Tiered Lesson

Subject Area: Math Grade level: 6 Rachel McKelvey

Concept: Number Sense: Understanding the value of positive and negative integers

Skills:
1. Use positive (+) and (-) tiles to model subtraction of positive and negative
integers.
2. Use real world examples to understand and apply relationships between positive and
negative integers.
3. Illustrate adding and subtracting positive and negative integers with boxes
drawn by the student.

Tiered By: Readiness

COS Objective/Standard:
1. Positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values
(e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative
electric charge). CCRS M. 6. 8
2. Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers.
CCRS M. 7. 4
Lesson overview:
The lesson begins with all students taking a pre-assessment quiz using the Socrative app on individual
i pads. Next the teacher will instruct the whole group using real world examples. After group discussion, the
students will choose which level activity to complete independently. There are 4 levels including a challenge
level. After checking the activity, the teacher will demonstrate adding and subtracting negative and positive
numbers with manipulatives. Then the students will practice adding and subtracting with their own set of
manipulatives. If the students quickly master using the manipulatives move to drawing boxes to represent
manipulatives to work out the problems. Students are now given an independent activity and the choice to use
manipulatives, draw boxes, or use rules to compete the problems. Finally students take a post assessment quiz
using the Socrative app.
