Much can be learned from watching yourself in action. Firstly, it gives you the opportunity to see
yourself from another perspective, that of the learner (i.e., the students), rather than solely from your
own perspective (i.e., that of the teacher). This is an illuminating exercise in its own right, and also
provides the opportunity to further investigate and understand any feedback you have already received
from students or colleagues on your teaching. 1
The intent of this experience is to identify the strength and opportunities for enhancement of your
classroom presentation. Your review of the video may be accomplished as a personal experience or you
may invite your mentor, another peer, or even your executive dean to review the video with you. How
you complete the process of review is your own decision, but we request that the following checklist be
a part of the video review process. Keep in mind that the objective of the experience is to increase the
quality of the teaching and learning process at McHenry County College.
Another peer, coach, dean, or even the Chair of Faculty Development is available to participate in the
video review or as a sounding board in your formulation of ideas .
You are encouraged to consider repeating the video-taping in another class, another semester, or
again further along in the semester. The objective of this activity is to help you provide the best
teaching and learning experience to our students.

-Slowing down.
-Reviewing what will be happening at the beginning of the class.
-Slow down!!
-Reviewing what we are doing prior to starting class has been extremely helpful. The
students know and understand what we will be doing and what is happening next. There
is less looking at the clock throughout class.
-Slowing down has help the students take better notes, it allows them more time to write
out their notes, resulting in more detailed notes.

-Great exercise for new faculty! It should be repeated during our third year. It is a real
eye opener!
