THE SCHOOLS LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER

My Learning Episode Overview

Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine a Learning Resource
Center or Multi Media Center and learn about its collection, services, equipment and
reflect on how it supports the teaching learning process.

My Intended Learning Outcomes

In this Episode, I must be able to:
Describe the goals of a Learning Resource/Multi-Media Center.
Identify and classify resources that facilitate the teaching-learning process.
Explain the services of the center that support learning.

My Performance Criteria
In will be rated along the following:
Quality of my observations and documentation,
Completeness and depth of analysis,
Depth and clarity of classroom observation-based reflection,
Completeness, organization, clarity of portfolio and
Time of submission of portfolio.

My Learning Essential
1. A school usually sets up a center which will provide valuable support to the
teaching-learning process. Over the years the name of this center has evolved.
Some of the names are Audio-Visual Center, Media and Technology Resource
Center, Teaching-Learning Technology Department, or Simply Learning Resource
center.

2. With the very fast development of information and communications technology

(ICT), the natural outcome was the ever-expanding interface between the
traditional library and the ICT both in terms of hardware and software systems and
applications.

3. Schools may have different set-ups when it comes to Learning Resource Center
(LRC). Some have replaced the term library with LRC. Some have a separate
library, LRC and Audio Visual or Media Center. Some just have the LRC both for
teachers and students.

4. The common purpose among these centers is to provide print, audio-visual and
ICT resources to support the teaching-learning process.

5. The goals of the Center may include, orientating and training teachers in the use
of audio visual and ICT resources, working with teachers and administrators in
producing instructional materials, making available useful resources to the
students, teachers and the school community.

6. In order to support the philosophy and aims of the school, the Center must fulfill
the following functions:

Center of resources
Laboratory of learning
Agent of teaching
Service agency
Coordinating agency
Recreational reading center
A link to other community resources

Where the learning resources/materials arranged properly according to their

functions and characteristic?
Yes, the learning materials were arranged properly according to their functions and
characteristics. The teachers makes sure that they are grouped according to their
functions and accessibility for learners. The books were arranged according to their time
of classes to be use, the information corner are also updated and the magazines and
newspapers were also arranged in timeline, the ICTs and other devices were also placed
in their proper places to avoid any accidents and unwanted instances. Thus, it is
convenient for learners to use these materials whenever they want/need to use them.

Do the guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials by the
teachers? Why? Why not?
The guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials by the
teachers. As what I had mentioned on the first question, they were arranged according to
their allotted time to be use. Also, the guidelines and procedures to be followed are being
oriented to the learners on their first day of class. Thus, learners and teachers can access
the materials easily whenever they wanted to borrow the equipment.

What are the strengths of this Learning Resource Center?

The strengths of these Learning Resource Center is it provides opportunity for the
leaners to widen their knowledge in a multiple aspects, leaners tend to develop and learn
according to their aptitudes and learning styles. Also, for the teachers, it helps them to
deliver their lessons effectively and engaging the class to participate well especially
during the class discussions. Thus, this Learning Resource Center helps both the leaners
and the teachers in their everyday life inside the school premises.

What are its weaknesses?

The weaknesses of the Learning Resource Center inside the classroom that I had
cited are there were only few learning resources such as books and magazines. Also,
some students are not aware on how to handle technologies such as projectors and
laptops for most of them are just new to this kind of equipment and not all teachers are
able to use the projector, its just, 1 teacher at a time for there were only 1 projector.

What suggestions can you make?

I suggest that the school officials must provide more accessible learning resources
such as books and magazines for everyone. The school must also provide adequate
number of projectors for learning to make effective and efficient, also, the teachers must
exert extra effort to make their students be familiar with new technologies such as laptops
and LCDs.
My Reflections/Insights

1. Which of the materials in the Learning Resource Center caught your interest the
most? Why?
From the materials in the Learning Resource Center, the one that caught
my interest the most is the laptop and projector for we all know that laptops are
one of the most useful and efficient gadgets to be use nowadays especially when
teaching in our current curriculum; K to 12. It is very engaging and at the same
time the students learned while enjoying what theyre doing. Also the projector
plays its role by projecting the visuals on the screen of the laptop making the
images clearer to see in the front and back row of the class.

