Sept. & Oct.

Project Projection Grade 8

Expectations for Phase 1 (Sept. 18th Oct. 20th)

Geography Global Settlement Patterns

Learning Goals:
Identify factors involved in human settlement (Site/Situation, Location, settlement
patterns)
Evaluate settlement patterns and their impact on the environment, and vice versa
Use the inquiry process to investigate issues related to the interrelationship between
humans and environment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIVIDUAL: Why is this City Located Where it is? Investigate a chosen city within Canada, evaluating its
location based on site, situation and the settlement patterns used there. This will involve some research
into the history of that settlement. This will be presented in a write-up using the Writing Process and
include a map. (G, L)

GROUP: Free Choice POL. Answer one of the following inquiry questions using the Learning Process. Your
findings will be presented in the form of any POL you choose. (G, L)
Where might most of the worlds population growth occur in the coming years?
How will cities need to change in order to accommodate growth?
How has population settlements changed over time?
How can cities/countries limit doubling time?
How might certain push factors be viewed as pull factors (and vice versa) for certain settlements?

GROUP City Road Map. Construct a city road map using your knowledge of settlement patterns to
incorporate the surrounding environment and include at least one body of water. Your map must include all
of the angles and angle relations discussed in Math class. (G, M)

ASSESSMENT At the end pf the phase there will be an assessment that summarizes all of the content
learned. (G)

Success Criteria: Developed in class for each assignment. This will be posted on our Google Classroom
site.

Health Personal Safety

Learning Goals:
Identifying dangers and safety procedures for hand held tools
Evaluate safety situations related to Science labs and identify proper lab procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASSESSMENT: Lab Safety and Tool Safety and Usage Procedures on the saw, miter box, jinx cutters, hand
drill, glue gun, goggles and general safety procedures.

GROUP Be Safe PSA: Chose an inquiry topic from below. You and your group will create a media POL,
which will educate others on the safety of that particular area of study. (H, L) Topics include: ATV/Off-Road
Safety, Concussions, Driving and Road Safety, Drowning Prevention, Fall Prevention, Holiday Safety, Home Safety, Pedestrian Safety,
Playground Safety, Poison Prevention, Rail Safety, Sports Safety

GROUP (IN CLASS): Cube Construction. With your group members, you will put your Tool Safety and
Usage Procedures to the test in order to construct a 3D cube out of balsa wood. Then write a paragraph
outlining all the steps you have taken. (H)

Success Criteria: Developed in class with the class. This will be posted on our Google
Classroom site.

Art Elements of Art

Learning Goal:
Use elements of design in art works to communicate messages for a specific audience and
purpose
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIVIDUAL: After learning the Elements of Art, choose an artist that you would like to profile. You will
then create a pamphlet that outlines their use of the Elements of Art by looking at their art style and
various art pieces. You must have your artist approved before beginning.

Success Criteria: Developed in class with the class.

Science Lab Safety & Hypothesis Writing / Fluids
Learning Goal:
Follow safety procedures for handling apparatus and materials during science labs
Use scientific inquiry/experimentation skills to investigate scientific questions
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASSESSMENT: Lab Safety and Tool Safety and Usage Procedures on the saw, miter box, jinx cutters, hand
drill, glue gun, goggles and general safety procedures.

GROUP/INDIVIDUAL: Paper Airplane Lab. You and your group will construct a hypothesis focusing around
the best type of paper to use when creating a paper airplane. Then test your hypothesis to determine if it
is correct. (S, L)

GROUP/INDIVIDUAL: Fluids in our World POL. Construct a POL that demonstrates the role
(negative/positive) of fluids in our world/lives. Create a BIG inquiry question to investigate and use the
Learning Process.

GROUP/INDIVIDUAL: Viscosity & Flow Rate Lab. You and your group will construct a lab that will test the
viscosity/flow rate of various fluids based on your hypothesis and understanding of the two concepts.

GROUP/INDIVIDUAL: Density Lab: You and your group will construct a lab that demonstrate the density of
fluids and answer, as well as prove the answer to the question: Can the density of a fluid change?

Success Criteria: Developed in class with the class. This will be posted on our Google
Classroom site.

Language Paragraph Writing & Public Speaking

Learning Goals:
Develop structure to writing various types of paragraphs (Procedural, Power Paragraphs)
Explore and apply various public speaking techniques
Identify main ideas within written texts and present them within writing
Use media forms to present ideas on various topics
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIVIDUAL Power Paragraph. Using the taught power paragraph model, create a paragraph on a topic
of your choice
INDIVIDUAL Lamb to the Slaughter. You will be making inferences and observations about a short story
by Roald Dhal.
INDIVIDUAL Journal Writing. Develop writing conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation)
INDIVIDUAL Fish Bowl Speech. Present a speech to the class on a topic pulled from the fish bowl with
only 24 hours to prepare

Success Criteria: Developed in class with class.

Drama
Learning Goal:
Engage actively in drama exploration and role play to communicate for specific purposes
and audience
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GROUP: Operations Skit. Using the script provided, you and your group will present a skit on the
order of operations in Math. (Dra, M)
Success Criteria: Developed in class with the class.
