Dear Wonderful Families,

Science Fun:
They students conducted an investigation to answer the question: What are the characteristics
of living and nonliving things? In order to find the answer, they collected observations using
microscopes, analyzed data, and asked further questions.
They asked deep questions, like:
Are fingernails and hair living or nonliving?
If hair is not alive, but it grows, is hair made out of cells?
At what point is something considered a nonliving thing?
They also discovered that the definition, all living things are made out of cells, is not a perfect
definition.

Science: Our first Science unit is on cells and the human body. Throughout the year, our focus
will be systems. The students will learn how a cell is a system, and how each part of the system
works together for the cell to function. They will then use their knowledge of cells to connect
how cells make up tissues, and tissues make up organs. They will discuss how the body is a
system of many systems working together. The class will learn about the immune system and
learn it supports the body.

Core Knowledge Standards:

Human Body
Immune System
Diseases

Next Generation Standards:

MS-LS1-1 Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that all living things are made of cells.
MS LS1-3 Argue How: The Body is a System of Interacting Subsystems composed of groups of cells.
MS-LS1-8 Gather and Synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending
messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories.

Greek Day Summary:
October 30th
PLEASE GET CLEARED IN THE OFFICE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND GREEK DAY.
PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO OBSERVE THE LIVING MUSEUM(8:30-9:30)
OR HELP OUT WITH THE GREEK OLYMPICS (2:00-3:00).
Greek Day is a day dedicated to demonstrating what we have learned. In the morning, we will
have a living museum. This is when the students come dressed up as their god/goddess/or
hero. (An easy/inexpensive costume is using white fabric and wearing it like a toga.) They will
have a speech and poster prepared to teach the second graders about their god/goddess/or
hero. At the end of the day, the students will re enact the original Greek Olympics with the
second graders.
October 31st
The following day, October 31st, they will present their speech to the class. PLEASE EMAIL
ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO OBSERVE THEIR PRESENTATIONS, OCTOBER 31st, FROM
8:30-9:30.

Preparing for Greek Day:

Help your child with god/goddess/hero research-
Students will be working on this at home. When it comes to research, the students will use the
three search engines below; however, please guide them in their search. With Greek
Mythology, I need your assistance at home to make sure students are searching safely
because of the odds of coming across a nude statue. If a student needs to look up a picture of
their god/goddess/ or hero please assist them by finding a photo for them.
