The CD-ROM must be ISO 9660 compatible.

Connection for Video Output Terminals

Composite Video (CVBS) Output
The composite video output is supported by most televisions. The composite video jack on TV is usually
yellow and may be labeled video, CVBS, composite. Connect Front L and Front R to AUDIO INPUT (L/R)
on TV and set Analog Output to LR Stereo from the AUDIO SETUP menu.
SCART A/V Output (Optional)
The SCART terminal can be connected to the TV equipped with SCART connector.
The audio transmitted on the SCART is stereo sound.
S-Video Output
The S-Video output can be connected to the TV equipped with an S-Video input. The S-Video jack on TV
may be labeled S-Video, Y/C, S-VHS. The S-Video provides better picture than the composite video.
Component Video Output
The component video output can be connected to the TV equipped with component input.
The component video jacks on TV may be labeled YUV, Y/Pb/Pr, Y/Cb/Cr and may be green, blue, red. The
component video provides the best picture. Whenever the component video output is used, you must set
Video Output to Component from the VIDEO SETUP menu.

Turn off the power and unplug both units before setting up any connections.

This function is to disable the playing of
specified DVD discs that are unsuitable for
children. There are a total of 8 levels. If the
level is 8, the contents of the disc are suitable
for adult. If the level is 1, the contents of the
disc are suitable for children.
Used to adjust the level of parental lock.
Once selected, whenever you play a disc,
the selected parental level is compared to the
level on the disc. If the level you selected is
greater than the level of the disc, you may
play the loaded disc. If not, you may not play
the disc. To set appropriate parental level do
the following instructions.

Glossary
Analog audio
An electrical signal that directly represents sound.
Compare this to digital audio which can be an
electrical signal, but is an indirect representation of
sound. See also Digital audio.
Aspect ratio
The width of a TV screen relative to its height.
Conventional TVs are 4:3 (in other words, the
screen is almost square); widescreen models are
16:9.
Chapter (DVD-Video)
Just as a book is split up into several chapters, a
title on a DVD disc is usually divided into chapters.

Digital audio
An indirect representation of sound by numbers.
During recording, the sound is measured at
discrete intervals (44,100 times a second for CD
audio) by an analog-to digital converter, generating
a stream of numbers. On playback, a digital to
analog converter generates an analog signal
based on these numbers. See also Sampling
frequency and Analog audio.
Dolby Digital
The maximum 5.1 channels of audio used in the
surround system (Surround Digital) for movie
theaters is digital data compressed by the third
generation algorithm encoder.

DTS
DTS stands for Digital Theater System. DTS is a
surround system different from Dolby Digital that
has become a popular surround sound format for
movies. In order to enjoy the benefits of DTS
encoded discs, the digital output jack (either
coaxial or optical) of this player needs to be
connected to an AV amplifier or receiver or to a
DTS decoder to be able to enjoy the surround
sound of DTS audio. DTS audio is not output from
the analog audio outputs.
Dynamic range
The difference between the quietest and loudest
sounds possible in an audio signal (without
distorting or getting lost in noise). Dolby Digital and
DTS soundtracks are capable of a very wide
dynamic range, delivering dramatic cinema-like
effects.
Interlaced video
A method of displaying a picture in which odd-
numbered lines are updated in one pass, then
even-numbered lines updated in the next. See also
Progressive scan video.
MP3
MP3 (MPEG1 audio layer 3) is a compressed
audio file format. Files are recognized by their file
extension "mp3" or "MP3".
MPEG video
The video format used for Video CDs and DVDs.
Video CD uses the older MPEG-1 standard, while
DVD uses the newer and much better quality
MPEG-2 standard.
Optical digital output
A jack that outputs digital audio in the form of light
pulses. Connect components with optical digital
jacks using a special optical cord, available from
good audio dealers.

PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) Track

The most common system of encoding digital audio,
found on CDs and DAT. Excellent quality, but
requires a lot of data compared to formats such as
Dolby Digital. For compatibility with digital audio
recorders (CD, MD and DAT) and AV amplifiers with
digital inputs. See also Digital audio.
Audio CDs and Super Video CDs / Video CDs
discs all use tracks to divide up the content of a
disc. The DVD-Video equivalent is called a
chapter.

PBC (Playback Control)

(Super VCD/ Video CD only)
A system of navigating a Super VCD / Video CD
through onscreen menus recorded onto the disc.
Especially good for discs that you would normally
not watch from beginning to end all at once-
karaoke discs, for example.

