Physical topology: Way network is laid out physically

Topology Mesh Star Bus Ring

Characteristic Point-to-point link to every other Point-to-point link to a central Multipoint : All devices are linked Point-to-point link to two
device controller (hub) to one long cable (backbone) neighboring devices
Advantages - Dedicated link: - Less expensive than mesh - Ease of installation - Easy to install and reconfigure:
direct traffic between topology - Less cabling than mesh or star to add/delete device, only
devices - Robust: required to changed 2
robust: if one link is if one link fails, only that connections
unusable, the whole link is connected - Ease fault isolation: since signal
system is unaffected hub can be used to travels through all devices, if one
privacy/ security of data monitor link problems device does not receive a signal
easy fault identification/ alarm can be issued
isolation
Disadvantages - High amount of cables and I/O - Dependency on central hub: - Limit on number of taps a bus - Unidirectional (one-way) traffic:
ports if hub goes down, the can support and distance break in the ring can
(1) whole system is dead between taps: disabled entire network
- Duplex mode links:
2
- More cabling is needed than bus signal becomes weaker
and ring topology prevent signal reflection
at the taps
- Difficult reconnection and fault
installation
- To add new device, requires
backbone modification
