NOTE:- THE PROJECT MAY IDENTIFIED AT THE BEGINNING OF 4TH SEMESTER

RATIONALE
Realising the great importance of student exposure to world of work for his
professional growth, two spells of industry oriented projects-minor and major have
been included in the curriculum. It is necessary that teachers to play a pro-active
role in planning and guidance of individual students for optimizing the benefits of
the activity in stipulated time.

Minor project work aims at exposing the students to industrial/field practices so as

to have an appreciation of size, scale and type of operations; and work culture in
the industries. Also the their application in solving field/industrial problems. The
work done in minor project work will also prepare them in taking up problem
solving at latter stage under major project work.

Some of the projects are listed below which is just a guideline for selecting the
minor project. Students can also select any project with the advice of his teacher.
1. Regulated power supply.
2. Timers using 555 and other oscillators.
3. Touch plate switches- transistorized or 555 based.
4. Door bell/cordless bell.
5. Clapping switch and IR switch
6. Blinkers
7. Sirens and hooters.
8. Single hand AM or FM.
9. Electronic toy gun, walker, blinkers.
10. Electronic dice.
11. Cell charger, battery charger, mobile charger.
12. Fire/smoke/intruder alarm.
13. Liquid level controller.
14. Counters.
15. Combination locks.

17. Telephone handset.
18. Audio amplifiers.
19. Tape recorders.
20. Automatic stabilizer/CVT.
21. Emergency light.
22. Design and manufacture of transformer.
23. Fan regulator.

If the project is linked to industry/field, the students may be asked to:

a) Study various types of materials being used.
b) Learn and Study various operations /processes.
c) Know about various measuring instruments and test equipment being used.
d) Study the plant layout and material handling in an industry.
e) Have knowledge about production planning and control in an industry.
f) Know about various quality control techniques and safety measures
adopted.
h) Prepare list of specifications of equipment and machines used.
(This list is only suggestive, however other problems may also be identified
depending on local industries)
For effective planning and implementation of the above, it is suggested that
polytechnics/institutes should:
a) Identify adequate number of industrial/field organizations and seek their
approval for deputing students for exposure/visits.
b) Prepare a workbook (which can be used by students) for guiding students to
perform definite task during the above-mentioned exposure.
c) Identify teachers who would supervise the students activities and provide
guidance on continuous basis during the project work.

The components and criteria of evaluation will include the following :

Component Weightage

a) Punctuality and regularity 10%

b) Initiative in learning new things 10%
c) Relationship with others/ workers 10%
d) Project Report/ Technical report 50%

MAJOR PROJECT WORK

RATIONALE L T P
- - 10

Major Project Work aims at developing innovative skills in the students whereby
they apply in totality the knowledge and skills gained through the course work in
the solution of particular problem or by undertaking a project. The individual
students have different aptitudes and strengths Project work, therefore, should
match the strengths of students. For this purpose, students should be asked to
identify the type of project work, they would kike to execute. It is also essential
that the faculty of the respective department may have a brainstorming to identify
suitable project assignments for their students. The project assignment can be
individual assignment or a group assignment. There should not be more than 3
students if the project assignment at least two to three months in advance.

Each teacher is expected to guide the project work of 5-6 students. The project
assignments may consist of :

- Handing different software and Surfing internet.

- Web Page Designing.
- Software Development.
- Networking.
- Web site designing hosting and maintenance using wed designing tools.
- Database Management system using oracle 8i.
- Management Information System.
- Developing application using Visual languages.
- Developing application based on C and C++
- Developing system software using C and C++
- Developing projects related to office automation.
- Developing software related to E-Commerce.
- Developing Interactive applications using Java Applets etc.
- Developing Internet application using Java script.
A suggestive criteria for assessing student performance by the examiner is given in

Important Notes:
1. The criteria for evaluation of the students have been worked out for 100
maximum marks. The internal and external examiners will evaluate
students separately and give marks as per the study and evaluation
scheme of examination.

2. The teachers are free to evolve another criteria of assessment, depending

upon the type project work.
It is proposed that the institute may organize and annual exhibition of the project
work done by the students and invite leading industrial organization(s) in such an
exhibition. It is also proposed that two students or two projects, which are rated
best, be given merit certificate at the time of annual day of the institute. It would
be better if specific industries were approached for instituting such awards.
