LESSON PLANNING

LEARNING AREA: Mathematics: Data Representation & Interpretation

YEAR LEVEL: 3/4 TIME: 40 minutes

LESSON TOPIC: Introducing the investigation

LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students are informed as to what is expected of them
-Students are put into pairs
-Students are assigned the question that they will investigate

SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection

TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS

1. INTRODUCTION (whole class)

5 mins -Explain to students that were going to be doing an
investigation to showcase the learning that weve done so
far
-Introduce it by saying that were going to use our work on
data and graphing as an opportunity to discover things
about the members of room 29
-Explain that once weve completed our investigation we
can display the results and learn a lot of things about each
other, while practicing the maths skills weve learnt so far

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

15 mins and/or
GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)
-Explain to students what is expected of them in this
investigation
Planning their data collection
Collecting their data
Displaying their data
-Explain that they will be working in pairs and go through
who will be working with who
-Explain that we want to ensure that we find out as much
about the class as we can, so we want to make sure every
pair is investigating a different question

3. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
15 mins -As a class brainstorm the topics/questions that we want
answered
-Once we have enough topics, assign each pair a question
to investigate
-Get each group to record their names and the topic they
are investigating onto a piece of paper

4. CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect)

5 mins -Explain that tomorrow students will begin to plan their
investigations
LESSON PLANNING
LEARNING AREA: Mathematics: Data Representation & Interpretation

methods of data collection and recording (ACMSP068)

Select and trial methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording
sheets (ACMSP095)

LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students will be able to determine which data collecting method best suits their task
-Students will plan their data collecting method

2. INTRODUCTION (whole class)

5 mins -Explain to students that today they will be planning the
way in which they intend to collect their data

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

10 mins and/or
GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)
-As a class, briefly revise the data collecting methods we
looked at last week
Survey written question
Interview asking people face to face
Class vote hands up for your vote
Written poll ticking your vote
-Briefly mention things they may have to consider
whether they give people a number of options or whether
they can give any response they want, the number of
categories, an other option
(basically, you either have to sort your data first by pre-
determining the options youre going to give people, or sort
your data after, going through the results and determining
categories from there)
-Explain that students can use their previous plans to
guide them

5. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to complete their plans in their books

6. CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect)

5 mins -Get all students down in a circle in the floor and ask them
to share how they plan to collect their data
LESSON PLANNING

Collect data, organise into categories and create displays using lists, tables,
picture graphs and simple column graphs, with and without the use of digital
technologies (ACMSP069)

Construct suitable data displays, with and without the use of digital
technologies, from given or collected data. Include tables, column graphs and
picture graphs where one picture can represent many data values (ACMSP096)

collecting plan yesterday

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

10 mins and/or
GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)

data, but recording it
-Stress to them the importance of effectively recording
their data
-Briefly revise the methods for data recording
Tally
Table

7. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Send students off to complete their data collection and
quickly finish any data collecting plans if need by
-If students finish early ask them to start looking at their
data, sorting through it and predicting what they think their
graphs might look like based on the results
-If any groups need to do a class vote ask them to sort
their data first and complete the class votes before the
end of the lesson

4. INTRODUCTION (whole class)

5 mins -Explain that today students are going to be collecting
their data

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

10 mins and/or
GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)
-Inform students that they need to make sure their plans
from last lesson are completed before they move on to
collecting their data
-Inform students that they will be recording their data on
graph paper, not in their books
-Explain that before anyone starts collecting their data,
they need to have the table/tally they plan to use to record
their data approved by me. Make it clear that if anyone
starts collecting their data without getting their recording
method approved or in their books rather than on paper,
they will start again
-Explain to students the importance of categories when
collecting data, stressing the need to think about what
options they are going to offer people, or how they will sort
their data afterwards if the options are open ended
-Explain that if anybody collects and sorts all their data,
they may start constructing their graph, also on graph
paper

data yesterday, they can continue with that first
-Tell students that once they have collected their data they
may start creating their graphs

graph paper, not in their books
-Remind students of the importance of properly labelling
their graphs and being neat, i.e. using rulers

11. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to complete their graphs

the type of graph other than the one theyve completed
-If they finish that too, ask them to complete a picture
graph with a different key
12. CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect)

continuing work on our data investigations

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

10 mins and/or
GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)
-Explain to students that they need to complete or nearly
complete their graphs today

graph, one picture graph and an explanation of the results,
minimum, if they complete this they can then move on and
complete a picture graph with a different key, and a
comparison of their graphs
-Remind students of the things that are expected of their
work that were discussed yesterday, e.g. rulers, colour
and labels

students who have already finished theirs will be using
Excel to create a graph digitally

15. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)

8. INTRODUCTION (whole class)

5 mins -Explain to students that today theyre going to be finishing
their data investigations

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

10 mins and/or
GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)
-Explain to students that once they have finished their
graphs on paper they need to create a graph using a
laptop
-Explain that there will be experts that can help them do
this
-Explain that once all their graphs are done, or theyre
waiting for a laptop, they need to display their results, they
can do this by sticking their graphs, along with their
tables/tallies that they collected their results on onto card
-Remind them that their explanations about their results /
their comparisons are on the backs of their graphs so they
need to copy them onto paper before they glue their
graphs down
-Explain that at the end of the lesson theyre going to
share their results with the class
17. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to complete their work
