Learning Area: English Topic: Tragedy: Romeo & Juliet
Curriculum content description: Analyse and evaluate how people, cultures, places, events,
objects and concepts are represented in texts, including media texts, through language, structural
and/or visual choices (ACELY1749) Evaluate the social, moral and ethical positions represented in
texts (ACELT1812) Identify, explain and discuss how narrative viewpoint, structure, characterisation and
devices including analogy and satire shape different interpretations and responses to a text
(ACELT1642) Analyse and evaluate text structures and language features of literary texts and make
relevant thematic and intertextual connections with other texts (ACELT1774)
Students prior knowledge and experience:
- Students have completed a character profile of Romeo from Act 1 Scene 5
- Students have begun a jigsaw activity looking at the character development of Romeo in Act 2
Scene 2
Learning purpose:
- To assess the use of language techniques in the development of character.
- To write a short answer response analysing the scene to show engagement with the text and
understanding of the language features used.

- I believe jigsaw activities are a good way to cater for diversity as they allow for peer mentoring
while still allowing for teacher guidance
- Ensuring teacher assistance wherever necessary
Timing: Learning Experiences:

20 Students will get into new groups from the previous lesson to complete their jigsaw
activities

30-35 Students will use their completed character sheets, their copies of the play, and their
character profiles to complete a short answer response on the question they were given at
