far earlier than was ideal.
Kate was due to make an
appearance with William to
drop George off at his first day
of school, however, she was too
ill, which prompted the palace
to release the happy news.
In each of her pregnancies,
Kate has stepped out for her
first appearances around six
weeks after the public were
made aware of her pregnancies,
indicating she is very close to
entering her second trimester.
And a source close to the
Middleton family says Kate and
William believe the worst is
behind them, adding, She has
had such a rotten time during
these early months, but shes
out of the woods now and
doing well.
While it seems Kate is doing
a little better this time around
than her first two pregnancies
her first with George was said
to be particularly nasty and she
was hospitalised during her first
few weeks of pregnancy there
is no indication shes quite ready
to return to full royal duties,
though insiders say its only
a matter of weeks.
The news will come as a
welcome relief to the Queen,
who has taken more of a
step back in recent months,
delegating more of her official
and grandchildren.

for the Cambridges. George
has just started school

engagements. She and William
are due to embark on an official
overseas tour next month the
details of which have yet to be
released by the palace and
she is excited to move Heads
Together into its next phase.

remarked on the duchess
event while still feeling under

Minds, remarked that she
was amazing, adding, What

individual areas of focus. She
had seen that at the core of
adult issues like addiction and
family breakdown, unresolved
childhood mental health issues
were often part of the problem.

wasnt enough to help veterans
recover from their physical
injuries without acknowledging
the emotional and mental
support they required.
And after years of working
with the homeless, and having
been called out to multiple
scenes of suicide as a Search
and Rescue and then HEMS
pilot, I understood the damage
poor mental health was causing
to our communities and for
our families.

she couldnt leave the house.
But now, a year after her
latest bout of overwhelming
sadness, Miranda (44) says she
has used her experiences to
write a childrens book called
The Girl with the Lost Smile.
The star of her own sitcom
says shes feeling good now,
but this time a year ago,
she was fighting feelings of
isolation and self-pity. It
skewed her outlook on the
world, she reveals.
When a low mood sinks
in, you find yourself almost
revelling in the awful world
news and feeling self-pityingly
about the tiniest things. I went
into a fury simply because I
couldnt find a Biro. Its easy to
spiral into seeing just the
negative around us and then
simply not smiling. I found
nothing could prompt an
upward turn to my mouth.
Miranda pulled out of
several commitments,
including hosting the Royal
Variety Performance and
returning to her role as
Chummy in the TV series
Call the Midwife. Succumbing
to that old back to school
feeling made her realise
how many people were
struggling with similar issues.
BLUE LADY
It struck me how there were
so many people in the world for
whom there is genuinely very
little, if anything, to smile about.
And they are often the ones
who keep doing so, who
put on a brave face, staying
cheery despite everything.
Thats partly why she wrote
The Girl with the Lost Smile,
Its easy to spiral
into seeing just the
negative around
us and then simply
not smiling
about an 11-year-old who
has all kinds of adventures
when she goes in search of
her missing smile. That was
a story from the heart.
She believes genes are
partly responsible for her
depression. A sort of anxiety
runs in the family. Its just bad
genes bad luck, really. Ill
always have to force myself to
see the positive because I am
wired badly, Id say.
Mirandas family has an
aristocratic background there
are numerous earls and dukes
among her ancestors, and
she is the fourth cousin, twice
removed, of Princess Diana.
Her father Captain David Hart
Dyke was an officer in the Royal
Navy and in command of the
destroyer HMS Coventry, which
was sunk during the Falklands
War. Nineteen of his men were
killed and he was missing
for several days. He suffered
severe burns in the attack.
Several years later, David
was sent to the US for work, so
when she was 11, Miranda was
sent to boarding school for girls.
Shy and awkward, she stood out
at 1.85m tall, but says it wasnt
too torturous.
But at university, where she
studied political science, she felt
awkward and unfeminine, and
by the time she graduated,
she was suffering from severe
anxiety and agoraphobia. She
moved back in with her parents
and was unable to leave the
house. I thought the world was
a bit scary. I just hid in a room in
the house and didnt really go
out. It was my blip.
Antidepressants helped
although they also led to weight
gain but she has since had
more bouts, including one
following the break-up of a
long-term relationship in 2007.
Getting her dog Peggy, who she
wrote about in the book Peggy
and Me, helped on that occasion.
I was lonely, isolated,
depressed and uncertain
I could ever love or be loved
again. I was grateful to have
something to cuddle... I felt
my heartbreak recede.
She was thrilled when her
sitcom Miranda which started
out as semi-autobiographical
skits at comedy festivals before
becoming a radio show and
then TV series became a huge

hit in 2009. But the pressure that
comes with success took a toll.
She seriously thought about
quitting her career at the end of
2012. I got to a point when it
was all a bit too much and I was
quite lonely, and was struggling.
I thought, Is it worth it?

