1. A connecting rod weighing 19.6N oscillates 45 times in 1 min when suspended as shown in fig. 1.
Determine its moment of inertia about its centre of gravity, which is located 0.25m from the point
of support.

Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3

2. A mass m1 hangs from a spring k N/m and is in static equilibrium. A second mass m 2 drops
through a height h and sticks to m 1 without rebound as shown in fig. 2. Determine the subsequent
motion.

3. The oscillatory characteristics of ships in rolling motion depend on the position of the Meta
center M with respect to the centre of gravity G. The meta center M represents the point of
intersection of the line of action of the buoyant force and the center line of the ship, and its
distance measured from G is the meta centric height as shown in fig. 3. The position of M
depends on the shape of the hull and is independent of the angular inclination q of the ship for
small values of q . Show that the period of rolling motion is given by
J
t = 2p
Wh
Where J is the mass moment of inertia of the ship about its roll axis and W is the weight of the
ship. In general, the position of the roll axis is unknown and J is obtained from the period of
oscillation determined from a model test.

4. Determine the stiffness at m0, and write the expression for the natural frequency, for the system
shown in fig. 4.

5. Set up the differential equation of motion for the system shown in fig. 5. Determine the
expression for (a) critical damping coefficient (b) natural frequency of damped oscillation.

6. A thin plate of area A and weight W is attached to the end of a spring and is allowed to oscillate in
a viscous fluid as shown in fig. 6. If t 1 is the natural period of undamped oscillation(i.e with the
system oscillating in air) and t 2 the damped period with the plate immersed in fluid. Show that

surface area of the plate and v is its velocity.

1. Derive the equation of motion of the system shown in fig. 1 by energy method and determine
its natural frequency by Rayleigh method? Verify them using Newtons Laws of motion?

Figure 1

2. A circular disc of radius r, mass m and mass moment of inertia I rolls without slipping along
the circular arc of radius R as shown in fig. 2. Derive the equation of motion for the free
oscillation of the disc using Newtons law and the energy method. Find the natural frequency
of small oscillations of the disc.

3. A uniform cantilever beam of mass per unit length m and length l has a tip mass M as shown
in fig. 3. The deflection at any point can be approximately assumed to be given by the slope
deflection curve of a mass less cantilever beam subjected to a concentrated load at the end

given by y ( x ) = 3 - where y0 is the deflection at the free end. Using the

energy method find the natural frequency of the system considering it as a single degree of
freedom system. What is the natural frequency without considering the mass of the cantilever
beam.

4. A single degree of freedom quarter car model shown in gure 4 has the mass m = 250kg is

moving along a sinusoidal road having the prole y ( x ) = A sin L x , where A is the

amplitude, L is the wavelength and x is the vehicle traverse along the road. The damping
coecient of the suspension is 100Ns/m. If A = 5mm and L = 10m, what should be the
stiness k of the suspension so that the amplitude of vibration of the sprung mass m is less
than 2mm when the vehicle is traveling at a constant velocity of v = 50km/hr. For this value
of stiness what will be the amplitude and phase of vibration of the mass when the vehicle
speed increases to 60km/hr.

5. A torsional system consists of a disc of mass moment of inertia 10kgm 2 , a torsional damper
of damping constant 300 Nm/(rad/s) and a steel shaft of diameter 4 cm and length 1m (fixed
at one end and attached to the disc at the other end). A steady state angular oscillation of
amplitude 20 is observed when a harmonic torque of magnitude 1000N-m is applied to the
disc. Find the frequency of applied torque and the maximum torque transmitted to the
support.

6. The rotor of a turbine having the form of a disc is mounted at the mid span of a uniform steel
shaft as shown in figure 5. The mass of the disc is 15kg and its diameter is 0.3m. The disc
has a circular hole of diameter 0.03m at a distance of 0.12m from the geometric center. The
bending stiffness of the shaft is EI=1600Nm 2. Determine the amplitude of vibration if the
turbine rotor rotates with an angular velocity of 6000rpm. Assume that the shaft bearings are
rigid.
