LOOKING THROUGH: THE DIFFERENT PERCEPTIONS OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS

OF NARVACAN NATIONAL CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ON
THE MUSLIM SOCIETY

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Islam is the oldest recorded monotheistic religion in the Philippines. Islam

reached Philippines in the 14th century with the arrival of Muslim traders from the

Persian Gulf, Southern India, and their followers from several sultanate governments in

the Malay Archipelago. Islam was first brought over by arab traders in the late 13 th and

early 14th centuries, at least 200 years before the Spanish invasion. These Muslim

merchants originally came from present day Malaysia and Indonesia to the

southernmost points in the Philippines, namely the Sulu islands and Mindanao.

Muslims at this present time are one of the hottest issues of today particularly the

events that are happening on Mindanao. Muslims are infamous, seeing a Muslim could

trigger negative thoughts and stigmas. Because of this, Muslims are most likely to be

discriminated and the society creates an barrier with them. Thus, it creates divisiveness,

promotes war and different systems of beliefs.

This study seeks to answer the different social stigmas Grade 12 students of

Narvacan National Central High School Senior High School has on Muslims.

Furthermore, it will elaborate and will give more reasons on why does Grade 12

students think of them that way. This study also sets out to examine different ways on

how will the Grade 12 students interact if they will meet someone from the Muslim

society. Moreover, it will seek to address the different social stigmas of every individual

on Muslims.

In order to create a just and humane society, a nation must be united and it is

impossible if the nation is divided into many systems of beliefs and is clouded with

different social stigmas and negative perspective on each other. This study is set out to

find all this social stigmas and its reasons and finding a solution that will probably clear

this negative thoughts. This study will aid the people around the world as it gives a

deeper understanding on why Grade 12 students of NNCHS- SHS have these thoughts

about Muslims. It will also give the people around the subjects a knowledge that will

probably help them deal with the said problem.

Moreover, it will also help the government and different learning institutions to

understand and how to address the discriminations and social stigmas that the Muslim

society is experiencing at the moment.

Lipka (2017) concluded that Muslims are the fastest- growing religious groups

among the world. The growth and regional migration of Muslims, combined with the

ongoing impact of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) and other extremist

groups that commit acts of violence in the name of Islam, have brought Muslims and the

Islamic faith to the forefront of the political debate in many countries. Similarly, Pew
3

NARVACAN NATIONAL CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL (NNCHS)

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Research Center (2015) claims that the 24% of the worlds population are composed of

Muslims, and is the worlds second- largest religion after Christianity.

Additionally, the National Statistics Office (2000), reports that Islam population is

the largest minority religion constituting approximately 5 percent of the population in the

Philippines. However, National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (2012) asserts that

there are 10.7 million Muslims, which is approximately 11 percent of the total

population. Approximately 60 percent of Muslims reside in the Mindanao in the south

and nearby islands.

On the other hand, the United States Department of State (2014) emphasized

that on the Philippines there were reports of societal abuse or discrimination based on

religious affiliation, belief, or practice. Combined with the economic disparities, societal

and religious tensions contributed to persistent armed conflict in certain provinces in the

southern part of the country.

Hence, the researchers want to indicate that Muslims are also normal people and

they deserved to be treated normally and equally. The researchers want to create a

nation or an environment that is free from discrimination and racism not only for the

Muslims but for all individuals. This study wants to give every individual a deeper

understanding about who are Muslims. By doing so, the researchers seek to collect the

different stigmas of Muslims, their reasons and their solutions from the subjects.