But she talked herself out of
her low spirits. You find ways to
manage your life that means
you are not in that place.
Today she is doing well.
She recently finished a stint in
the West End musical Annie,
playing orphanage boss Miss
Hannigan, which she says was
a dream come true. And shes
appearing alongside Keira
Knightley, Dame Helen Mirren
and Morgan Freeman in the
movie The Nutcracker and the
Four Realms, due to be released
next year.
Although she finds it difficult
not to be hard on herself, she
is getting better at taking
praise and cant imagine doing
anything else. The best thing is
hearing a laugh. It dawned on
me recently that I am allowing
myself to think, The sitcom I
wrote did all right. I have had
so much lovely feedback and
I feel now, as I get older, that
is my mandate to work. Its just
not to work and make people
laugh, its for escapism.

South Korea, and grew
up in New Zealand. In
2012, at the age of 15, she
won the Canadian Womens
Open title, making her the
youngest winner on the Ladies
Professional Golf Association
(LPGA) tour.
In 2015, she became the
worlds number-one-ranked
woman professional golfer,
the youngest person ever to
do so. Lydia has achieved 14

silver medal at the 2016 Rio
Olympic Games, was named

What really matters to you?
It matters that Im happy with
the choices Ive made and the
life Im living. No matter what
I do whether its my sport,
my studies or whatever I do
once I retire from golf the
bottom line is that Im content
with my choices. I didnt come
from a golfing family, but my
mums sister was a golfaholic.
Whats special
about golf is chasing
those good days on
the green. Those
days bring you back
She was a professor and in
her spare time she played. One
day, I went out with her and she
offered me a go with her club
when I hit the ball without
falling over, I think she was
very impressed! Thats where
it started for me. Theres just
no feeling of joy or success
I can compare to that feeling
when you hit the ball just the
way you imagined in your head.
Every sport is special in its
own way, but for me, whats
special about golf is chasing
those good days on the green.
And its those good days
that bring you back. Both
professional and weekend
golfers all have those bad days,
when they throw down their

clubs and say, Im never
coming back Im never playing
this game again. But theyre
back the next weekend, chasing
those memorable shots.
Finding the moments of
happiness in what I do has
been a big lesson, because I
sacrificed a lot of things to get
to my current level. I remember
sitting in class when I was 12 or
13, not wanting the day to end
because I knew the afternoon
would be spent practising.
I loved golf, but I also loved
my friends, and I was at the age
when you want to be going to
sleepovers and watching a junior fan is, Youre

community as though theyd
known each other all their entire
lives regardless of race or
culture and in spite of the
negative narratives defining
how we should engage with
one another, and these make
me feel happy and hopeful.
What do you regard as the
lowest depth of misery?
Racism and sexism really
disappoint me because were
the same. We might not
understand someone else, but
when you peel back the layers
of a person, you see that they
all have families, they all have
parents and they go to work
every day. Im a professional
golfer, but I go to work every
day the same as anyone else.
The sporting world is
notoriously sexist and,
historically, golf has been
viewed as a mens game. A
male golfers prize money can
be as much as four times higher
than that of a female winner.
I think, What? Why? We
dont play fewer rounds than
the guys and its not like
were less talented. I hope
that one day the game will
be equal because theres no
reason it shouldnt be.
There are so many legends
who have walked this path and
Lydia is proudest when

their role model and
happiest when she feels
the support of her family,
especially her mum (right).

THE DOCTOR FOSTER STAR HAS SOME ADVICE FOR LOVE CHEATS

S
uranne Jones has gripped
TV audiences worldwide,
first through her portrayal
of young Karen Phillips each
week feuding with her arch-rival
Tracy Barlow, and marrying
Steve McDonald (twice!) on
Coronation Street, which blitzed
TV viewership numbers.
After four years, Suranne
left the show to get a sense of
normality back in her life, but
found herself busier than ever
with a slew of roles, including
a stint on Doctor Who.
However, her most acclaimed
role came last year when she
took the titular character in
the series Doctor Foster. The
thriller follows the life of a GP
whose life begins to unravel
when she suspects her husband
of infidelity, and saw Suranne
scoop four different awards for
her acting, including the British
Academy Television Awards for
leading actress.
Now, Suranne has returned
to the role for a second series,
currently playing here on TVNZ 1.
The Weekly caught up with her to
talk about the show, her time on
Coro and visiting New Zealand.
Youre back with a second
series of Doctor Foster.
What would you like the
shows legacy to be?
Hopefully, it will make people
think twice about divorce or
having an affair in the first
place! I certainly hope it makes
people think about how they
conduct themselves, if they do
split with somebody preferably
its not like these two do! Were
not trying to give out social
messages, though, so just as
long as people are enjoying the
ride of two people, who really
hate each other, having to live
in the same space and breathe
the same air, then thats good.
Why do you think people
loved the first series so much?
Having talked to quite a lot
of people now, I think the
fear of infidelity is a tangible
feeling for anyone whos in a
relationship, or anyone whos
had a relationship whether
theyve been betrayed or not.
Its that feeling of what if
when you watch a couple, in an
everyday domestic situation,
and see the devastation and the
repercussions of something like
this happening, knowing and
fearing that it could happen
to you too. Then, of course,
the revenge side of it is the
bittersweet, sexy part that keeps
people hooked because you do
wonder What would I do in
that situation? On top of that,
the writing is quite dark and I
get to do things that are very
dramatic and theatrical, which
is great for me. Its like playing
the baddie but dressed up
in a middle-class Marks &
Spencer outfit!
How has becoming a mum
yourself affected playing
a mum in Doctor Foster?
I think any actor can play any
role, or imagine themselves
in any role, so I could have
played a mum without being
a mum myself. Actually, I have
played mothers, like in the first
series. But I think what its
done, being a mum and a wife
myself, is its made me realise
the gravitas of that unit falling
apart and the enormity of the
situation when two people
separate and you have to
raise a child on their own,
because Id go home at
night after filming and
have a baby to put to bed.
It has also given me a
better understanding of the
devastation of someone
betraying that marriage and
made me realise that when two
people get together and they
have a child, out of love,

