COMPLETE ANALYSIS
ANALYSIS OF AN UNKNOWN SOLUTION

A. Physical Examination:
The unknown solution will be analysed according to the predominant ion present which can be
identified by the color of the solution.
Basis:
1. Color of the solution Ion Indicated
Bluish-green Cupric ion
Green or bluish green nickelous ion
Light pink in dilute soln Manganous ion
Deep pink Cobaltous ion
Yellow to brown (depending upon concentration) Ferric ion
Deep blue or greenish black Chromic ion
Yellow Chromate
Orange-red Dichromate
Lighter yellow than chromate Ferricyanide
Pale yellow Ferrocyanide

2. FLAME TEST;
Identify the ion present based on the color emitted over a non-luminous flame.
Basis:
Color of the flame Ion indicated
Intense yellow Sodium
Lavender through cobalt glass Potassium
Red or brick red Calcium
Crimson Strontium
Yellow-green Barium
Yellow-green Boric acid
Pale blue Arsenic
Emerald green Copper

B. Chemical Examination:

1. Reaction with litmus paper

Place a red litmus paper and a blue litmus paper on 2 different depressions of a clean and dry
spot plate.
Place a drop of the test unknown solution on the red and blue litmus paper. Observe the
change in color.
Identify whether the solution is an acid, a base, or neutral.

2.Cation Analysis

3.Anion Analysis
