Assignment 3
Issued October 4, 2005; Due October 11, 2005 (in class)
1. Use the definition of the convolution integral to derive the following properties:
(a) Shifting: x(t) (t t0 ) = x(t t0 )
(b) Area: Let y(t) = x(t) h(t). Let Mx , My and Mh denote the areas under the
curves x(t), y(t) and h(t) respectively. Show that My = Mx Mh .
2. (Interconnection of Systems) Consider the interconnection of four LTI systems as de-
picted in Fig. 5.

x[n] h2[n]
h4[n]
(a) Find the impulse response h[n] of the overall system in terms of h1 [n], h2 [n], h3 [n]
and h4 [n].
(b) Assume that h1 [n] = u[n], h2 [n] = u[n + 2] u[n], h3 [n] = [n 2] and h4 [n] =
n u[n]. Find h[n].
3. (Convolution Integral ) Consider a continuous-time LTI system with impulse response
h(t) = et u(t) and input x(t) as shown below.

Determine and sketch y(t) = x(t) h(t) for the following values of T :
(a) T = 4 (b) T = 2 (c) T = 3/2 (d) T = 1.
Hint: The shifting property in Question 1 is useful.
