Dr. Read has over seven years of fam-
ily medicine experience, most recently at
Eastside Family Medical in Stanwood. She
has been a member of the active medical
staff at Kelsey Hospital since 2006, in-
cluding a member of the executive council.

patients needing hospitalization at Kelsey

One hundred miles, in today’s
fast-paced world is a little longer
than a quick trip from the DTE En-
ergy’s Detroit headquarters complex
along I-96 to their Lansing office.
Now for most of us, anything of that
length requires at least a V-6 auto
or a plane ticket. However that is
not the case for one of DTE’s more
daring (and fit) employees, Mike
Demos, supervisor, Gas Operations
in Mt. Pleasant.
For the second year, Demos is
embarking on a bike journey over
hill and dale from the DTE Energy
office in Kentwood, a suburb of
Grand Rapids, to his office in Mt.
Pleasant. The goal of this year’s cen-
tury ride, like last, is to raise aware-
ness and support for the upcoming
United Way campaign. This endeav-
or started last year after discussions
with his staff about the needs of the
United Way and how they could
build more energy for United Way
contributions. Demos’ passion to
support United Way came out of a
family member’s personal need that
was met by a United Way agency.
Demos ‘volunteered’ to ride from
Kentwood to Mount Pleasant as a
challenge to his ‘guys’ as he likes to
call the staff in Mt. Pleasant. Local
799, that represents some of the DTE
Energy employees, was quick to lend
its support. So Mike set about plan-
ning and executing the ride.
Last year, Demos was supported
by his wife, Tracy, also a DTE Ener-
gy employee, and friends from Local
223 and 132. He was, however, the
sole rider in 2009, but this year’s

The Montcalm County 4-H Fair Board
is pleased to announce Sackett Potatoes of
Mecosta has donated $5,000 to the New Fair-
grounds Building Project.
“We think this is a very worthy cause,” Alan
Sackett of Sackett Potatoes said. “We have al-
ways tried to support the community and es-
pecially the youth who are interested in agri-
culture. This project fits in with both of those
goals.”
Although Sackett Potatoes headquarters is
located outside of Montcalm County, Alan Sack-
ett explained the farming operation includes
more than 1000 acres in Montcalm County
and a potato storage facility near Greenville.
Sackett farms with his two sons, Jeff and Brian
Sackett.
Sackett said he believes it is important for
youth to become involved in activities such as
4-H or sports.
“It is an excellent way for youth to learn
about responsibility and to care about some-
thing besides themselves,” he added.

Arthur Roberts
Arthur Roberts age 68 of How-
ard City passed away Aug 14, 2010,
at his residence.
He was born Sept. 6, 1941 in
Grand Rapids the son of Herman
and Isabelle Williams (Nestle) Rob-
erts. Art worked at Sparta Foundry
for approximately 22 years. He
then worked in retail for another
20 years working at the Quik Stop
as well as the Viking Mart. He
loved playing softball, bowling,
and spending time with family and
friends. In 1962 he married Shirley
Phelps, who survives.

Swine Jobs School: Employment opportunitines in rural communities
Hog farmers in Michigan need well-
trained staff members to work in highly
skilled positions. That is where Swine
Jobs School comes in.
Through a combination of classroom
instruction and hands-on learning on
local swine farms, Swine Jobs School
trains interested students for positions
on modern swine farms. The next session
of Swine Jobs School begins September
7, 2010. Classroom sessions will be held
at the Schoolcraft Township Building in
Vicksburg.
The school focuses on students who
have completed high school and are look-
ing for immediate employment or work-
ers who are currently unemployed and
looking for opportunities to re-enter the
workforce. The program is designed to
help students learn the skills they need
to work on swine farms, as well as the
job and interpersonal skills they need for
employment. The school is taught, orga-
nized and sponsored by Michigan State
University (MSU) Extension swine spe-
cialists and Extension educators.
During the first two weeks of Swine
Jobs School, the class meets for eight ses-
sions that combine classroom instruction
and on-farm, supervised training. These
sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
from September 7-10 and from Sept. 13-
16. Over the 9 weeks of the school that
follow, students will spend 16 hours a
week gaining on-farm work experience
on local swine farms. Work experiences
will be arranged to meet the needs of the
students and the schedules of the host
farms.
According to Jeff Taylor, produc-
tion manager for Circle K Family Farms,
L.L.C. and Lafayette Pork Production,
L.L.C.; Swine Jobs School graduates
have a greater opportunity for success
than other new employees entering their
system.
“We are very pleased with the Swine
Jobs School graduates currently work-
ing on our farms,” Taylor said. “We pay
them a competitive wage and allow them
the opportunity for advancement. Swine
Jobs School graduates come into our
system better prepared for the positions
with a greater chance of success than if
we hire new employees with the intent of
training them internally.”

The bride was given away by her son, Derrick

The reception was held at the Newaygo County
Sportsmen’s Club. The bride is a hair stylist and
certified nurse’s aide. The groom is the owner of
Shane’s Small Engine Repair & More in Howard
City.
The couple will reside in Howard City.

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Vicky Paulen.
Approval of Minutes: Motion by Toni W. to approve the July 14, 2010 minutes as read. Seconded by

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Linda G. passed out an updated report. Brenda B. made a motion to accept
the Treasurer’s Report as presented, seconded by Renae B. All approved. As a result of resignations of
former members of the FOL, the following motions were made: Motion by Betty M. and seconded by
Toni W. to remove the names of Rebecca Smith and Pat Jacobus from the FOL checking account through

Director’s Report: Janice W. thanked the FOL for their support of the recent millage vote that passed.
She also presented a letter from Cheryl Smith, Children’s Librarian, requesting money to purchase books
for the 2011 Summer Reading Program. The books are purchased throughout the year. Motion by Renae
B. seconded by Lavonne R. to contribute $500 to the reading program. All approved.

The laws signed March, 2010 by President Obama include $500
billion in Medicare savings over the next 10 years. In part, those

readmissions. Currently, $20 billion is spent every year on the

Pilot programs to test new ideas – like electronic record-keeping
- to improve quality and simplicity
Hospital acquired infections are a growing problem. Hospitals
will have to solve the problem. Starting 2015, Medicare pay-
ments will be reduced for hospital-acquired infections.
A new website in 2011, will compare physicians on quality mea-
sures.
Perhaps the best is a shift in Medicare payment philosophy. To
encourage primary care docs to take Medicare patients, from
2011-2015, primary care docs will receive a 10% bonus for
treating Medicare beneficiaries. Where there are no specialists
and only primary docs available, now many older people will
get care.
