Was the League of Nations successful?
Yes
Successful in dealing with social issues
such as improving living and working
conditions worldwide through the
International Labour Organisation.
The League was also very successful in
dealing with health issues and it set up
commissions that improved living
conditions in poorer countries and
targeted the treatment of diseases,
significantly reducing the outbreaks of
leprosy in the world.
The League did have some success in
solving political disputes when it
completely solved three disputes and
partially solved two (p.48-49).
The role of the Treaty of Versailles? Solely to Punish the Germans or otherwise?
Punish the Germans
The German representatives were not
invited to the peace treaty negotiations
and given barely enough time to look
through the terms before they were
made to sign. Furthermore, Germany
was under an Allied Naval Blockade
which threatened to continue unless
the treaty was signed. The lack of
respect for the German representatives
and the conditions under they were
made to sign the treaty showed the
desire to use the treaty as an instrument
to punish Germany.
France made it clear that it wanted to
punish Germany and to prevent it from
being a threat to France again. As a
result, the French wanted to cripple
Germany as a military power. France
had suffered much physical damage
from the war and many French people

Most nations were unwilling to deal with
issues that threatened their nations
security. As a result, there was a gap
between what nations hoped to achieve
and what they were prepared to do.
The League was not successful in ensuring
that territories under mandate became
self-governing. This was especially so
with former German colonies that had
been been under the governance of
member nations under mandate.

The role of the Treaty of Versailles was
to bring about world peace and to put
aside the desire for revenge and to
make sure an event like World War
One never ever happened again. As a
result, the USAs leader, Woodrow
Wilson came up with the Fourteen
Points and pressed for the setting up of
a League of Nations. He wanted to put
the war behind and concentrate ona
new beginning. Furthermore, the USA
had no desire to punish Germany
severely like the British and the French.
