0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 15 January 1975, after the draft finalized by
the Wrought Steel Products Sectional Committee had been approved by
the Structural and Metals Division Council.
0.2 This standard was first published in 1967. While reviewing this
standard it was decided to incorporate two more grades of steel, 055
and e60, for spring washers, in this revision.
0.3 Steel spring washers are widely used in railway rolling stock, auto-
mobile and other engineering applications where locking action is
required against rotation of the screwed or bolted assembly.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of
this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor-
dance with IS : 21960*. The number of significant places retained in
the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value
in this standard.

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard covers the requirements for steel in the form of plate.
sheet, wire or rod intended to be used in the manufacture of spring
washers.
2. GRADES
2.1 Steel for spring washers shall be of six grades as specified in Table 1.

3. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL
3.1 General requirements relating to the supply of material shall con-
form to IS : 1387-1967t.

4. MANUPACTURE
4.1 Steel shall be made by open-hearth, electric or a combination of
these processes. In case any other process is employed by the manu-
facturer; prior approval of the purchaser shall be obtained.
4.1.1 A sufficient discard shall be made from each ingot to ensure
freedom from injurious piping, undue segregation and other harmful
defects.
5. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
5.1 The ladle analysis of steel, when analyzed in accordance with
IS : 228-1959, shall be as given in Table I-

6. FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS

6.1 The material shall have reasonably smooth surface, fre~ from harm'
ful defects.
6.2 Decarburization shall be kept at a minimum. A limit of decarburi-
zation may be fixed by agreement between the purchaser and th~
supplier,
7. ROLLING TOLERANCES
7.1 The material shall be supplied to the dimensions specified hy the
purchaser a~d shall be rolled to the following limits:

8. CALCULATION or WEIGHT
8.1 The weight of 'Steel shall be calculated on the basis that steel
weighs 785 g/cml .

9. DELIVERY
9.1 The material shall be supplied in anyone of the following conditions
subject to mutual agreement between the purchaser and the manu-
facturer:
a) As-rolled.
b) As-rolled and annealed, and
c) Hardened and tempered.
10. RUST PREVENTION
10.1 The surface of the material may be coated with a thin layer of
anti-rust oil or anti-rust compound when agreed to between the purchaser
and the supplier.
11. RETEST
11.1 Should a test piece first selected fail to pass any of the tests specified
in this standard, two further samples shall be selected for testing in
respect of each failure. Should the test pieces from both these additional
sample pass, the material represented by the test samples shall be deemed
to comply with the requirements of that particular test. Should the test
piece from either of these additional samples fail, the material represen-
ted by the test samples shall be deemed not to comply with this standard.
12. MARKING AND PACKING
12.1 The material shall be suitably identified with the name or trade-
mark of the manufacturer, grade and cast number or by such identi-
fication marks by which the steel can be traced to the cast from which it
has been made.
12.1.1 The material shall be packed and delivered as agreed to
between the purchaser and the supplier.
12.2 DIS CertUkaUoD Marking
The product may also be marked with Standard Mart.
12.2.1 The use of tbe Standard Mark is governed by tbe provisions of the
Buteau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and die Rules and RegaladollS made
tbereunder. The delaU. of coDdiooDl under which the liceace for the use of
Standard Mark my be granted to mlnufacture.. or prodUCCII may be o~ned
