Lab 8 Filter designing using lumped component in ADS

Name Reg: No. Total / 10

8.1 Objective
The goal of this handout is to design, build, analyze and understand filter design using
lumped component in ADS software.

8.2 Equipment
ADS Software

8.3 Conduct of Lab

1. Students are required to perform this experiment using the equipment provided.
2. Students are required to work in a group of two.
3. In case the lab experiment is not understood, the students are advised to seek help from
the course instructor, lab engineers, assigned teaching assistants (TA) and lab attendants.

8.4 Theory and Background

Filters are used in a wide number of applications. Particularly in radio frequency
applications, filters are made in their LC form using inductors and capacitors. Typically they may
be used to filter out unwanted signals that may be present in a band above the wanted pass
band. In this way, this form of filter only accepts signals ay the cut-off frequency above or below
depend upon its property.
Filters using LC components, i.e. inductors and capacitors are arranged in ether a pi or T
network, as shown in figure below.

Figure 1

In order to provide a greater slope or roll off, it is possible to cascade several filter sections
and increase their order. We can create Low pass, High pass, Band pass and band reject filters
using lumped component. In next lab we will implement those types on microstrip and observe
their behavior using Vector network analyzer.
Figure 2

Above figure is showing the behavior of pi and T type of filters with Equal ripple and maximally
flat respectively according to our problem solution. Attenuation graph will help out to find out
the order of filter (n).

8.5 Procedure
1.5.1 Lab Task1: Design a Low pass filter of given problem using pi model
Q1. Design a maximally flat low-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 2 GHz, impedance of 50
ohm, and at least 15 Db insertion loss at 3 GHz. Compute and plot the amplitude response and
group delay for f= 0 to 4 GHz, and compute with an equal- ripple (3 Db ripple) and linear phase
filter having the same order. See the values of g1,g2,----, gn in Table 8.3,4,5 of Pozar book
1. Using pi model calculate the values of lumped element C and L using given formula.

Figure 3

2. Implement this circuit in ADS and paste your diagram and results of S-parameter below.
1.5.2 Lab Task2: Design High pass filter
Q2. Using above parameters in Q1, translate this circuit in high pass filter using translation form
2. Replace shunt capacitor with inductor and series inductor with capacitor of low pass filter.

3. Write down the calcualtion on page and implemnt the high pass filter on ADS Software and
the the results of S-Parameter below

8.6 Conclusion
In this lab we learn how to design, build, analyze and understand filter design using
lumped component in ADS software.
