe nursing care.


b. Safely administering medications, including parenteral, oral, and topical medications.
c. Safely administering intravenous therapy, including calculating drip rates, regulating drip rates, assessing IV sites
and maintaining infusions throughout the shift.
d. Correctly practicing Standard Precautions and using personal protective equipment.
e. Demonstrating clinically sound basic physiological assessments, including vitals, breath sounds, bowel sounds, and
the like.
f. Assuming the responsibility for involving clients in decisions of care that affect their health.
g. Discussing the impact of health and illness on an adult health client.
h. Identifying potential changes in nursing care when caring for culturally diverse clients.
i. Identifying patterns of commonality within and across cultures.
j. Demonstrating respect for uniqueness by providing humanistic nursing care.
k. Demonstrating the ability to care for an adult health client, including, but not limited to:
i. Performing and accurately interpreting a complete assessment.
ii. Providing theory-based interventions to an adult health client.
iii. Changing interventions after careful evaluations of client responses.
iv. Providing emotional support to the adult health client.
v. Irrigating GI tubes, including assessing proper tube placement.
vi. Administering tube feeding through NG, Gastrostomy, and Jejunostomy tubes.
vii. Urinary catheterization of male and female clients.
viii. Collecting sterile specimens from indwelling catheters.
ix. Removing a Foley catheter.
x. Knowledge of chest tubes and pleurovacs (closed chest drainage system).
xi. Performing tracheostomy care, including suctioning.
xii. Performing oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning.
xiii. Discontinuing an IV.
xiv. Hanging IV tubing and bags.
xv. Calculating IV drip rates (micro and macro).
xvi. Knowledge of 12 lead EKGs, cardiac monitoring.