Progressive scan video

Also called non-interlaced video, this method of
displaying a picture updates all the lines in one
pass, resulting in one pass, resulting in a more
stable, flicker-free image than interlaced video (for
a given scanning rate). See also interlaced video.

Regions (DVD only)

These associate discs and players with particular
areas of the world. This unit will only play discs that
have compatible region codes. You can find the
region code of your unit by looking on the rear
panel. Some discs are compatible with more than
one region (or all regions).

Sampling frequency
The rate at which sound is measured to be turned
into digital audio data. The higher the rate, the
better the sound quality, but the more digital
information is generated. Standard CD audio has a
sampling frequency of 44.1kHz, which means
44,100 samples (measurements) per second. See

Troubleshooting
Incorrect operation is often mistaken for trouble or malfunction. If you think that there is something wrong with
this component, check the points below. Sometimes the trouble may lie in another component. Inspect the
other components and electrical appliances being used. If the trouble cannot be rectified after checking the
items below, ask your nearest authorized service center or your dealer to carry out repair work.
Problem

Dirty or damaged disc
Align the disc properly.
If the region number on a DVD-Video disc does not match the number on the
player, the disc cannot be used.
Allow time for condensation to evaporate. Avoid using the player near an air-
conditioning unit.
Playback is not possible.
Reload the disc with the label side face up.
The operation is prohibited by the player and / or disc.
Press , then start playback again .
Switch the power off once using the front panel POWER button and then
switch on again using the front panel POWER button.
Some settings can be changed while a disc is playing, but are not effective
until the disc is stopped then restarted.
This is not a malfunction. Make the same setting when the player is stopped.
When the power is cut due to power failure or by unplugging the power cord,
settings will be canceled.
Before unplugging the power cord, press POWER button and checking that
STANDBY indicator light on the front panel.
Incorrect video connections. Check that connections are correct and that plugs
are inserted fully.
TV/monitor or AV amplifier settings are incorrect. Check the instruction manual
of the connected equipment.
The VIDEO-Progressive menu is set to ON but your TV/monitor is not
compatible with progressive scan.
Reconnect the player to your TV using a composite or S-Video cord and set
the TV to appropriate input.
The type of the disc is wrong, it's not a DVD+RW or DVD+R disc.
The disc is recorded fully.
The DVD+R has been finailized.
The TV DISPLAY setting in the Setup menu is incorrect. Set the TV DISPLAY
option to match the TV/monitor you're using.
This player is compatible with Macro-Vision System copy guard. Some discs
include a copy prevention signal, and when this type of disc is played back,
stripes etc., may appear on some sections of the picture depending on the TV.

Switch your amplifier to the player's analog outputs.

Clean the disc.
Interconnects are not fully inserted into the terminals (or are not connected).
Check that all interconnects are firmly inserted.
Dirty or oxidized plugs/terminals.
Clean the plugs/terminals.
Incorrect audio cable connection.
Check the audio connections.
Player's output is connected to the amplifier's phono (turntable) inputs.
Connect to any set of inputs except phono.
The disc is paused.
Press (play) to exit the pause mode.
Incorrect amplifier settings.
Check that the volume is turned up ,that the speakers are on, the input function
set correctly, etc.
Incorrect Audio menu settings.
Make sure that the Digital Audio Out setting is set to PCM or Bitstream.
Check that the PCM or Bitstream settings are suitable for your amplifier
-check the amp's instruction manual.
DVDs and CDs use different recording methods. This is not a malfunction.
If this unit is connected to a non-DTS compatible amplifier or decoder using a
digital audio cable, please connect to a DTS compatible amplifier or decoder.
If you do not do this, noise will be output if you try and play a DTS disc.
If this unit is connected to a DTS-compatible amplifier or decoder using a
digital audio cable, check the amplifier settings, and that the cable is properly
connected.
If the disc is a recordable CD, make sure that the disc is finalized.
Check that the track(s)are in the MPEG1 Audio Layer 3 format.
Check that the sampling rate of the track(s)are 32 or 44.1 or 48kHz.
If a track name does not end in ".mp3" or ".MP3", this player will not recognize
it as an MP3 track.

NOTE
Static electricity or other external influences may cause malfunctioning of this unit. In this case, unplug the power cord and then
plug back in. This will usually reset the unit for proper operation. If this does not correct the problem, please consult your
nearest service center.