to parent a child on your own,
and be in each others lives
when you are damaged and
hurt, without damaging and
hurting the child.
Also, I went back to work
after just six months and we
were filming 14 hours a day
so I was still really tired and
full of hormones! I was all
over the place because I was
completely hormonal, which
helped in portraying this role.
What are your feelings about
Coro, now that youve been
away from it for a few years?
I had the most amazing four
years while I was on Coro
because my character became
so big and the public really
got behind Karen MacDonald.
That [period] was like my
university time we went
to loads of parties, the opening
of everything and did all the
lads mags. It was fun and I have
very happy memories of Coro.
Ive got a lot of great mates
from then, like Antony Cotton,
Jennie McAlpine who plays
Fiz, and is one of my best
friends and Sally Lindsay,
whos also one of my best
friends. Its filmed in Manchester mum and dad! So, yeah, I
too, which is my hometown, have very happy memories
so that was great. of being in New Zealand.

ne of New Zealands most beloved
and successful athletes, Dame Susan
Devoy was thrust into the limelight after
becoming a world squash champion in 1985.
Weekly writer Robyn Scott-Vincent spoke with the
sports star about how her life was rapidly changing.

I
t is not just royalty who have
to mind their manners, kiss
babies and smile nicely for
persistent photographers.
Susan Devoy, New Zealands
latest world champion (of
squash), is having to learn that
craft as she discovers there is
more to being number one than
winning trophies.
September 10 was Susans big
day the champ had returned
from her victory in Ireland and
her family and friends were out
in full force to meet her at
Aucklands International Airport.
But as she walked through
customs, the 21-year-old
heroine braced herself not for
hugs and tearful reunions, but
for the media repetitive
questions, posed photographs.
Yes, she was thrilled to win.
No, she was not contemplating
retirement. Susan answered
politely, looking small and tired
in her black and white tracksuit.
Upstairs in the reception
lounge, a victory Champagne
breakfast was underway.
Between more interviews, Susan
snatched cuddles with her
nieces and nephews, then
returned to discussions with
sponsors, her smile never
fading, despite the long flight
she had just endured.
Three hours later, she was
finally alone with her family.
Later still, the Devoys moved in
convoy back home to Rotorua
but not for long.
The next day, Susan was on
the road to Hamilton, then
on to Auckland for interviews,
promotional work and an
exhibition match before about
200 fans at the Canon Eden-
Epsom Squash Club.
By the morning of the match
with Stephen Cunningham,
Susan was suffering from jet lag,
but the show had to go on.
And what a show she gave,
pulling a curtain over her
tiredness, joking and teasingly
challenging her opponent, to
the delight of her audience.
By the end of it all, Susan was
visibly exhausted and retreated
to the changing room. Later,
she emerged composed once
more to mingle with her fans,
responding to the constant
barrage of questions.
Such attention is relatively
new to the young sportswoman.
It began last year when she
surprised the squash world
by taking the British Open

She admits, Sometimes
I really love all the fuss and
publicity, other times I hate it.
But she puts up with it all
because of her belief that
she is an ambassador for the
sport and this country.
I look at some of the people
I played and think, Gosh,
they could do the sport so
much harm. Many dont realise
that, even if you dont want to,
you have got to stay and talk
to sponsors. You cant wear
jeans to prizegivings. They
behave badly on court and
dont realise by doing that,
they are making our living
that much harder.
It is in New Zealand Susan
receives the most attention.
I have a totally different life
in England. There are so many
people and other champions
there. I dont drive around
in a car with my name on it
[here she drives a bright red
Honda emblazoned with
her name] and you are not
really known at all. Every day in
New Zealand, I can guarantee
someone will ring wanting me
to do something.
The excitement of the last
year has been difficult. Susan has
spent only three weeks home
and seen little of her family.
It is a close-knit unit
consisting of Susan, six brothers,
and nine nieces and nephews.
They mean everything to Susan
and being away from them
is the big drawback in her
lifestyle, softened only by the
knowledge that they are all
immensely proud of her.
To get by while away, Susan
makes frequent calls home.
You ought to see my phone
bills I must spend $5000 to
$6000 a year on them.
As a child, Susan was
pampered by her brothers and
it is important that she spends
time with their children.
But as Ive got older and
been involved in squash, nieces
and nephews have started to

