TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

I was struck by todays first reading and couldnt seem to

move past it: On this mountain, the Lord will prepare
a banquet of rich food for all people... He will remove
the mourning veil... He will destroy Death forever... He
will wipe away the tears from every cheek. (Is 26)

What a beautiful place this mountain must be!

I imagine a place where there will always be delicious food for all people, where no
one has to struggle to make a living, where there is no more poverty, fighting,
sadness, mourning, death, sickness, pain, tears... thatll be REALLY heavenly!!

And yet, as much as this wonderful image had often consoled me in the past when I
went through difficult or painful moments, there were also times when it provoked
more frustration than hope it felt as if this idea of heaven is that carrot on a stick,
dangled in front of me in order to keep me going, yet never within my reach. Until I
realised that I got it all wrong... this heaven is not just a possible reality in the future,
but God is inviting me to live it already NOW! Isaiah writes in the future tense, The
Lord will prepare a banquet for you; but our Psalmist speaks of something that he
experienced already in the present: God has already prepared a banquet for him, he
already finds rest and wants nothing, his cup is already overflowing and he feels
wonderful already! (Cf. Ps 23) Is it possible that each one of us can also experience
this heaven already, in the here and now?

Hunger, poverty, pain and death are very much a part of our human reality and we
cant run away from them. And yet, in faith, there is also a deeper reality that we are
called to live: one of fullness, of richness, of love, of life, of joy, of peace... these are not
just things we can hope for the future. It is already accessible to those who care to
join the feast. Im sure that each of us has had a taste of heaven that fraction of a
second when we experience Gods presence in prayer, or through a persons loving
gesture, or in a moment of deep peace or joy, or in awe at the wonder of nature...

In todays Gospel, Jesus tells us that the banquet is all prepared... everything is ready.
The invitation is made to each one of us in this very moment; God is calling us to live
heaven here on earth... COME!

We welcome our First Communion

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME
Next session: Sat, 11th Nov. 2017 at
3.30pm in Hume Hall, followed by mass
at 6pm.
THE CELEBRATION OF BAPTISM
If you would like to have your child
baptised on the 11th November or later,
the next session will be on Monday 6th
and 20th Nov. 17 at 7.30pm in the
Parish Hall. Please contact the Parish
Office to book your place on the course.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

If you wish to enrol your child/children
for the 2017/2018 Programme in
preparation for:
1) Pre- Communion (age 6-7);
2) First Communion (age 8 and
above);
3) Post Communion (children who
already had their First Communion):
please take a REGISTRATION FORM
from the BLACK FOLDER on the shelf at
the BACK of the CHURCH - fill it in;
attach copies of Birth and Baptism
Certificates of the child and return as
soon as possible to the Parish Office, 4
Vincent Road.
NOTE CHANGE IN THE PROGRAMME:
The Religious Instruction programme
for 2017-2018 will be held on
SUNDAYS 10am 10.55am.

ADULTS (RCIA):

Peterson, RIP will take place here, at St
John Vianney on Thursday 19th October at

CAFOD Harvest Fast Day RETIRING
COLLECTION
CAFOD Thank You for your generosity in
this Harvest Fast Day Collection: Our
parish raised 1,027.18. Your generosity
will help CAFOD works with poor
communities overseas on our behalf,
helping them to tackle poverty and
injustice.
INSIGHT (INTO LIFE AND LOVE)
Following the courses of Bible Timeline,
Mary and Epic: Church History, this course
offers an insight into fundamental truths of
Christian faith through prayer, study of
scripture passages, philosophical and
theological reflection and faith sharing.
Deepen your faith, and share it with others!

Tuesdays (7.30-9.00pm) or Wednesdays
(10.00-11.30am) in Jubilee Hall.
