5.4.7 State how the following special purpose bolts are identified and where each may be used:

a. Internal wrenching bolts

Internal wrenching bolts are identified by there internal hex drive in the head of the fastener. These bolts, (MS-20004 through
MS-20024 or NAS-495) are fabricated from high-strength steel and are suitable for use in both tension and shear applications.
The head of the internal wrenching bolt is recessed to allow the insertion of an internal wrench when installing or removing the
bolt.

b. Clevis bolts

The head of a clevis bolt is round and is either slotted to receive a common screwdriver or recessed to receive a cross point
screwdriver. This type of bolt is used only where shear loads occur and never in tension. It is often inserted as a mechanical pin
in a control system.

c. Drilled head bolts

Drilled head bolts are identified with an H in the part number. For example: AN6H34A is a 3/8 inch diameter bolt, drilled head,
3.5 inches long and has an undrilled shank. These types of bolts are used when safetying of the bolt is important such as securing
engine mounts, propellers into flange shafts, flight controls, etc.

d. Undrilled shank
Undrilled shank bolts are identified by the letter A in there part number. When hardware was first standardised almost all nuts
were locked to a bolt using a cotter pin and therefore all bolts had a hole drilled near the end of the shank. But with self locking
nuts becoming more popular many AN bolts were made without a drilled hole. To help identify whether or not a bolt has a hole
drilled in it the letter A is used in the part code immediately after the dash number. For example: AN6C-12A bolt is a 3/8 inch
diameter, 1 inch length and has an undrilled shank.

e. Drilled shank
Drilled shank bolts are identified by the absence of the letter A following the dash number of the bolt.

f. Eye bolt

Eye bolts are a type of special purpose bolt. It is used where external tension loads are to be applied. The eye bolt is designed for
the attachment of such devices as the fork of a turnbuckle, a clevis, or a cable shackle. The threaded end may or may not be
drilled for safetying.

5.4.8 Describe the types of stud and dowel used on aircraft or aircraft components and how stud and dowel threads may vary when
inserted into different metals.
A ange propeller has six studs configured in a four inch circle. Two special studs that also function as dowel pins are provided to
transfer torque and index the propeller with respect to the engine crankshaft. The dowel pin locations used on a particular
propeller installation are indicated in the propeller model stamped on the hub. Perform the applicable steps under spinner pre-
installation and clean the engine ange and propeller ange with quick dry stoddard solvent or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).
Install the O-ring in the O-ring groove in the hub bore. NOTE: When the propeller is received from the factory, the O-ring has