be born while I am away.
They dont know me.
I have two little blonde
nieces who are really shy
when I go near and that
upsets me. Others write to
me and say, Susan, I wish you
werent playing squash because
then we could see you. They
really dont like me being the
world champion.
This morning, when I left
Hamilton, my nephew said,
Susan, are you going to
England again? It was awful.
He is only three.
Susan was just 17 and fresh
out of school when she first
headed overseas, having
abandoned plans to do
University Bursary exams
and pursue a career in either
pharmacy or physiotherapy. It
was a quest to see how far she
could go in her chosen sport.
The first year I went to
England, I was miserable and
homesick. I hated it. I said when
I left, I would never be back.
Just getting into
tournaments was difficult. If you
werent known, you would only
make B division. You really
didnt have a chance.
Susan coped by throwing

herself into her squash.
I had this thing where I
would train, train, train, not
knowing when to stop partly
because I was lonely. It was
pretty miserable being the lone
Kiwi because over here, I always
had someone to turn to.
Despite her qualms, Susan
returned for a second year. Kiwi
Bryce Taylor became her coach.
It was probably one of the
breakthrough points because
he and his flatmate helped me
so much. They were true friends.
A rough three-year plan
was mapped out. Susan was
to aim to win the British Open
in 1985. But everything went
wrong because I won it last
year, she says.
Wrong? The thing that
affected me most was not the
pressure from the media or
anyone else, but the fact that I
had suddenly become number
one quite quickly. How on earth
was I going to stay up there?
It became important to
Susan to prove all the sceptics
wrong by winning the world
champs in 85. She worked
hard and got there.
I am undisputed, which is
what I wanted.

By winning that title, Susan
became one of the most
consistent womens champs.
She has not lost a tournament
for almost two years.
I did it for a lot of people:
my family, my brothers, Bryce
Taylor and John Oakley [her
boyfriend], she believes.
There were a lot of tears
when I did win.
A lot of people never
thought we would make it
even my own brother. He
thought I would maybe make
number two or three, not
because I wouldnt try hard
enough... He just didnt think
I had it in me.
Susan understands why
people were surprised by
her success.
My results have come from
hard work. Some players are
flamboyant but Im not really
like that. Im just a grafter, a
hard worker. Ill stay on court for
three hours if I have to win.
The person who made sure
Susan had the right balance
of training and relaxation in
those months was fellow New
Zealand squash player and
boyfriend John. He joined her
in England earlier this year.
When I started going
out with John, people
muttered that my squash
would probably go
backwards, says Susan.
Even my brother
wondered if it might be
distracting when John
said he wanted to go
to England. But his
presence has helped. It
has made my squash so
much more enjoyable.
John has almost taken
on the role of coach.
When he arrived, he
didnt know what was
involved in top level
training and has been
through two of my biggest
tournaments. He knows
how moody I get and its
good to know that when
I come off court, there is
someone to go home to.
I rely on him a lot to
make decisions. It is as
though I need or want
someone to take over.
I think its because I come from
a large family. Having John

John makes it his business
to organise her during
tournaments. He whisks her
away from the courts when her
match is over, psyches her up
for her next game. And while
Susan is playing, he watches
the form of her opponents,
analysing their game and
weak points. They agree the
relationship works well.
Susan says 1985 was probably
her toughest year of squash, yet
it was also her most enjoyable.
It was fun this year, whereas
before I havent enjoyed it so
much. The differences were
John and her growing reputation.
Once you get recognised
as number one, there are a few
more perks that go with playing.
Sport has become big
business and Susan is now at
the point of cashing in on all
her hard work, which brings
us back to the importance of
a wholesome public image.
Sponsors expect their
moneys worth out of their
personalities, but it has its
rewards. Most of Susans
sports gear is arranged through
sponsorship. There is the
Honda to buzz around in and
there are cash sums.
Susan admits she gets great
pleasure out of spending!
Not so long ago, she bought a
customised Fiat Uno and she
buys clothes that take her fancy.
My expenses are horrific.
We eat out five or six times
a week. You never find food in
our house. A lot of girls catch a
train to tournaments. I fly. They
will stay in bed and breakfast
accommodation. I stay in hotels
and I love buying for my family.
My parents havent got a lot
of money. I know that what they
get, they spend. They go away
for weekends to watch us kids
play squash. They live for the
pleasure of living. They havent
got millions in the bank but they
dont mind because they have
had so much pleasure. I reckon
thats the way Im going to live.
And if the money runs out,
she will just have to smile for
the sponsors again. #

