HONORING WOMEN IN CONSERVATION

Women In Conservation
A century ago, the Audubon movement came to life as a
result of the passion of a handful of dedicated women who
stopped the wholesale slaughter of birds for the feather trade.
In honor of Audubon’s Centennial Celebration,
Audubon South Carolina will present the Evelyn Thayer
Chace Award to five women who have made outstanding
contributions to conservation in South Carolina.
A nominee for the Evelyn Thayer Chace Award should
embody the spirit of the conservation movement and have
made significant contributions to preserving and
protecting South Carolina’s natural heritage.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from
www.beidlerforest.com or requested by
contacting astallings@audubon.org.
Nomination deadline is May 1, 2005

Pushed Birds Towards Extinction

You might say that Evelyn ‘Evy’ Thayer Chace was born into Audubon. Her grandfather, John Eliot Thayer, was the first Vice
President of The National Audubon Society at the time of its incorporation in 1905. Evy and her husband, Arnold, were Life
Members of Audubon. She served on the Audubon National Board from 1984 through 1990.
While serving on the Board she chaired the Francis Beidler Forest Land Acquisition Committee. Under her leadership, the
committee raised two million dollars and expanded the Forest by 2,000 acres. The campaign “over-the-top” celebration took
place on the lawn of her beloved Twickenham Plantation in the ACE Basin. That campaign provided the seed money and
inspiration that catalyzed what became, and is still today, a continuous and ongoing habitat protection effort in the Four
Holes Swamp watershed -resulting in the protection of over 11,000 more acres to date.
Evy helped create and nurture the philosophy and special blend of habitat protection, conservation education, and targeted
public policy that has made the Audubon Center and Sanctuary at Beidler Forest such a great success and model for other
Audubon programs across the US.
