COACH AND PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
The Cornwall Coach and Player Development Pathway is a strategy that supports both the
Vision Statement of the Cornwall Junior Club and the Auckland Cricket Association Coaching
Philosophy:
This means that the coach is not judged on the result of the game. The real test is if the players
are enjoying themselves, looking forward to coming back next week, learning, and playing
hard but fair.
In their approach to coaching, coaches can ask questions, set up situations which encourage
players to solve problems and can share the ownership of the team by allowing players to have
a role in decision making. The result of such an approach will be players who feel valued and
respected, are innovative, self-aware and less coach dependent.
Coaching is about developing better people, no matter what age or ability, not just better
cricketers.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE
The aim of this strategy is to provide a clear and transparent pathway for players and coaches
through all grades. The objective is to lead the way nationally in player and coach
development at club level.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Cornwall Coach and Player Development Pathway is to lay the foundations
that will enable our players to learn and grow as cricketers; to develop the necessary core
skills to be competitive; to excel in years to come; and, to create a culture of excellence.
With a greater number of confident and motivated coaches, the opportunity for players to
excel will increase exponentially. Players who have regular exposure to qualified and
experienced coaches are more likely to stay in the game longer, and 'good' cricketers stand a
greater chance of becoming 'great' cricketers.
CODE OF ETHICS
An important aspect of the coaching philosophy that Cornwall adopts is to ensure both
coaches and players have a positive experience at Cornwall, and that the competitive
elements of the game do not take precedence over the concept of fair play, and the Spirit of
Cricket. The values espoused in the Coaches Code of Ethics bear this out (refer APPENDIX 1:
COACHES CODE OF ETHICS). It is important that all coaches are familiar with this code, and
adhere to it diligently.
Coaches: All coaches are extremely important at this stage of a players development. Team
and parent coaches are strongly encouraged to attend coaching sessions run by Cornwall,
where they will be shown basic skills, games and ways of coaching younger cricketers
(Teaching Games for Understanding or TGfU for short). In addition, the club will run and/or
provide assistance to gain the first coaching qualification available (Have a Go and Kiwi
Cricket).

Years 5-6 (Juniors):
Players: In this Development phase, players start to use hard cricket balls and full cricket gear.
Hard ball courses are available to help build confidence in our young players. Teams begin
grading based on ability, and representative teams are named to compete in annual
traditional fixtures. Talent ID will start with the representative players in this development
phase.
Coaches: Coaches are expected to understand and demonstrate the basic fundamentals and
technical aspects of cricket. New coaches will be able to attend coach the coaches sessions
run by Cornwall and more advanced coaching courses will be run to up-skill coaches.
Representative coaches are required to report on representative players as part of the Talent
ID system. In addition, the club will run and/or provide assistance to gain the next step of
coaching qualification available (Development Coaching Stage One and Development
Coaching Stage Two).
Coaches: Coaches are expected to understand and demonstrate advanced technical aspects
and fundamentals of the game. New coaches will be able to attend coaching the coaches
sessions run by Cornwall and more advanced coaching courses will be held to up-skill coaches.
All coaches are required to report on players abilities through the Talent ID system. In
addition, the club will run and/or provide assistance to gain the next step of coaching
qualification available (Development Coaching Stage One and Development Coaching Stage

Coaches: Coaches are expected to understand and demonstrate advanced technical aspects
and fundamentals of Cricket. Coaches are also required to have the ability to demonstrate
one skill (i.e. Batting, Spin Bowling, Wicket Keeping, Pace Bowling and Fielding) at a specialist