I
t was a beautiful spring day
in 2012 and 12-year-old
McKenzie Kerr-Bell and her
mum Helen were meant to be
bottling pickled onions.
They had been out shopping
and during the drive home
Helen (51) had been her chatty
self, but McKenzie was quiet
and appeared tired.
I suggested she might
want a nap when we got
home, but she said she was
okay, recalls Helen.
But McKenzie wasnt okay.
Just moments after the pair
arrived home on that April
afternoon, the youngster
collapsed, spread-eagled
on the grass beside the car,
unresponsive except for her
eyes rolling around in her head.
What followed was
a nightmare that still haunts
the family. Driven by
ambulance from their
home in Pukekohe to
Middlemore Hospital,
McKenzie was admitted
to intensive care and
given a CT scan. She
was tested for diabetes
and epilepsy.
Helen and McKenzies
dad Mick (65) were told
by medical staff they could
rule out a stroke and a
brain tumour. We just
thought, thank God, Helen
says as she reflects on the
events of that day, which came
as Helen was recovering from
a double mastectomy.

transferred McKenzie to
Starship childrens hospital,
where she was placed in an
induced coma. She spent the
next four days undergoing
a battery of tests, including,
eventually, an MRI.
And then they started
unhooking everything, tells
Helen. The next thing we
know, were being taken into
a room with a social worker.
I said to Mick, This has to be
bad, it has to be. And then they
said, Were sorry to inform you
but shes had a stroke. It was
like, Youve got to be kidding.
McKenzie then in her
final year at intermediate
and Helen spent the next six
months living at the Wilson
Centre, a rehabilitation facility
in Takapuna.
Mick, a shift worker at NZ
Steel, and the couples younger
child Kade (then 10) spent
as much time as possible
with them, driving the 120km
round trip from their home
most weekends.
McKenzie was a sporty, fit
youngster who had just moved
up a squad at her swimming
club. At the Wilson Centre,
she had to learn how to eat,
how to use the toilet, how to
speak and how to walk again.
Despite years of physio and
gym work (which is ongoing)
and two operations, she has
been left with a permanent
disability along her right
side her hand, arm and leg
are all affected.
There was no chance for
her really because of the late
diagnosis, says Helen. It was a
big stroke. She is bitter about
the ordeal and says that when
she looks at her daughter, she
cries silently inside.
One neurologist told us not
to worry, it wasnt the end of the
world. If she cant eat or cant
talk, theres ways and means.
I thought, How dare you take
away our hope like that? We
had just been saying to each
other if all she could do is talk,
it would be the best thing ever.
I was so angry.
Its heartbreaking. Her whole
life changed. She was teased at
school she had to wear foot
and arm splints she became
heavily depressed, there was
[talk of] suicide.
Pukekohe High School
proved a turning point for
McKenzie. Now a student
leader, she passed NCEA Level
One last year and is planning
to study for a university degree
in clinical psychology.
She is also learning to drive.
Its a costly process theres
only one instructor in
Auckland with a
specially adapted
car and lessons are
for two hours rather
than one but
the family hopes
McKenzie may be
eligible for a grant so
they can buy and
convert a car for her.

event itself, and the reason for
McKenzie suffering the stroke

But while the feisty teen
concedes the past five years
have been tough, shes not
about to let it define her.
She hopes sharing her story
will raise awareness of the fact
that strokes dont just happen
to older people. Having to
re-learn everything has been
frustrating, she explains. It
was like being a baby again.

Normas own breast cancer
journey began with an initial
diagnosis in 2012 and a
subsequent mastectomy. When
the cancer reappeared in 2015,
she underwent more surgery,
including lymph node removal,
chemotherapy and radiation.
It was a tough time. Norma
had returned to study when her
daughter Beatrix (22) and son
Oscar (20) were still small and
she had spent the previous
15 years building up her own
landscape business.
After the mastectomy, I
thought that was it, as so many
people do. But two years later,
the cancer came back. The
treatment hadnt worked.
However, rather than feeling
sorry for herself, Norma
ploughed her energy into
making the most of her recovery
time. In order to rebuild her
upper-body strength, she joined
a local dragon boating squad
made up exclusively of breast
cancer survivors. She now has
her eye on paddling with a New
Zealand crew at the IBCPC
Dragon Boat Festival an event
for breast cancer survivors
worldwide in Italy next year.
Professionally, she became
one of only two Kiwis shortlisted
for the 2014 Canterbury
Earthquake Memorial design
competition, and is still an active
member of the Oakley Creek
restoration project, which has
seen Aucklands longest urban
stream and its surroundings
protected as a natural ecosystem.

