Abstract

The hospitality industry comes under service sector where the biggest asset is their
employees and any injury or illness to major asset cause loss of business for the
organization, to prevent these hazards a training schedule need to planned for there
worker and it can be take place while employee working on there daily schedule, it is
not always mean to conducting a class for everyone but need to inform the staff about
risk and there solution or how to handle the situation.

Before starting any training need to what difference it will make on employees mind and
attitude towards health and safety of individual and organization, for positive result the
objective and end result of the program should be clear.

There are important five steps to implement health and safety training:

A. Deciding the training needs of organization.

B. Deciding the training priorities.
C. Training methods.
D. Delivering the training.
E. Success of training.
F. Less committed Management.
Also need to work on the barriers to implementing the training program of an
organization.

2
Introduction
The hospitality industry is large and diverse industry, as it is a service industry it
employees a large scale of people. And major risk of loss is manpower and there
service, which is main priority of the industry. There are always chances of accident and
rate is higher than other service sectors, these risks give unwanted cost to the
organization, which sometime costs higher than cost of training could have
implemented.

As per new legislation health and safety training should be part of the induction for all
staff members which requires it. It can help the organization in making more profit by
reducing the accident cost. (Health and Safety, 2006)

Staff Training:
Training means giving information to the staff they need to work carefully, helping them
to learn how to do something and what they should do and not do. Training isn’t always
about formal classroom courses. When applying effective behavioral involvement it
requires that all those involved in the interference are comprehensively familiar and
capable in the use of specific interference techniques. Staff training is an important
ground work to avoid any problem occurs in future through any proactive planning. This
may engage formal, informal or practical training. It is not important carrying out formal
training session or sending staff members to any security course or something. (Anon,
2009)

Why training is important:

It is important to know that, what difference it will make in staff members mind and
attitude towards health and safety. Staff members must develop and synchronized in
their skills. Training is hard work, which develop a set of courses and require hard
direction on part of the trainer. There is a legal obligation on health and safety training, it
is provide to all staff members who need it.

First need to know which are the hazards in the working place, need to prevent by
training of staff - There are problems at any workplace which can cause injury to the

3
employees and preventing accidents and illness to staff caused by work is main priority
for everyone at workplace it can be costly for both staff member and the company, work
injuries and illnesses donates to high turnover, sickness absence, compensation costs,
damage to property and asset, unhappy and less productive staff. And employees are
always important asset for any company.
The best strategy to prevent work injuries and illnesses is regular health and safety
training for staff members. Regular training helps people learn how to stay away from
risks. And there should always be communication line open between staff and
management and staff members also feels that company is serious about health and
safety of its employees. Which improve the service and commitment of staff and also
motivate them. (HSE, 1995)

Which factors can affect the training process:

Different people have different speed of learning and adaptation, they have different
need, individual capabilities and different level of experience. This whole health and
safety training program should have flexibility to treat with the individual differences and
able to teach everyone something about the requirement. Each one should have
importance when making decision about the training program.

Few factors that affects are:

Attention period of individual - When the session or the training activity does not cross
the attention capabilities of the staff members, they learn better and remember for a
longer time. So if you increase the time for training, the trainer should use different
technique to refreshing the interest of learner otherwise there is no use of session. And
spacing is very important in any teaching session a half hours session is always better
than an hour session, because when anyone comes after a break he/she will have a
refresh mind and will be capable of learn more about the topic. And you can take
session for a longer time.

4
Motivation - People will learn when they find something interesting and important for
them. No matter how important is the topic and knowledgeable trainer. They need to be
motivated about the topic to teach them better, telling them importance of the particular
session and how it can help them individually and to the organization also.

Realistic Focus - Health and security staff training should consider the realistic problems
and related event in past, for example 11 September in New York and 26/11 attacks on
Mumbai. These were the major threat in security and terrorism is the biggest threat in
the world now days. So taking these real life example, it can help learning better and
also motivates the staff to fight back these problems if occur in future.

Designing the training schedule - The objective of the health and security training
program should be accomplished without affecting the profitability of company and also
time allotted to the training should have minimum effect on daily schedule but it also
need to be cover in the duty time of individual, otherwise it will effect individual’s daily
schedule and can cause to demotivation. (Hospitality net, 2002)

Managing health and safety:

Motivating and encouraging the staff members to create a positive culture toward the
health and safety will result to reducing the accident and illness of staff, it is an example
of good management, which reduce the accident loss and damage to there major asset,
it is always better spending some amount on training than covering the damage cost.
Commitment is very important in the health and safety policy of any organization, these
policies should create considering the staff members on top. To ensure the success of
health and safety efforts, planning plays an important role. Planning includes setting aim
and objectives, identify and judging the risk factor, creating a positive environment and
many other management concepts used in hospitality industry.

