Pedagogical Teaching Philosophy

My pedagogical teaching philosophy is based on the idea that students are active
participants in their own learning. I strongly believe that students construct their own knowledge
and must be engaged in their learning if they are to make progress. True learning will not occur
simply as a result of me teaching at my students. In my classroom, students will have access to
multiple means of acquiring knowledge. Learning in my classroom will occur as a whole class,
in small groups, in partners, and as individuals. Students will have access to visual aids, hands-
on activities and manipulatives, and will participate in cooperative learning. Scaffolding will be
utilized to help students reach their fullest potential. Students must have the ability to lead their
own learning, to take risks, and to make mistakes in a safe environment. As a teacher, I will help
and guide my students to make progress and to enjoy their learning experiences.
Furthermore, assessment in my classroom will encompass all aspects of students
learning and progress. Assessment is not limited to tests, quizzes, and homework. In addition to
those traditional forms of assessment, I will also focus on class participation and demonstrated
effort. I believe that if the students in my classroom are working hard and to the best of their
abilities, success will follow. Not every student will grasp the same material with ease, but every
learner must know that the work that he or she is putting in is valuable and worthwhile. It is
important that all of my students know that our classrooms meaning of success is hard work and
progress characterized by both individual and group accomplishments.
A safe learning environment is another central component of my teaching philosophy. All
students are welcome in my classroom regardless of background, culture, or ability. Students in
my classroom will learn to embrace all differences represented in the classroom and will be
taught to appreciate themselves as they are. Different cultures, religions, ability levels, and
socioeconomic statuses will be celebrated through curriculum and classroom values. Every
student learns in a different way and comes to school with a different fund of knowledge. As an
educator, I acknowledge that every student deserves an equal opportunity to learn. It is my duty
to ensure that the needs of all of my students are met and that all students have the ability to
experience growth through learning.
