Building the IT Infrastructure

Alfred is a do-it-yourself entrepreneur who built up his fortune in trading. He

traded in anything and everything, and kept close control of every activity. That was

how he had grown rich enough to indulge in his one dream to build a college in

his hometown. A college that would be at par to the ones in the better cities, the ones

in which he could not study himself. Work started a year back and the buildings were

coming along well. He himself did not use computers much and became hooked to

the Internet and e-mail only recently. He was determined to provide a PC with Internet

connectivity to every students and faculty member. He was currently engrossed in

plans for the 100 seater computer lab. What was confusing him was the choice of

Internet connectivity. He had about a dozen quotes in front of him. Recommendations

ranged from 64 kbps ISDN all the way to 1 Gbps leased line to Guwahati, which was

almost 200 km away. Prices ranged from slightly under a lakh all the way up to Rs

25 lakh and beyond. He did not understand most of the equipment quoted firewall,

proxy server, cache appliance. Nor was he sure what the hidden costs were. Although

it went against his very nature, he would have to identify a trustworthy consultant

who would help him make sense of the whole thing.

Questions:

a. In the context of the given case, what managerial issues need to be addressed by Alfred?

Why is it important for managers to be tech savvy?

b. What is the importance of a system consultant to an organization? What skills should

he/she possess?
Background Information:

Problem Statement:

The Manager is lack of technology knowledge and needs to know more about

technology.

Choosing the best internet connection for the IT infrastructure.

 Understanding the equipment and environment of the IT infrastructure with a

help of a system consultant.

Analysis of case data.

Alfred is lack of knowledge in technology. Our world is now, High-tech. Managers need

to know how to use technology because nowadays everything is operated by machines. They

need to know how it works in order for them to use machines and gadgets and after all it makes

our work so much easier. Technology has been very efficient and useful in all aspects especially

the internet.

He wanted to build an IT infrastructure which would contain a 100-seater computer lab which

would be used by the students and also the staffs. The number of computers must be match with

the internet speed. The higher number of computers, the faster internet connection you needed.

But first he need to know the equipment needed in building a computer lab and installing an

internet connection. For him to know all of these, he needs help from an expert, a system

consultant. The system consultant should possess are of course, first, She/he should know how to

operate a form of technology. Second, he/she should be aware of the problems that may occur in

the system of the organization in the form of technology. Third, of course, he/she should be tech

savvy and should possess the idea in solving the problem that may occur.
Discussion of several alternative solutions.

Alternative Solution No.1

Knowledge in Technology

First of all,He need to know first how to use computer and what are those commonly uses

of a computer.Like basic computer activity like using Microsoft Word,Exel and power

Point Presentation because that activity is very useful in terms of any paper works

especially your private informations etc.It helps you to save a time.In every organization

one of the most important application is your database because in database we can save a

lot of important data in your own organization and even your private information so you

must learn how to do it and how we can secure it.

ADVANTAGES:People are using computers to perform different tasks quickly and

easily.And you can understand what they do in computer and you may know how to do

or how to secured your personal document without carrying a lot of things or any activity

you do manual

DISADVANTAGES:The data stored on a computer can be accessed by unauthorized

persons through networks. It has created serious problems for the data security. People

use the computer for negative activities. They hack the credit card numbers of the people

and misuse them or they can steal important data from big organizations.

Alternative Solution No. 2

Hiring a professional and trustworthy person

 You can hire a computer professional person rather if you have a relative that

professional in using computer hardware and software activities that may helps you to

manage your infrastructure and you may able to teach you how to use and make some

basic computer activities that is very useful in everyday life.

ADVANTAGES: You dont even have a problem in terms of trust because if you hire

your relatives for being a Co-manager you dont have a doubt that he or she may cheat or

become a traitor to you because you really know her/him and what kind of person he/she

is.

DISADVANTAGES;It have a tendency in hiring your relatives that may be a big headed

employee or member of your organization.He/She may use his/her position to abused

others because he/she is a relative the owner of a organization or company.

I think the best solution in this case is to know how to use computer because in our

generation technology is the best way to abridge any activity like in computer some hard
works is can be convert in more easier way by using computer we can store a lot of data

without using a lot of paper and we can secure it without worrying a lot of thing when

Alfred know how to use computer even if it is hardware or software servicing and

activity,he can manage his own company properly and even for being a system consultant

he can do and specially he can understand some activity,systems,databases and security

who developed by the other programmer or developer.And i think this is also the answer

in question number 1 and number 2.
