The Development of Church, State and Society in Britain 1509 1745: A Timeline
1509 Henry VIII becomes King. He has 6 wives.
1534 Henry VIII makes himself Head of the Church of England, breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church.
1536 Henry VIII starts to attack the monasteries, confiscating their valuables and land.
1547 Edward VI becomes King. Hes sympathetic to Protestants. His advisors have most of the power.
1549 A new Book of Common Prayer is introduced. It is written in English, not Latin.
1553 Mary I becomes Queen. Shes strongly Catholic and reverses the religious reforms of Henry VIII and Edward VI.
1558 Elizabeth I becomes Queen. She never marries.
1559 Elizabeth I tries to change the Church of England so both Catholics and Protestants will like it.
1587 Mary Queen of Scots is executed. She was linked to Catholic plots to kill Elizabeth.
1588 Spanish Armada is defeated.
1603 Elizabeth I dies childless. James Stuart, already King of Scotland, becomes King of England.
1625 Charles I becomes King.
1642 Civil War begins in England between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians.
1648 The Parliamentarians win the Civil War.
1649 Oliver Cromwell now leads The Commonwealth republic. Charles I is executed.
1653 Cromwell makes himself Lord Protector.
1658 Cromwell dies and is replaced by his son.
1660 The monarchy is brought back (Restoration). Charles II becomes King after promising to rule with Parliament.
1685 James II becomes King. He was a Catholic and unpopular with the Protestants.
1689 James IIs Protestant daughter, Mary, and her husband William of Orange, take over the throne. James II runs away to France.
Protestants call this the Glorious Revolution.
1690 James II tries to get his throne back by raising an army of Catholic supporters in Ireland. But hes defeated at Battle of the Boyne.
1702 Marys sister Anne becomes Queen.
1707 The Act of Union unites England and Scotland.
1714 Anne dies childless. A distant German relation becomes King George I.
1715 A Scottish rebellion, against the Act of Union, fails.
1745 Another Scottish rebellion, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, also fails.
