September 25, 2017
As part of the countrys yearly celebration of the National Language Month, Philippine Science High School Central Mindanao Campus took part in the celebration through a two-day event on August 31 and September 1 of 2017 themed Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago recognizing the national language as a language of change intended for the constituents of the school especially the scholars. In connection to this, the faculty of the said school spearheaded the two-day celebration that held 5 different events: namely, the Spoken Word Poetry and the Creative Writing on the first day and the Pista sa Nayon, the Tagisan ng Talino and G. at Bb. Buwan ng Wika 2017 on the second day. The celebration was made possible through the efforts of the school and the different committees and through the cooperation of all the scholars. The celebration was also made possible because of the effective communication that was present between the school as the source of information that gives out the activities and the scholars as the receiver that participates in the activities prepared by the school faculty. This celebration consisted of a main committee, 6 sub-committees and the scholars, each with different roles and functions. Firstly, the main committee was known as the overall committee or the event organizers that oversees the greater scope and the overall outlook of the Buwan ng Wika celebration chaired and vice-chaired by Ms. Czariza Mae J. Cortez and Mr. Jan Mellrick Dugenio respectively. The main committee assigns different tasks to each committees and, from time to time, checks on the accomplishments, status and reports of the different sub-committees prior, during and after the event. Next were the 6 sub-committees consisting of: (1) The Decoration Committee, chaired by Ms. Beverly S. Nobleza with Mr. Rolex B. Teologia, Marilou V. Cabili and Mr. Ray Jatico as the members, was tasked to oversee the design and creativity of the program including the stage decorations, arrangements and audiences area (faculty and staffs, scholars and guests) and also tasked to report back the committees accomplishments and status to the overall chairperson; (2) The Program Committee, chaired by Mr. Carl Kevin P. Sapio with Mr. Arvin Paul Sumobay and Ms. Annalisa G. Mortola as members, was tasked to oversee the flow of the program such as the itinerary, the start and end, introduction of the different events and speakers and many others and also tasked to report back the committees status and accomplishments to the overall chairperson; (3) The Pageant Committee, chaired by Ms. Perlita M. Requino with Mr. Rodel Marayan, Ms. Maria Luisa Cala and Ms. Mary Rose Gran as members, was tasked to facilitate and oversee the flow of the Bb. at G. Buwan ng Wika 2017 including the choreography, the pageant order and the awarding ceremony and also tasked to report back to the overall chairperson the committees status and accomplishments; (4) The Spoken Word Poetry and Creative Writing Committee, chaired by Ms. Rizza Marie B. Gonzales with Ms. Jove L. Cabanatan and Jefferson R. Pabalay as members, was tasked to facilitate the contest on poetry and writing and also tasked to report back to the overall chairperson the committees status and accomplishments; and (5) The Evaluation Committee, chaired by Ms. Maria Genile G. Caballero with Ms. May Flor M. Zaldivar and Mr. Joel R. Hubahib as members, was tasked to evaluate the program and celebration as a whole in terms of its location/venue, flow, resource speaker/facilitators knowledge and participation of the scholars and also tasked to report back any status and accomplishments of the committee to the overall chairperson. The organizers have also invited a resource speaker, Mr. Chem Pantorilla, imparting his comprehensive knowledge on the importance of the national language as a language of change to the constituents of the school especially to the scholars and a special guest, Ms. Juvina Gaye Brioso, for her special presentation of a spoken poetry in Filipino. Lastly, the scholars are expected to cooperate and learn the importance of the national language by participating the different events prepared by the organizers of the celebration, be it as a class, as a batch or as individual. The mechanics of all the events to be participated by the scholars were given by the event organizers, relayed through the class presidents of each sections and passed on to the whole batch. On the first day, the events were the Creative Writing and the Spoken Writing Contest with both contests requiring 1 representative from each year levels as contestants. The contestants for the Creative Writing were judged according to their outputs submitted, rated by content, grammar and creativity, with the said contest won by a 10th grader Jadel Dungog. The Spoken Poetry contestants were judged according to their pieces presented, rated by content, delivery of message, manner, confidence and audience impact, with the said contest won by an 8 th grader Kyle Valerie Yuson. On the second day, the events were the Pista sa Nayon, Tagisan ng Talino and Bb. at G. Buwan ng Wika 2017. The Pista sa Nayon Contest required each batch to prepare sets of Filipino food that it must contain three varieties of a particular food and judged according to creativity, delivery of presentation, knowledge of the presentation and cleanliness with the said contest won by the 12th grade. The Tagisan ng Talino Contest required 2 representatives from each class (except 7th graders) in which each representative would join the other year levels creating a six-member group of different year levels and judged according to their knowledge on Filipino language, with the said contest won by Stephen Ray Soco, Shania F. Gonzaga, Alexander Bello and Eleanor Radaza. The Bb. at G. Buwan ng Wika 2017 required a pair representative from each year levels as contestants and judged according to their talent, speech delivery and attire, with the said contest won by an 8th grader and a 10th grader, Nelsein Lagus and Jahshbin Malic Mayo respectively. Also, the resource speaker and the special guest had also shared what they know about the Filipino language through a formal talk addressed to the constituents of the school especially the scholars. The different events had helped in the attainment of the objectives of the celebration. It had helped instill the importance of national language through participating in the different activities. It had also helped promote the use of Filipino language as a means of communication. The activity was well-organized. The resource speaker/facilitator had demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and experience of the topic. The activities were also very strict with time where it started and ended on time as planned, that, in general, the time allotted for the culmination was enough for the attainment of the objectives. However, the venue was not that prepared by the organizers especially the audience lounge where some scholars were scattered all over the venue and stage decorations where it lacked creativity and design to add color and make the event visually appealing. In conclusion, it is good that the school have implemented this type of activity of the scholars to value the use of national language where it had invited resource speaker and guests from other schools imparting what they know about the national language to the constituents of the school. The event was made possible through the earnest efforts of the school faculty and utmost participation of the scholars. There was communication and coordination with the main committee and its sub-committees wherein there was division of labor among the committees for the event to be prepared well and realized. There was also communication between the event organizer and the scholars through the class presidents of each class where activities and its mechanics were properly disseminated to the scholars, and that scholars were required to participate in the activities. Hopefully, these type of activities or other similar activities would be implemented with a better facility and setting and there would also be more activities that would be implemented for the scholars in the future.
