SHEAR FORCE AND BENDING MOMENT

The grinder roller can be modeled as cantilever beam, which is fixed at one end and loaded vertically at
the other end with the weight of the roller assembly.
The total weight of the roller assembly is determined from the previous section as, M = 145.5 Kg.
Thus, the vertical load (weight of roller assembly) is,
W = Mg
= 145.5 * 9.81
W = 1427 N
Using equilibrium equation, we have
= 0 = 0 (1)
= 0 W = 0
= W
= 1427 N.
And from moment equation, the maximum moment occurs at the free end where the load W is applied.
Thus,
= W * L
= 1427 * 346
= 49352 N-mm.

CRITICAL STRESS AND CRITICAL DEFLACTION OF THE BEAM

Again by Considering the Grinder Roller Assembly as the cantilever beam, the normal stress at any point
in the cross section of the beam is given by

=
(L X)..(2)

From the load diagram we can see that, the maximum normal stress occurs at the support, because of the
load W at the free end. Thus, at the support the horizontal distance x = o, substitute this value in the
general equation above gives the critical or maximum stress of the beam.

=
( L 0) where, z = section modulus.

=
or,

=
(3)

By assuming the cross section of the beam as rectangular section, we can calculate the section modulus of
the section as,
2
Z = 6

220 852
= 6

Z = 264917 3 .
Thus, substituting this value in equation (3) gives

=

49352
= 264917

= 0.18 .
2

Similarly, the general equation for the deflection of the beam is given by,
2
= 6
( 3L X ).( 4 )

From the load diagram we can see that the maximum deflection occurs at the free end of the beam, where
the load is applied. At the free end of the beam x = L substituting this value in general equation give the
critical or maximum deflection of the beam.
Thus,
2
= (3L L) where, I = moment of inertia of the cross-section of the beam.

= 3
. (5) E = the elastic modulus of the beam material.

The moment of inertia of rectangular cross section can be computed as,

3
= 12

220853
= 12

= 11258958 4 .
Since the material of the beam is, cast iron the elastic modulus of the material can be taken as,
E = 100 GPA.
Substituting this values in equation 5 gives the critical deflection of the beam as follow
1.427 8 3463
= 3 10011258958

= 0.017 mm. which is very small. It can be neglected.
