Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

19th Edition to 20th Edition Conversion Chart

This document is intended to help you transition from the use of the 19th edition of Modern
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning to the use of the 20th edition.

Whats New in the 20th Edition?

Image Library. A library of nearly all of the textbook illustrations has been added to the instructor
resources for this edition. You can use these illustrations to create customized presentations,
handouts, worksheets, study guides, and assessments.
New Chapter 1: Careers and Certification. This new chapter includes some information from
Chapter 54 of the 19th edition, plus new content on HVACR career opportunities and workplace
skills. This new chapter is intended to (1) help students envision the benefits of their coursework,
increasing motivation, and (2) emphasize the importance of general workplace skills, which are
critically important to the companies that will be hiring your students.
New Chapter 2: Safety. This general safety chapterwhich includes sections on hazard
assessment, personal protective equipment, and safe work practicescovers many of the topics
required in OSHA safety training.
Reorganization and expansion. Content was reorganized in several sections based on feedback
from instructors using the book:
o Previous Chapter 1: Fundamentals of Refrigeration has been separated into two chapters,
Chapter 4: Energy and Matter and Chapter 5: Gases. These smaller chunks will help make
this theoretical content less intimidating for students.
o Section 7: Refrigeration System Components includes new chapters: Chapter 19: Compressor
Safety Components, Chapter 21: Heat Exchangers, and Chapter 22: Refrigeration Flow
Components. In the previous edition, much of this content was spread throughout the book.
Consolidating the information in a single section has two benefits: (1) components are
presented within the contexts of other similar components, allowing the student to easily
compare and contrast similar components, and (2) components grouped in a single section
will serve as a more effective reference source for the student.
o Previous Chapter 26: Central Air-Conditioning Systems has been expanded into two
chapters, Chapter 32: Residential Central Air-Conditioning Systems and Chapter 33:
Commercial Air-Conditioning Systems. The content from previous Chapter 31: Air
Conditioning Installation, Troubleshooting, and Service has been distributed into appropriate
chapters (ductless, residential, commercial, etc.) in the section.
o The content from previous Chapter 38: Heating System Installation and Service has been
distributed into appropriate chapters (hydronic, gas-fired, oil-fired, etc.) in the section.
Technical updates throughout, including...
o Added information on microchannel heat exchangers, variable frequency drives, variable
refrigerant flow systems, and additional Code Alert features. New energy efficiency content
including air-side economizers, multistage and zoning thermostats, and variable refrigerant
flow (chapters 3133, 36), solar mechanical air-conditioning systems, ice storage air-
conditioning systems, procedures for troubleshooting energy management systems
(chapters 4445), and Thinking Green features.
o Over 400 new illustrations and photos spread throughout the book, highlighting current and
emerging technology.