International Flower Show
Gold-award winner, Norma puts
her success down to a love of
architecture. She travelled around
the world in her twenties, setting
up camp in London, Africa and
Saudi Arabia all places she
credits to inspiring her work.
She spent two years working
towards a landscape diploma
before completing a Bachelor
of Landscape Architecture.
And while shes the first to

undertake after her illness
involves an issue close to her
heart. She recalls, Id just
finished a round of chemo, lost
all my hair and was talking
about my concept with the
Garden Show], Kate Hillier.
And the show itself has had the
Breast Cancer Foundation as its
chosen charity in the past, so
it seemed like the perfect fit. #

was born with the eye
condition achromatopsia,
which means I struggle to
discern colour and depth, and
Im legally blind.
I grew up in the central
Hawkes Bay town of Waipawa,
where I was bullied at school
because I looked different.
The condition means I am
prone to squinting or shutting
my eyes, so this must have
looked strange to other kids.
The region had a huge
passion for sport, but because
of my vision, I was terrible at it. If
a kid threw a ball at me, it would
hit me in the face. Instead, I put
my focus into other interests.
I loved reading as a child, and
I often used to write creative
stories and plays. As a kid, I was
obsessed with palaeontology,
and I dragged my parents all
over the country to attend
dinosaur exhibitions and go
fossil-hunting. I also used to
have a passion for Egyptology.
My mum would take me to
Egyptology Society meetings
when I was 12 everyone else
was in their 60s!

Being obsessed
with old things, it was
no surprise I studied
archaeology at the
University of Auckland.
I loved my time at uni.
It was cool to study a subject
I had a passion for and meet
others who shared that passion.
It was liberating.
However, after leaving
university, I found it very hard
to find a job in archaeology.
They were afraid I would destroy
artefacts by not seeing them.
I was rejected time and again,
and this became a real low
point in my life.
My then-partner, now
husband James, suggested
I pursue my passion for writing.
I wrote stories in my spare time
and had often talked of being
a writer, so I took up a job
creating Braille books for The
Blind Foundation and worked
out how to start a writing career.
I did what any millennial
would do searched the
internet for How to make a
living as a writer. I realised there
were many ways to achieve this,

articles, blogs for businesses
and other content. I sent a
novel I had been working on
during university to publishers.
I took seven years to write
my first three novels, which
were part of a vampire series.
My first attempt was just
terrible and although each
book improved, I reckon I

for the series. Yet I never let
myself get disheartened.
I knew the rejections were
nothing to do with my eyesight
I was being rejected simply
on merit. I enjoyed being told
how to improve and re-write
the stories. I figured, even if Im
rejected 500 times, I might be
lucky the 501st time.
My first breakthrough came
in 2013 when I decided to
self-publish. Indie authors were
becoming increasingly popular
and were earning big money
Deciding to
self-publish was
a turning point
for author Steff.
publishing eBooks. The first
book I published a silly fantasy
comedy did appallingly badly,
selling about 100 copies.
Yet I learned from my
mistakes. I published a new
fantasy series, which people
bought in greater numbers.
The next stage of my journey
came at a party. I commented

first chapter of Fifty Shades of
Grey because I thought it was
badly written.
A friend of mine, who loved

SERVES 2
This great meal is tasty, healthy
and easy to throw together.
200g spaghetti
1 tbsp olive oil
4-6 bacon rashers, sliced
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
Zest and juice of 1 small
lemon, plus extra wedges,
to serve
cup macadamia nuts,
roughly chopped, toasted
3-4 kale leaves, central
stalk removed
2 handfuls other greens
spinach, silverbeet, sorrel etc
cup olive oil
tsp salt and a grind of
black pepper
1 Preheat oven to 180C.
2 Bring a large pot of well-
salted water to the boil and
cook the spaghetti.
3 For the topping, heat the
Lamb rumps with dukkah crumbs
oil in a large frying pan over SERVES 2 Dukkah (doo-kah)

1 Cook the basmati rice
in well-salted water. Once
cooked, lift the lid to let the
steam escape and to ensure
dry, loose grains. Mix in the
olive oil, citrus juice and salt.
2 Fry the onions in plenty of oil
until some are well-browned
and crispy. Add these to the
rice mix.
3 Ten minutes before serving,
toss the remaining ingredients
into the rice and mix gently.
Have a taste and if you think it
needs more flavour, add salt,
pepper and more citrus juice,
if you wish.

Almond crisps

Mum has this gorgeous
habit of digging through
her old hand-written recipe
books and, after finding
a recipe she likes, will
proceed to belt it out
repeatedly until we all cry
enough before moving
on! These crisps are her
latest find and weve yet
to ask her to stop because
they are amazing. They
keep crispy for ages, are the
perfect accompaniment to
a cuppa, or do as I have
been and crumble them
over soft vanilla ice cream
for an easy dessert.
125g butter
1 cup brown sugar, plus
1 tbsp extra
beaten egg
1 cup oats
cup almonds, chopped
(or use almond slivers)
1 Preheat oven to 180C.
Line 2 baking trays with
baking paper.
2 Melt the butter and
sugar gently, then add the
beaten egg, oats and
almonds. Mix well.
3 Place teaspoon amounts
onto a tray. It should take
about 10-12 crisps, evenly
spaced, as they do spread.
4 Bake for approximately
5-6 minutes, watching
carefully as they can burn
very quickly.
5 Remove from the oven
and place the next tray in.
As the first batch cools,
slip them off on to a wire
rack. Repeat with the
last 12.
6 Keep in an airtight
container. They will last
for at least a week.

