Answer all Questions

Part A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. Why flexibility method is also called as force method?

2. Define local coordinates and global coordinates.
3. Define kinematic indeterminacy of a structure.
4. When do you prefer stiffness method?
5. Define interpolation function.
6. Define the term continuum.
7. State the upper bound theorem.
8. Define plastic hinge.
9. What are the resisting forces developed in a beam curved in plan?
10. What is catenary?
Part B (5 x 16 = 80 Marks)

11. A cantilever beam of length 15 meters is subjected to a single concentrated load of 50 kN at the
middle of the span. Find the deflection at the free end using flexibility matrix method. EI is
uniform throughout.
Or
12. A two span continuous beam ABC is fixed at A and hinged at supports B and C. Span of AB
and BC = 9 m. Find flexibility influences coefficient matrix assuming vertical reaction at B
and C as redundant.

13. A two span continuous beam ABC is fixed at A and simply supported over the supports B and C.
AB = 10 m and BC = 8m. Moment of inertia is constant throughout. A single concentrated
central load of 10 kN acts on AB and a uniformly distributed load of 8 kN/m acts over BC.
Analyze the beam by stiffness matrix method.
Or
14. A portal frame ABCD with supports A and D are fixed at same level carries a uniformly
distributed load of 8 kN/m on the span AB. Span AB = Span BC = Span CD = 9m. EI is
constant throughout. Analyze the frame by stiffness matrix method.

15. (a). (i) Write notes on discretization of structures. (6)

(ii) Derive the element stiffness of a 2D truss element. (10)

Or

16. Derive the element stiffness matrix for a 2D beam element using shape functions.

17. Determine the shape factor of a T-section beam of flange dimension 100 x 12 mm and web
dimension 138 x 12mm thick.

Or

18. A portal frame ABCD with hinged feet has stanchions 4 m high and a beam of 6 m span. There
is a horizontal point load of 40 kN at B while the beam carries a point load of 120 kN at mid
span. Using a load factor of 1.75, find the collapse mechanism and calculate the collapse
moment. Assume same plastic moment capacity for all the members.

19. Analyze the beam AB of uniform cross-section curved in plan and in the form of a quadrant of a
circle of radius 5m. The beam is fixed at A and free at B. A point load of 100 kN is acting
vertically downward at B. Find the shear force, bending moment and torsional moment at A.

Or

20. A suspension cable with 200m span and 12m dip is stiffened by a three hinged girder. Two point
loads of 500 kN and 700 kN are placed at the distances of 50 m and 75 m from the left end. Find
shear force and bending moment in the girder at a section 60 m from the left end. Find also
maximum tension and the corresponding slope in the cable.
