The experiment was done in three trials simultaneously. The leaves used for the experiment was
washed with water to remove the impurities. After washing it was wiped with a dry cloth or tissue to
remove the water. Then it was cut into tiny pieces with the use of scissors to avoid adsorption of
moisture from the hands. The leaves were placed in a 100 ml beaker until the 30 ml mark, and then
enough amount of alcohol was added just to cover the leaves. A watch glass was placed on top of the
beaker to cover the mixture. Then the beaker with cover was placed in a water trough filled with hot
water for 30 minutes. After the waiting time the beaker was removed from the water trough as well as
the watch glass. A strip of filter paper was placed on the beaker using stick and tape to support the
paper. It was placed with one end on the alcohol side and the other end on the outside of the beaker.
After 90 minutes the filter paper was removed and was air dried. The pigments on the sample were
identified and the distances travelled by the solvent and solute were measured.
