GOVERNMENT:
Australia is a constitutional monarchy. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, represented
by the Australian governor general. The government emanates from a Parliament elected
by universal suffrage.
The Parliament of the Federation is composed of the Senate and the House of
Representatives. The prime minister, now Malcolm Turnbull, is the leader of the majority
party in the House of Representatives, from which most of the other ministers are selected.
The Senate is composed of 76 members, with identical representation for all states, as in
the United States Senate. A state elects twelve senators, but one territory (such as the
Northern Territory or the Australian Capital Territory) can only elect two senators.
The House of Representatives, modeled on the House of Commons of Great Britain, is
made up of 150 members. The representation of states in this House is determined by its
population, but each constituency has only one representative.
