Adequate identification of all items associated with each lot of parts shall be
maintained throughout the surface preparation operation. Where necessary
wired-on metal tags shall be used.
Surfaces that contain grease or other foreign matter that may contaminate the
abrasive grit blast unit shall be thoroughly cleaned by burning, buffing, or washing
with solvent prior to abrasive blasting.
All metal surfaces to which rubber is to be adhered shall be abrasive blasted. All
oxidation must be removed.
Surface care must be exercised when handling freshly blasted metal to avoid
contamination of the blasted surface.
Abrasive particles shall be removed by brushing or blowing with filtered
compressed air. Both brushes and compressed air shall be clean and oil free.
Very minor grease spots or other contamination on the blasted surface may be
removed by thorough washing with a non-carcinogenic solvent and thoroughly
dried before the application of any adhesive.
Any areas of contamination larger than 80 mm in diameter shall be cleaned and
re-blasted.
Bare metal surfaces shall be coated with an adhesive primer immediately after
abrasive blasting. When abrasive blasting resumes, the blasting shall be carried

conditions or when the ambient or metal temperature is below 15 C or when the
relative humidity is greater than 70%, unless the Contractor/Vendor can
demonstrate by means of a test piece that a successful application can be made
at conditions outside these limits. Under no circumstances shall linings be applied
when the humidity exceeds 85%.
Precautions shall be taken to prevent deposition of atmospheric moisture on
adhesives, rubber and prepared surfaces to be lined, during the lining operation.
This shall be achieved by overhead covering of the workface, advance protection
of surfaces by tarpaulins and, when necessary, use of hot air fans.
Where practical, exposure to direct sunlight shall be avoided.

A separate brush or roller shall be provided for each and every adhesive and
under no circumstances shall they be used interchangeably. An acceptable
method of identification is the use of metal tags nailed to the brushes or rollers
with the cement number punched on them.
Each adhesive coating shall be inspected for runs or excess build up prior to
application of each succeeding coat. When prolonged time occurs between coats
of adhesive or after final coat of adhesive, but before rubber lining, a protective
cloth shall be draped over the adhesive's surface to prevent contamination.

5.5.7 Lining Procedures

The lining shall be applied in accordance with this specification or in accordance

with the Contractor/Vendor's standard practice provided the details shall have
been approved in writing by Aker Solutions.
Linings shall be completely bonded to the surfaces. The lining Contractor/Vendor
shall use particular caution to avoid air entrapment during the application of the
lining, especially at the splices. If air is trapped, either between the rubber and
metal or between the rubber plies, the Contractor/Vendor shall puncture the
blister with an awl and press out the air. The area shall be cemented and patched
with a piece of lining the same gauge as the lining and shall extend 50 mm
around the awl hole.
Tensioning and bridging of the lining shall be avoided.
Linings shall cover the surfaces of the steel or concrete as shown on platework
drawings and Data Sheets.
All edges and seams shall be laid straight. Lining sheets shall be applied by
lapping. In general, edges shall overlap by at least 75 mm. When joints are
impractical, butt joints with the seams covered with sealing strips shall be used.
Overlapping edges shall be skived to an angle of 45C and turned down to give a
smooth, neat appearance. The number of seams shall be kept to a minimum
consistent with good workmanship. The bond between overlaps shall be such
that separation cannot occur without tearing the lining.
Overlap scarf joints shall be made so that the overlap follows the direction of flow.
If the direction of flow is not obvious, The Contractor/Vendor shall contact Aker
Solutions for a recommendation prior to application.

5.5.8 Rubber Lining Curing

Vulcanization of the lining shall be carried out by one of the following methods:
autoclave vulcanization
steam or hot air vulcanization at ambient pressure
hot water vulcanization

Q:\Shared\R0534200\01_Eng_Doc\06_Mec\03_Technical_Specifications\02_Int_App\000-TS-M-296A Chutes, Platework &

Rev. 1

self vulcanization at ambient temperature

Note: Vulcanization is not required on pre-cured materials.
Vulcanization with steam under pressure is the preferred method for curing
rubber lining and rubber coatings. Autoclave or internal steam pressure curing is
preferred.
Atmospheric pressure steam or boiling water cure is permitted only in those
cases where pressure cure cannot be achieved. A tank or sump can be capped
or boarded up to serve as its own autoclave only if it is built to withstand the
required pressure.
Areas which are below the specified minimum hardness after curing shall be
given additional curing with heat lamps, partial shielding and heating, or other
established rubber curing procedures to bring these areas up to the specified
hardness. In areas requiring additional curing, the periphery of the under-cured
area shall be shielded to prevent over-curing on the adjacent area.