2 tablespoons pine nuts
400g watermelon
200g radishes, ideally with leaves
4 sprigs fresh mint
50g feta cheese
1 Toast the pine nuts in a
dry, nonstick frying pan on
medium heat for 1 minute or
until lightly golden, tossing
regularly, then remove.
2 Cut off the watermelon
rind, pick out any seeds,
then slice as finely as you can.
SIZZLING SEARED SCALLOPS
SERVES 2
TOTAL: 18 minutes
400g potatoes
200g frozen peas
bunch fresh mint (15g)
6-8 raw king scallops, coral
attached, trimmed, from
sustainable sources
50g firm higher-welfare
black pudding
1 Wash the potatoes, chop
into 3cm chunks and cook in
a pan of boiling, salted water
for 12 minutes or until tender,
adding the peas for the last 3
minutes. Meanwhile, pick and
finely chop most of the mint
leaves and put aside. Place

Hi Helen,
I have found this wonderful
old recipe, which might help.
You can clean it by grating
some potato and putting it in
the decanter. Pour in equal
quantities of vinegar and
water, then shake. Leave
to stand for a few hours
before rinsing. Make sure
you dry it properly before
storing or it might go cloudy.
Use a blow-dryer held about
five centimetres away from
the neck to evaporate
all the water.

WHY YOU MIGHT WANT TO CULTIVATE A FEW SHADY CUSTOMERS

I
tend to associate ferns with
rainforests, which is probably
why Im thinking about
them during the wettest winter
and spring Ive ever known.
Fortunately, ferns are much
more tolerant of rain showers
every half an hour than I am,
so its unsurprising that ours are
looking the best they have in
years, relegation to the cat
garden notwithstanding.
Most, but not all, ferns are
shade lovers so its best to avoid
bright sun and windy spots.
Think of them as the botanical
equivalent of a yoga student
give them calm, soothing spaces
and keep them hydrated.
Ferns are generally shallow-
rooted so plant them in free-
draining soil enriched with
compost, and mulch around
the roots to keep them cool
and moist.
In summer if, and when it
arrives and during any other
dry periods (I wish!), water the
trunk and roots two or three
times a week. A decent, deep
watering is better than a quick
spray. Add a little feed with
a slow-release fertiliser once
a year and your ferns are
good to go.
Theyre usually quite pest
resistant but some ground ferns
can be colonised by aphids,
while some others can get thrip.
Snails like them in spring when
the new fronds appear.
If, despite your best efforts,
the fronds brown off suddenly,
it can be due to wind burn,
so you may have to provide
better shelter or move them
to a more protected spot. If they
go yellow, it can be due to too
much sun so, again, give them
some protection.
Were spoiled for choice with
fern varieties in New Zealand,
from tiny little models like the
popular maidenhair fern, which
grows to about 30cm tall, to
the black tree fern which can
top 12 metres.
Ive never been able to grow
a maidenhair fern, inside or out.
Even those Ive tossed into the
cat garden have languished.
But dont let that put you off.
Adiantum cunninghamii is
a really gorgeous plant that
will grow in sun or shade, in a
sheltered spot. Its even quite
hardy once it gets going.
I have had some success with
the good old hen and chicken
fern. Im not sure how they got
there but theyre thriving in the
inaccurately described native
garden at the bottom of our
lawn where its fairly damp
and shady. Its real name is
Asplenium bulbiferum (why

ts difficult to find the line
between fiction and reality
in this quirky whodunit.
Author Anthony Horowitz has
pulled a clever stunt and
inserted himself into the story.
So there are things included
that are definitely true for
instance, he describes a
meeting he once had with Kiwi
director Sir Peter Jackson and
producer Steven Spielberg to
discuss writing a Tin Tin film
script. But most of the other
characters, and the murder
mystery itself, are made up
presumably. I rather liked this
device but I can imagine others
might find it a bit irritating.
The story opens with a
wealthy woman called Diana
Cowper visiting an undertaker
to plan her own funeral.
Just six hours later, she is
murdered in her own home.
Is it a coincidence? Or are the
two events connected?
Anthony Horowitz (the
character, not the real author
confusing, huh?) finds himself
drawn into this case thanks
to an old contact called Daniel

