(IB) DIPLOMA

The IB Diploma is one of the most well regarded


and widely known secondary school qualifi-
cations in the world and is recognised by the
worlds leading universities.

Students study six subjects, three at higher


level and three at standard level.

Subjects are divided into groups and students


choose one subject from each group: First
Language, Second Language, Individuals
and Societies, Mathematics and Computer
Sciences, Experimental Sciences and Arts.

All UWC schools and colleges are influenced


by their local geography and culture. Each
year, with a variety of nationalities, cultures,
backgrounds and languages, the student body
adds a further influence.

Through living as well as studying together,


students learn about other cultures and the
importance of international and intercultural
understanding.

The UWC staff who also live on campus or in


the student residences play an important role in

CAS is an integral part of campus life as well


as one of the IB requirements. Students learn
skills in reflection, goal-oriented strategizing,
and stewardship.

With a range of indoor and outdoor activties,


students can participate in various clubs, groups
and events.

Students are given the responsibility and courage


to identify opportunities and take the lead in
community service projects, which are diverse
and appropriate to the local environment.

weeks in the months of July and August and
cover topics including youth leadership, sustain-
ability and intercultural understanding.

The volunteer groups are called national


committees and they operate in over 145
countries worldwide.

The UWC national committee system selects


more than 1000 students each year from within
their countries and territories to attend UWC
schools, colleges and programmes.

In order to achieve a true diversity of students


representing nations, cultures, races and
religions our national committee application
processes are tailored to ensure relevance to
local circumstances.

Schools for students across a wide age range,


providing students of all ages with the opportu-
nity to gain a UWC education.

Two-year pre-university colleges teaching the


IB Diploma to students typically aged between
16 and 19 years.

Although strong academic achievement is


valued highly, our ethos compels us to think
more broadly about the knowledge and skills
that will shape our students as whole people.

programme and over 60% of national committee
selected students accept either a full or partial
scholarship towards their UWC experience.

The college is integrated into the Italian/Slovene


village of Duino/Devin.

Trieste is within easy access and each year


the college organises visits to Venice, Padova,
Bologna, Mantova, Verona and Ravenna.

The college houses the Scuola Superiore Inter-


nazionale di Musica da Camera del Trio di
Trieste. Students with a very strong background
in classical music are invited to audition.

The surrounding area offers remarkable opportuni-


ties for cultural, linguistic and physical exploration.

UWC ATLANTIC COLLEGE
LOCATION: Vale of Glamorgan, Wales

Founded in 1962, it was the founding college


of the UWC movement. The college is located
in the 12th century St Donats Castle on the
dramatic South Wales coastline, overlooking
the Bristol Channel.

Atlantic Colleges co-curricular programme


includes four experiential faculties that allows
students to engage in discovery, to determine
their own pathways.

Weekly music concerts, national cultural evenings,


visiting speakers, and student debates on inter-
national issues enrich the experience and reflect
the diverse cultures represented at the college.

LOCATION: Santa Ana, Costa Rica

UWCCR Campus is located in a 12.35-acre


land surrounded by mountains and nature in the
valley of Santa Ana.

The college evolved out of the pre-existing SOS


International College Herman Gmeiner Costa
Rica. In recognition of the unique SOS heritage,
there is a significant population of students
with SOS backgrounds, and, in celebration of
the location approximately 40% of the students
come from Latin America.

An important aspect of the UWCCR identity is


a bi-lingual school. Virtually all students study
both Spanish and English.

UWC DILIJAN COLLEGE
LOCATION: Dilijan, Armenia

One of two new colleges opened in 2014, it is


based halfway between Yerevan and Tbilisi, the
capitals of Armenia and Georgia. Dilijan is an
important town both culturally and historically,
with a lush national park and pre-historic heritage.

The campus was built with sustainable materials


and is situated on an 88-hectare site, on the
verge of Dilijan National Park.

Students at the college can enjoy challenging


outdoor activities such as mountain hikes, rock
climbing and, water activities at the nearby lake
and, in the winter, ski at in a nearby resort.

LI PO CHUN UWC
LOCATION: New Territories, Hong Kong

The college is situated in Hong Kong, a city in


China that lies at the cross-roads of Asia in the
heart of one of the worlds most dynamic regions.

In daily life, the college emphasises the strong


Chinese traditions of proper conduct, practical
wisdom, appropriate social relationships and
respect for academic learning.