After risk is measured, planning should include way to overcome these problems and
measuring the performance, by regular inspection before anything goes wrong, so that
major hazard can be reduced and also investigating after the accident and measuring
the loss and damage to asset, so that it can be prevented next time. All this gives you

5
space for improvement and information to get rid of major accident in future. A
occasionally auditing is always required to check the performance of health and safety
policies of the organization and to ensure that amount spent on safety and health is not
wasted. The auditing can be done by skillful internal staff or professional from outside to
ensure the performance. (Health and Safety, 2006)

Health and Safety training:

First need to show the commitment and dedication of the company towards the health
and safety, explaining the health and safety standards, telling staff rule, there
responsibility and requirements. It is not important to train every staff member at the
same level, many a time they have different responsibility, for example food service staff
do not need to train at same level of the kitchen staff a list of do’s and don’ts is sufficient
some time, a basic practical session is required. Taking industrial example of “Radisson
Hotel” New Delhi. They have well planned kitchen training schedule, how to use
equipment more safely and prevent from serious hazards, they have different session
for fire fighting and it planned like each day two employees from each kitchen have
particular timing for these training activities, which hardly impact the daily routine of
employee and work force is divided to other employees for that particular time.
For food and beverage service department have training session once kitchen’s is over.
Some staff, such as sous chefs or restaurant manager are at that position because of
the high level of education and training, so they should have trained at different level to
achieve the required outcome of training.
For different people and department have different set of rules and method of training.
Like managers and supervisors need to know what organization expect from them and
how they can deliver, they need to understand the health policies of company and what
is there role.
Other employees should trained to work safely without any risk, should be able to
identify the risk and the action should take if situation is created.
Now the trainer should do some background work before starting the training, first
accounting the knowledge, capabilities and experience of individual staff members and

6
the current job is not exceeding the capability of carrying the workforce otherwise it will
increase the risk of unwanted things.
After dividing them as per individual skills, you will find that everybody have different
training need as per there work. So for freshers the basic induction training should
include how to work safely, evacuation from fire. Fresher are most likely to stick in such
situations because of less experience, so they should be main priority in any training
schedule.

There are important five steps to implement health and safety training:
 Deciding the training needs of organization:
Setting the goals and skill required for a particular job in the organization to work safely.
And than compare it with the current knowledge and skill of an employee to find the
gaps, which is require to compress by the training.
Estimate the risk to help finding the training need in the organization and discuss with
staff members for there view and what and how they want. Health and safety training
should be for everyone not only the frontline staff.
Risk to the business if they failed reducing the accident and finding the danger and its
cost.
 Deciding the training priorities:
First reading the laws for the training implementation, than main priorities should
consider, where lack of training or information was.
Training the fresher and youngsters should be main priorities of training session.
 Training methods:
There are many way to train the employees, but important is which method is more
effective.
Context based training – this method include relation to the job context, which ensure
the understanding of staff members.
Part task training – in this method task is divided in small parts and staff members are
trained individually.
Giving information to the staff and training in the classrooms.
Private training institute can help employees to enhance there knowledge.

7
 Delivering the training:
The information provided should be understandable to every individual.
Trainer should have enough time to prepare for session to deliver an effective session.
Timing of training should be like it does not affect individual schedule and also minimum
impact on organization also.
 Success of training:
Measuring the success of training by knowing that staff members have understood the
required thing and have appropriate skill and knowledge to tackle with any hazard in
future.
Do they are working as they were trained and improving the health and safety
performance of the organization. And what is needed to be trained next in the future.

The laws:
As per the health and safety at work act 1974, company need to provide all information,
training or instructions to there employee to ensure that the working area is safe for
there employees. Expanding these rules and criteria in 1999 it is necessary to identify
where health and safety training is required. For example fresher specially need to be
trained as per organizations environment, training should be provided in working hours.
(HSE, 2001)

Barriers to health and security training:

Barriers to training program need to be removed because a well planned health and
security training program can be unsuccessful if these are not healed, some of the
common barrier in training program can be –

Less committed Management:

Lack of commitment from management side can be the biggest barrier to effective
health and safety training program, organization still do not like to invest on security
training for non- security staff and some organization do not like to waste their
productive time in training the employees only at starting fresher are trained.

8
Employees’ confrontation to health and security training:
Lack of commitment is not only from management side but employees also some time
resistant to these training program, reason behind it can be unplanned and not
interesting training session or language barrier and some time the objective is not clear
to them so they loss interest in the program.

Taking health and security training lightly:

Many employees think that this training is very simple and do not need any presentation
or special timed schedule and many experienced managers or supervisors feels that
they are in this industry for many years and they have required information about health
and security, so these program are not only for fresher’s, not for experienced staff
members. But accident never be same so every body needs to trained for future
hazards to reduce the risk of accident. (Hospitality net, 2002)

9
Conclusion and Recommendation:
The hospitality industry is large and diverse service industry, which employees a large
scale of worker and has high percentage of risks, which need to reduce with the health
and safety training program, training does not always mean conducting some formal
classes, it is giving information to the staff they need to work carefully they can be
trained while they are working on daily schedule but it need a well planned training
program. It is need to understand the effect of training on employees. Before
implementing a training program need to find out the risk in the organization. These can
be reduced by motivating and make them learn the hazard and their remedy.

Now days there are many organizations which can help in training and reducing the risk,
so health of employees and security is getting better everyday by taking help from other
professional organizations in term of training their staff to work more efficiently and
regularly.

Procedure if Plagiarism Identified:

If a case of plagiarism is suspected (SDR 14.2):

The member of staff marking the work will seek a second opinion from another member
of the teaching team and, if suspicion is upheld, report the matter to the School
Academic Conduct Officer (ACO).

If the case is considered minor, a range of sanctions may be applied, including

reduction of the assessment mark.

If the case is major, the matter will be referred to a School Disciplinary Committee, who
will consider application of a broader range of more rigorous sanctions which range
from a nil mark for plagiarised assessment and hence failure in module to rustication.