four. And thats enough,
thanks. Im good with
that. Stop them there.
Parents of adult children will
be quick to tell you they grow
up so fast. And I agree. Sort of.
I want them to grow up just a
bit. Just enough to be able to
put the lids back on the felt tip
pens. How hard is it? The
colours match. How long before
you figure out thats why they
dry up and dont work? Lids,
for goodness sake!
Anyway, Ive got the message
and Im trying to enjoy every
moment, but I do get distracted
by trivia, such as my job and
sleep, so I miss things.
I realise it probably wouldnt
be good for their mental health
and its entirely selfish, but if
we could sort of freeze their
age where they are right now,
Id be happy.
Even then, I might be too
late. The My Little Pony may
have bolted, for already I feel
the snip of their independence
scissors on my apron strings.
It can be frustrating constantly
being nagged to help build
them a fort, but that annoyance
is miniscule compared to the
feeling I got recently when
they built a fort without me.
They didnt even bother to
ask. Just went ahead and made
it. I was cast aside. Not needed.
Surplus to requirements.
Adding insult to injury, I
wasnt even invited to the
roof shout. They didnt need
my approval or blessing. They
were, in a word, independent.
They were happy with their
fort too, despite a few glaring

structural flaws I spotted within
seconds of stumbling across it.
The second moment I
realised I was becoming a
redundant fixture was when I
came home to find my six-year-
old had moved a queen-size
mattress and base five metres
down the hallway and into her
room! On her own!
I already knew she was
strong two years ago
at her kindergarten
Olympics, she won the
weightlifting prize. But
I had no idea she had
practical furniture-
arranging power. If
someone can shift that
sort of object, they dont
need adult assistance.
In that afternoon, she
negated one of the few
remaining skills I could offer
her muscle.
On top of that was the
knowledge that if she could
move bedding around the
house, it wouldnt be long
before she would be moving
it out of the house. Shes six
and Im already fearing her
leaving home.
She still runs for a hug when
I pick her up from school, but
she no longer jumps into my
arms. Which might not be a
bad thing, given my ageing
frame and her mass times
velocity, but the signs of her
needing me less are there.

most amazing hut known to

y the time you read this, I
should be in the Hokianga
with my little London family.
I say should, but travelling across
the world with a six-month-old
baby will be a new challenge
for Kate and her husband, so
Ive kept an open mind about
loading up the car and heading
north the day after theyve
arrived. They might be shattered,
in which case we will go to plan
B the two adults will sleep while
I assume charge of the littlest
member of the party. All going
well, thats the plan, though.
Kate has been talking about
going to the Hokianga ever since
she told me they were coming
home for a friends wedding at
Labour Weekend. I guess its
about as far from the hustle and
bustle and smog and cheek-by-
jowl houses of London as you
can possibly be.
As you can imagine, Ive been
counting the seconds and Im
not the only one. Every time the
husband comes in from the back
yard, he says, Wont it be great
to see the wee fellow out on the
lawn? It seemed like an eternity
and now it is upon us.
The last time I saw Bart, he was
just five weeks old. I thought he
was the most adorable thing I
had ever seen but really, babies
just get more gorgeous with
every passing week, dont they?
Hes six months now, sitting
up and eating anything he can
get his chubby little mitts on,
and its been amazing watching
his progress. As Ive said before,
long-distance grandparents like
us are so lucky to have FaceTime
and Skype.
I have loved watching him

mum and dad. They talk to him,
play music to him, read to him
and you can almost see his brain
growing as he studies their faces
with such intensity, taking in their
every expression and responding

I came home buzzing, and

they were already doing it right.

me. Bart soaks up the attention

expressions and the cuddles, and
is positively blooming.
Hes a happy, sociable little
man except when hes teething.
But I think youre entitled to a bit
of a grizzle when your fangs are
cutting through your gums.
So far, my brother and
sister-in-law have met him, plus
his other grandmother, two of his
aunts and a number of friends,
and they have all given glowing
reports of the wee man.
Those family and friends who
have yet to meet him are queuing

swapped couture for camouflage
on her latest assignment.
Sophie (52) and Edward (53)
spent an afternoon in the jungle as
part of their tour of Brunei, where
they were attending celebrations
for the Sultans Golden Jubilee. And
the pair seemed delighted to get
their hands dirty as they learned
about jungle tracking from the
Royal Gurkha Rifles, a regiment
of the British Army stationed in
the country.
Despite the humidity, Sophie
looked particularly at ease in
the bush, where she sported a
traditional Gurkha knife, a kukri,
for a rather hot and sticky jungle
trek. But while her khaki outfit

marriage to fellow actor Mary Steenburgen
last week with a relaxing holiday in Hawaii.
The 69-year-old, who tended bar for more than
10 years on the hit show Cheers, met third wife Mary
(64) in 1993, the year the sitcom finished. The pair
locked eyes on the set of family flick Pontiac Moon.
Ted can still be seen on primetime TV thanks to
his role on hit SoHo show Curb Your Enthusiasm
and says hes still in good shape thanks to weekly
workout sessions. He joked, These are my
professional athlete years. Professional athletes are
always in rehab and playing hurt. Thats me at 70.
Also keeping him young, he says, is his loving
relationship with Mary. Earlier this year, he gushed,