2. Which gadgets/materials are you already confident to use/operate?

I am confident in using almost all gadgets used in the school. I must say
that I am computer literate, I am very good in operating with laptops, making
graphic visuals, editing video, making documentations, editing photos and
magazines. Thus, when it comes to learning material in school, I should say that I
am well develop in every aspect such as the laptops, projectors, LCDs, operating
sounds, and projecting motion pictures.

3. Which ones do you feel you need to learn more about?

Though I am well developed in all aspects of manipulating the learning

resources I can find in school, I still want to become more literate in computer, like
computer programming, making software to make my teaching more engaging in
the near future and making my life as a teacher easy and enjoyable so as the life
of my leaner, I want to make sure that through the use of the software I might
invent, they will learn willingly and at the same time, enjoying while learning.
My Learning Portfolio
Paste an article about an example of technology gadget/material that you want to learn
more about. How can this gad/get be useful in instruction/learning?

The public education system no longer considers the integration of technology as

a debatable issue in the classroom. In fact, many schools have started to incorporate the
technological use of computers and mobile devices in the classroom to further the
academic performance of students. Computer technology in the classroom has evolved
beyond drill and practice programs. Today's technology can provide teachers and other
school faculty with greater opportunities to bring information to their students. This allows
educators to prepare students for the future, both in their personal and professional lives.
Computers have changed the way society functions. Future generations will need
to compete with the growing trends of a technologically-driven society that relies on
computers to perform daily tasks. The classroom is a good starting point for people to
learn how to use these complex machines. If students learn word processing skills and
how to navigate computers and the Internet early on, they will be prepared later in life to
utilize computers for more complex assignments. Computers grant access to the Internet,
which hosts academic research and offers educational support. Historical records and
social organizations are only a click away, providing a wealth of information for studying
history and social studies. Students and teachers are now able to communicate with
educators and other students anywhere in the world easily and instantly. This new
phenomenon opens up opportunities for collaboration that did not previously exist. There
are also many resources and communities online that are available to help students
develop and improve mathematical and scientific understanding. Even though computers
are extremely beneficial to the educational process there are some negative aspects that
present themselves. Students have access to greater distractions during research or
study time, in the forms of games and social networking websites. There is also the risk
of students interacting with potentially dangerous, anonymous individuals. Therefore, it
becomes vitally important for teachers and school faculty to monitor computer use to
ensure they are being used safely and for the right purposes.
Teachers may encounter students who have already acquired computer skills. In
fact, some students may have developed computer proficiency beyond their teachers.
This can make it easier for the teacher to incorporate computers into the school
curriculum. The majority of public and private schools have already begun the transition
to using computers in the classroom. Computers offer teachers the unique ability to
collaborate with other educators and professionals opening up worlds of understanding
to them and their students. There are many networking sites available to instructors that
offer teaching plans and project ideas. Sites like Youtube.com can also prove to be useful
when demonstrations or examples are needed to further explain concepts being taught.
As new technology is developed teachers will have more tools available to them.
Electronic books and tablets may remove the need for physical textbooks, costing schools
or parents more money initially when the device is acquired, but less through the years
when licenses can be purchased for each class. Some technology utilized by students in
the past were voice recorders and iPods. Today, most cellphones come equipped with
voice recording capabilities and many phones can download and playback podcasts,
which makes lectures available for review at a later date. Although most instructors frown
upon the use of cellphones in the classroom, there are some benefits to them being used
responsibly.
Teachers can incorporate several software applications to help students learn
more about the course material. Word processors, drill and practice programs,
spreadsheet, database programs, and presentation software enable teachers to create
fun and interactive ways to help students learn the course material while also reinforcing
computer skills. For instance, teachers can direct students to WebQuests.org to reinforce
Internet browsing skills. In addition, it also helps students incorporate research skills to
answer homework questions and compose essays. Teachers may also challenge
students to create blogs, glogs, and podcasts about their coursework for extra credit.
Wikis can also help students learn more detailed information about the main points
presented in the daily lesson plan.
Laptops and personal computers will be very useful in the field of teaching
especially for us future teachers in the world of K to 12 Curriculum where electronic
portfolios, electronic class records, agendas, teachers and learners materials are being
sent via internet by the DepEd. Also, these personal computers will lessen the work of
the teachers with the videos and presentation the she may aid in her discussion and
session with the class and at the same time, laptop and computers are the major trends
in education nowadays, thus, going with the trend will make the education and learning
more enjoyable.
