Strategy Formulation and Implementation

Group Assignment
Your groups of X members each will be assigned by the lecturer. Please refer to the class list to
get connected with other members of your groups and kick start the project.

Report submission and presentation day: the last session of the course.

General requirements:

Each group will have to select a real business and complete the following requirements: do
research, conduct necessary analysis to come up with an appropriate long-term business or
multi-business strategy.

Suggested structure of the report

Company profile: brief history of the company, ownership, management, product,


market, main competitors, recent performance
Analysis and proposed strategies: utilizing the theories learned in class, conduct internal,
external analysis, develop strategic options and choose the most appropriate strategies
for the company.
Description of the companys current strategy: describe the direction the company is
following, and what the company is doing, how they are doing and comment
Suggestion: contrast what the group proposed and what the company is doing, and
provide some practical suggestions in terms of the strategic directions as well as the
implementation of the current and suggested strategies.

Bear in mind that:

The business must be existent (no imaginative business entity!)


You are encouraged to meet key people of the business to learn more about itself, its
competitors and the relevant environments.
Other methods of enquiring for primary (e.g. observations, customer interview) and
secondary data (e.g. reviewing internal documents) are also recommended so that the
groups obtain adequate materials for analysis and strategy formulation.
Playing the role of strategic consultants to the company, you have to present your
proposed strategies to the board of directors.
Quality of the solutions, report and presentation depends largely on relevant data
obtained and relevant data analyses

Submission requirements: one written report and a PPT presentation.

Format of the report: it should be of maximum 7,000 words excluding appendices, printed on A4
paper, and bound neatly. Inclusion of real-life data, screens, and documents to illustrate and
justify the points discussed is especially encouraged.
In terms of presentation, each group is allocated with 15 minutes of presentation with the
assistance of technology (PPT slideshow, audio/video clips). The group presentation is followed
by 5-10 minutes of Q&A. Questions and answers should be precise, and to the point. Going
beyond time allocated is booed, and in extreme cases will be penalized.

The groups may consult the lecturer for clarification of requirements and appropriate structure of
the report, and later on, the content of presentation (however, total satisfaction after consultation
is not guaranteed).