All first year students travel to Mainland China


for a week to perform service work, and other
projects enable students to engage in activities
beyond the classroom in various parts of east
and South-east Asia.

UWC MAASTRICHT
LOCATION: Maastricht, the Netherlands

UWC Maastricht was founded in 2009 as the


merger of two existing international schools and
opened the doors to a brand new, custom built
campus just outside of the city centre in 2013.

The site was planned with environmental impact,


energy use and value for the future in mind, and
the resulting campus is highly innovative.

The college has ambitious outreach plans and


serves as a centre for expertise for community
services (CECS) and a centre for short courses.

LOCATION: Paud, Pune, India

The college occupies 175 acres of land on the


shoulder of a hill overlooking the Mulla river
valley in the Western Ghats some 40 kilometers
to the west of the city of Pune.

The prize winning campus buildings combine


modern architecture with local materials and
give the feeling of life in a small hill village. The
college has dedicated much of its land to the
nation as a biodiversity reserve that was opened
by the Prime Minister of India in February 2008.

Interaction with the communities in the neigh-


bouring villages is a key part of the college
community service programme.

UWC IN MOSTAR
LOCATION: Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

UWC in Mostar students come from all ethnic


groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as
from the region and abroad.

Classes take place in the superbly equipped


modern science labs and classrooms including
a modern IT room and language department.
The college has a visual arts and theatre arts
studios, as well as a music room.

The community service programme aims to


contribute to the integration processes in
Mostar focusing on working with underprivileged
social groups such as Roma children, orphans,
refugees and the elderly.

LOCATION: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The campus is nestled in the forest on the


rugged shoreline of Canadas West Coast near
Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.

The floating marine sciences centre contains a


well-equipped seafront environmental systems
lab. Students conduct research above and
below water at nearby Race Rocks. A hilltop
observatory facilitates study about astronomy
and exploration of the night skies.

Students participate in programs to assist


people who are disabled, visit the elderly, and
work with disadvantaged people.

The campus boasts a spectacular dining area


overlooking the fjord, well-equipped science
laboratories, a music room, art and ceramics
studios, computer facilities, a media centre
which we are seeking to expand and a waterfront
recreation centre.

The traditions of both the Nordic countries and of


the Red Cross are reflected in the emphasis placed
on humanitarian and environmental concerns.

All non-Scandinavian speakers follow a Norwegian


language course.

The college is one of two new schools opened


in 2014. Based in Freiburg in the South-west of
the country, the college is located in an important
university and green city, but is also adjacent
to the beautiful and historic Black Forest.

Freiburg is an environmentally-aware city with


Green City status and, as a partner, helps the
College to further its sustainability goals.

The school places emphasis on environmen-


tal issues and in particular on how technology
can contribute to sustainability, ecological
development and peace.

UWCSEA Dover Campus educates students


from kindergarten to grade 12 (ages 4 to 18).

The college provides a challenging, holistic


education with an emphasis on academic
achievement, service to others, teamwork and
leadership. Students are encouraged to participate
in extracurricular activities which include sports,
music, drama and social service options.

The Global Concerns programme educates


students about global issues and through
it students are introduced to concepts of
leadership and organization and are encouraged
to establish their own initiatives.

UWC-USA was founded on the site of the historic


Montezuma Castle near Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Programmes emphasise community service,


wilderness experience and Southwest studies
through weekly service commitments and
multi-day projects and expeditions.

Students study intercultural communication and


mediation through the Constructive Engagement
of Conflict (CEC) and Global Issues programs.

Waterford Kamhlaba UWC is a pan-African


institution with a global outlook. 80% of the
students are from Africa.

As a developed world institution in a developing


country, the college offers many opportunities
for students to experience at first hand some of
the paradoxes, contrasts and opportunities of
the world they live in.

The schools community service programme is an


integral part of the student experience, with around
25 projects that reflect the colleges values.

LOCATION: Changshu, Suzhou, Jiangsu
Province, China

Changshu is located in the Yangtze Delta and


blessed by a mild climate. This 3,000-year-old
city has been recognized nationally for its rich
cultural heritage. It also boasts a mountain,
seven rivers and three lakes.

With a focus on Chinese language and culture,


UWC Changshu China aims to be the youth
leadership academy in Asia, providing a trans-
formational and empowering education that
develops future servant- and team-leaders:
Changemakers who can transcend cultures,
embrace challenges and contribute positively
to society on a personal, local and global level.
