iLab Fall 2017 Syllabus

Introduction

iLab is designed to provide you with the skills and competencies needed to produce college-level
projects from freshman to senior. The skills you learn here will be applied to many of your courses both
in the UB Curriculum and your major. It is taught by a librarian, runs for 50 minutes once a week, and is
part of English 105 (Communication Literacy I). Thus, it is mandatory that you attend your weekly iLab
sessions. Your Librarians contact information is listed in the contact section of UBLearns.

You are required to access UBLearns, a website, prior to class and view a set of videos and complete
"prework". In class you will then apply what you've been introduced to in UBLearns. Each class will
finish with a graded Class Participation Assessment (CPA). These are used to help you work through the
research process.

The first portion of iLab allows you to learn and practice these skills in a focused environment. The
second portion of iLab is where you will be applying those skills to your ENG105 final assignments.

Contacting Your iLab Librarian

Since your librarian teaches more than one section of iLab please make sure to include your section
number in all correspondence when contacting your via email. An example of how your email subject
line should appear: ENG105(Section Number)(Your Name)

Class Behavior Policy

student is expected. Behavior guidelines are as follows:

Cell phones must be turned off. Laptops or tablets must be brought to class but stowed until needed for
class work. No eating during class. Leaving early is not permitted; prior permission is required from the
librarian if a student must leave class early (failure to do so will result in a 0 for that days Class
Participation Assessment (CPA).

iLab classroom behavior policies align with those in the Universities' Undergraduate Policies &
Procedures and are detailed here:
http://undergradcatalog.buffalo.edu/policies/course/obstruction.html
Medical, Bereavement, Religious Observance or Athletic Absence Policy

A student may be justifiably absence from class due to illness, bereavement, religious observance or
participation in university athletics. For an absence to be excused for such a reason, the student is
responsible for notifying the instructor in writing with as much notice as possible and provide the proper
documentation. Failure to contact the instructor in a timely manner and provide the necessary
documentation with result in an unexcused absence. For more details, refer to the Universities'
Undergraduate Policies & Procedures:

Assignments & Grading Policies

iLab.

Post Quiz (10%): A brief, mandatory assessment of your knowledge of information skills after taking
iLab.

8- PreWork Quizzes (10%): After viewing items in indicated weekly folders, you will be quizzed on your
knowledge of the content. Submit the day before your iLab class by 11:59pm in UBLearns.

7- Class Participation Assessments/Attendance (CPA) (10%): Assessments of how well youve mastered
the material and count as attendance for class that day. Submit by the end of class that day or 11:59pm
in UBLearns. Please refer to course schedule for details.

Individual Outline (20%): You will be crafting a research outline related to one of your final assignments
in ENG105.

You will be automatically assigned a team and topic for the Group Project. Your group will be assigned in
Week 4 with a broad topic and you are NOT allowed to change groups or topics.

Your group will narrow and focus on an aspect of your assigned topic and use it to create an
infographic. The infographic must be related to your topic. Your group must give more detail, expand,
and explore beyond the broad topic assigned. A summary of the topic is not acceptable.

During iLab classtime your group will have the opportunity to decide on the infographic topic and find
scholarly research that will support your topic. Therefore, you will have time to designate specific tasks
to each individual to assure the work is fairly distributed and each group member may highlight their
strengths. In Week 8 your group will have the entire class time devoted to creating the infographic. The
final group infographic will be uploaded into UBLearns and Digication by 11:59pm the night of your
iLab class.
