2.1.5.2. Earthquake load:

Earthquake actions are to be considered as variable actions and not combined with wind actions.

Structures:
Only linear-elastic analysis shall be performed. Depending on the structural characteristics of the
building, one of the following two types of analysis may be used.

i. lateral force method of analysis


ii. modal response spectrum analysis

a) Lateral force method


This method shall be adopted as normal practice if the structure satisfies both of the following two
conditions.
i. fundamental periods of vibration in the two main directions are smaller than the
following values.

T1 4 Tc, or 2.0 s whichever is smaller

ii. it meets the criterion for regularity in elevation, ref. BS EN 1998-1 section 4.2.3.3

b) Modal response spectrum analysis


This analysis shall be adopted when the structure does not satisfy the conditions set out in a).

This analysis should meet the following requirements:

- At least 90% of the total mass of the structure shall participate in all the modes considered
- All modes with effective modal masses > 5% of the total mass are considered.

If the above cannot be satisfied
