Prep Students for Field Experience

Brief Review: Concepts covered in grade 10 - the impact of colonial contact between
indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada.

Non-Nationalist Loyalty: Sometimes non-nationalist loyalties exist within a nation. They

are based on a strong identification with a class, religion, region, ideology, culture, race,
or ethnicity.

New Information / Preparing for Field Experience:

The Kainai Nation, or Blood Tribe, occupy a large section of land in Southern Alberta. It
is the largest reserve in Canada. They entered into Treaty 7 with the Stoney Nakoda,
Tsuu Tina and Canada in 1877. The Kainai speak a language from the Algonquian
linguistic group and are part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which includes the Peigan
(Piikani), Siksika (Blackfeet) and the South Peigan (in Montana). Their Head Chief is Roy
Fox (Makiinima).

They have a vision to farm all 250,000 acres of reserve land. Past Chief, Charles Weasel
Head, stated in 2015 Agriculture is our biggest economy on the Blood reserve, so we
need our young to move in that direction to strengthen our future(Tsinikssini).

Activity: In groups, research current events of the Kainai Nation through recent copies of
Tsinikssini Magazine. Orally share findings with class.