5.5.9 Inspection and Testing

Before curing, Aker Solutions shall inspect the completed lining against the
relevant drawings to ascertain that the correct areas have been rubber lined and
that the requirements specified hereunder have been met. On site lined items
shall be inspected on a daily basis as the lining progresses.
If dimensional tolerances are given, it may be easier to modify the lining
thickness before cure rather than after cure. The Purchaser shall also determine
that all components associated with a particular job are together and completed.
The thickness of the lining applied on carbon steel shall be determined with a
suitable thickness meter and shall conform to the agreed thickness within a
tolerance of + 10%. A minimum of 3 measurements per square meter shall be
made. For large surfaces the maximum number of readings shall be agreed
between the Contractor and Aker Solutions. The thickness of the rubber lining
applied on concrete shall be determined destructively.
The general appearance of the rubber surface shall be inspected. Any defects
shall be noted and shall be repaired by the lining Contractor/Vendor to the
satisfaction of Aker Solutions.
All splices shall be inspected for looseness and uniformity.
The finished lining shall have a smooth, workmanlike appearance. Linings shall
be free of voids, blisters, pinholes, cracks, open seams, entrapped air and any
other defect which would prove detrimental in service. Defective areas greater
than 0.1 m may be cause for rejection of the complete lining.
Localized defects, pinholes, blisters, or un-bonded areas shall be repaired by
cutting the affected areas back to the base metal and patching with the same
type of lining material as that used initially. Covering patches shall overlap the
sound material by at least 75 mm.

Air pockets shall be repaired before the final cure performed.

Finished lining which is not in accordance with this specification or in which
injurious defects, improper application and excessive repairs are indicated shall
be subject to rejection.
High-voltage spark tests shall be made before and after vulcanizing (a minimum
of 15 kV and a maximum of 40 kV shall be used). These tests shall consist of
grounding the steel members, and passing a searching electrode across the
entire lined surface. If any defects are revealed, proper repairs shall be made,
and the repaired area shall be retested to ensure that the defect has been
eliminated. Such repairs shall meet the required specification and be to the
satisfaction of Aker Solutions or his Representative.
After cure, an inspection similar to that made before cure shall again be made by
Aker Solutions
A complete spark test of steel lined vessels shall again be made and any defects
shall be repaired and retested to the satisfaction of the Aker Solutions.
The bond between the lining and the metal surface and between lining overlaps
shall be random checked by thumb pressure. Any areas of separation greater
than 25 mm wide by 3 mm in depth shall be rejected. If more than five defects
are detected, as defined in ANSI/ASTM D 3486, within any 10-square-metre area
(except weld areas of the substrate) that entire section of the lining shall be
stripped and relined/recoated in accordance with this specification.
Blisters, or other defects in the lining detected at the weld areas of the substrate,
shall be repaired in accordance with approved rubber lining repair procedures. A
maximum of five patches per 30 linear meters of weld shall be permitted. Any
area which has an excess of five defects in any 30-linear-metres areas of
substrate weld shall be stripped and the defective weld in the substrate shall be
repaired and relined in accordance with this specification.
The lining shall be spot checked for hardness by means of a Durometer at an
atmospheric temperature of approximately 20C. This check shall be carried out
at five locations per panel selected by Aker Solutions. The indentation readings
(hardness number) shall be within the range of values specified in paragraph
5.5.2 of this specification. If the hardness is found to be out of the specified
tolerance, Aker Solutions shall be advised in writing and held pending further
instructions from Aker Solutions.
A test plate of approximately 250 mm in diameter shall be covered by rubber
using the identical procedure to that used to line the equipment. After the
adhesive has cured, Aker Solutions shall attempt by means of pliers or other
tools to separate the rubber from the test plate. If complete separation can be
achieved along at the adhesive line, the lining of equipment may be subject to
rejection. If fifty percent of the separation is through the rubber, or no separation
is possible, the cure sample is acceptable. This test is not intended to replace the
other tests called for in this specification, or the complete visual inspection of the
