Principiile Sustenabilitatii
PRINCIPIILE GENERALE
PRIMUL principiu al ordinii cadrului public stabilete natura obligatorie a unui sistem de control
care sa vizeze binele general, atat pentru generaia prezenta cat si pentru cea viitoare: dezvoltarea
sustenabila trebuie sa fie o responsabilitate a statului.
Principiul AL SAPTELEA solicita dezvoltarea controlata a ecosistemelor fragile.
Principiul al OPTULEA, cel al planificrii spatiilor, solicit o urbanistica general echilibrata ntre
sistemele create de om i ecosistemele naturale, pentru a controla i a menine stabilitatea lor i
dezvoltarea calitativ i satisfacerea nevoilor estetice ale omului.
Principiul al DOISPREZECELEA stabilete un sistem de sunet de valori al mediului si a unui grad
de constientizare in oameni,ca o garanie real pentru intregul sistemul de control.
Theres a little-known competition that promises to change the way our cities function.
The Intel-sponsored Cognicity Challenge was set up by the Canary Wharf Group to identify and
accelerate the development of smart city technologies. Its six categories cover everything from
sustainable buildings and integrated transportation to connected homes and virtual design. The first
finalists have just been announced.
In the Integrated Transport category, six startups competed for two spots and a chance to develop
their technology and ultimately see it deployed in Canary Wharf.
Alchera Technologies pitched its satnav-trouncing tracking technology, which uses cameras and
machine learning algorithms to provide real-time travel information. By analysing road traffic or
passenger flow, a smart city linked to an Alchera brain would be able to tackle jams, queues and
overcrowding, the curse of most modern metropolises.
These fully electric MellowCabs can be hailed using a smartphone app and refuelled by sunshine.
They have solar panels on their roofs.
Voyage Control, meanwhile, has developed a system that you might not ever notice. Its an
invisible platform that matches customers with empty trucks to utilise spare capacity. Reducing
the number of unused trucks on a citys roads not only helps to reduce congestion and ease air
pollution, but could save freight operators precious time and money.
Smart cities are connected, digital cities and BuzzStreets is an app designed to embrace that. It
exists to identify travel problems in real-time, showing you images of those problems (so you can
assess the severity), and offering you smart routing options around them. The app is already
available for Android and iOS, albeit rough around the edges.
There are 51 Pavegen tiles installed at Heathrow Airport, which harvest kinetic energy to power the
LED lights above them.
This trio of clever ideas were battling against three more KnowNow (a smart city information
service recommending urban places to eat, sleep, play and go); PIE Mapping (cyclist-friendly
smart routing for heavy vehicles); and MellowCabs (three-wheeled, solar-powered, electric taxis for
commuters who want to save the planet).
In the Sustainable Buildings category, another six startups competed against each other. They
included 8point3 LEDs energy-saving, cloud-connected lighting (delivering 85% more energy
savings than comparable fluorescent and halogen systems), and Jooxter, which uses motion sensors
to track the movement of people inside buildings, enabling managers to analyse footfall, give
people directions and optimise room usage.
Jooxters in-building motion tracking tech can guide people to free workspaces or empty meeting
rooms.
They faced Pavegen and its kinetic energy-harvesting floor tiles. The technology has already been
installed in Heathrow Airport, West Ham underground station and several schools. Its most recent
project is a people-powered football pitch in Rio de Janeiro. A combination of 200 Pavegen tiles
and solar panels can reportedly power the floodlights for up to 10 hours.
Imagine the energy that could potentially be generated by thousands of commuters walking across
Pavegen tiles in the heart of Canary Wharf.
If that doesnt fire your imagination, then perhaps Polysolar will. The company has developed
Photovoltaic Solar Glass, which can installed into new construction projects or retrofitted into
existing buildings to generate solar power. Think vast solar facades and huge solar canopies, smart
solar greenhouses and, in the future, transparent solar windows.
Polysolars PV glass can be used in a variety of ways, including building facades and greenhouses.
If Elon Musk wants to convert the world to run on sunshine, this will be the way to deploy PV
technology en masse.
The Solar Cloth Company takes a different approach to renewable energy. Its lightweight, low-cost,
flexible solar panels are designed for non-load bearing roofs, opening up solar power generation to
buildings that cant support the weight of traditional PV systems.
Finally, Quantum Waste has a plan to change recycling forever, offering customers access to a
one-stop, non-stop, zero carbon waste processing operations that minimise transportation time and
costs, enable more flexible and efficient refuse collections, drive down the carbon footprint and up
recyclability rates.
The Solar Cloth Companys thin-film PV panels are perfect for smaller roof structures, like this
parking bay.
These 12 brilliant ideas will surely form part of future smart city developments, but Sir George
Iacobescu, Chairman and CEO of Canary Wharf Group, could only choose one winner from each
category.
He chose Voyage Control and Polysolar as the overall winners, while Pavegen, 8point3 LED and
PIE Mapping received honourable mentions. They will all be given the opportunity to integrate
their products into the ongoing development of Canary Wharf, which will act as a showcase for
future smart city technologies.
It doesnt end there. The Cognicity Challenge features four more categories Integrated Resource
Management, Automated Building Management, Virtual Design & Construction and Connected
Home. That means another 24 brilliant ideas hoping to transform our cities into smart cities. Stay
tuned to IQ and well tell you all about them. Dean Evans (@evansdp)
