CRAFT PORT/TELNET

1. SCOPE
1.1 This section describes the implementation and operation of the craft port software features in the EdgeLink
Hub.

1.2 Whenever this section is updated, the reason(s) for reissue will be listed in this paragraph.

2. CRAFT PORT DESCRIPTION

A. General Description

2.1 The Craft Port feature is a firmware function of the Controller Module. It is menu-driven and provides the
user with a method to monitor, control, and provision the EdgeLink Hub system. It supports performance monitor-
ing and control functions such as performing loopbacks (DS-1/DS-3), switching, NIU status and control, BER test-
ing, clearing TMS condition, setting LAPD parameters for data collection, and checking for the number of
switches and errors.

B. Craft Port User Interface

2.2 The Craft Port User Interface presents the user with an interactive, text-based, menu-driven interface that
configures, monitors, and controls the ELHUB system. By connecting a terminal or modem directly to the craft
port terminal interface (a DB-9 male connector) on the front of the Controller Module, the user gains access to the
Craft Port menus.

2.3 The menu structure is a "tree" format with descending selections becoming more detailed until the com-
mand is executed. (The operator must press the ENTER key after each entry.) Messages, acknowledgments, and
error messages are displayed in response to the requested action. If illegal commands are attempted, the system
provides responses that allow analysis or correction of the problem. If the terminal is idle for 10 minutes or is dis-
connected, the session is automatically terminated by a default timeout mode. This mode can be disabled in the
System Settings menu. The path from the Root Menu is C, 1, 4, 7. Enter each character (e.g, “C”) followed by the
ENTER key.

C. Craft Interface Terminal Connector

2.4 The EdgeLink Hub provides an RS-232D serial communications port for a direct or modem connection to
a "dumb" VT-100 terminal or a PC configured for VT-100 terminal emulation for craft port functions. The craft
port is accessed through a DB-9 male connector on the front of the Controller Module (leftmost slot of the cage).

D. Craft Port Specifications

2.5 Table A lists the specifications for the craft port.

Table A. Craft Port Specifications

3. TELNET DESCRIPTION
3.1 The ELHUB software supports a single Telnet client connection (Port 23) for accessing the craft menus.
When the local craft port is being used, the user is prevented from establishing a Telnet session; local craft port
access and Telnet access cannot occur simultaneously. However, the user can establish a TL1 Telnet session (port
3116) and perform TL1 commands at the same time. A Telnet session (port 23) will be disconnected if and when a
local craft session is started; if a Telnet session is active and someone logs into the local craft port, the Telnet user
will be immediately disconnected.

NOTE: Telnet sessions must be re-established following a System RESET.

3.2 By design, a Craft session has priority over a Telnet session; if a Craft session is active, the Telnet session
cannot terminate that session. A problem could arise if the 10-minute Telnet timeout feature has been disabled
and an active Craft session is left running. In this case, the operator will be prevented from establishing a Telnet
session at the remote ELHUB. However, the following command (not a TL1 command) allows the operator to
close the Craft session remotely from the TL1 Telnet connection (Port 3116): logout-craft-password

- Press the ENTER key after typing the logout-craft-password command. Enter the system
password (e.g., TELCO). Asterisks will be substituted for the password characters.

4. CRAFT PORT CABLING

A. Craft Terminal Cable - AWX452G10

4.1 The AWX452G10 cable is used to connect the EdgeLink Hub to a VT-100 terminal or a personal computer.
One end of cable is a DB-9 connector that connects to the DB-9 connector located on the front of the Controller
Card and the other end is a male DB-9 connector for the terminal or personal computer. Refer to Figure 1 for the
pins and their description for the cable.

4.2 The AWX510G10 cable connects the cage, using a male DB-9 plug, to a modem with a male DB-25 con-
nector. This cable is used when accessing the unit for craft functions using a remote terminal and modem connec-
tions. Refer to Table B for the pins and their description.

C. Craft Port Cabling

4.3 Figure 2 illustrates the cabling of a EdgeLink Hub cage. An AWX452G10 cable can be used to connect the
craft port from the DB-9 connector (CIT) on the front of the cage to the VT-100 terminal. An AWX510G10 cable
can used to connect the DB-9 CIT connector to a modem.

NOTE: The maximum baud rate cannot exceed 9600 bps.

5. TERMINAL SETUP AND LOGIN/PASSWORD REQUIREMENTS

A. Terminal Setup

5.1 The VT-100 or PC terminal must be configured so that it can communicate with the EdgeLink Hub multi-
plexer. Configuration of the terminal should be done before it is connected to the cage. See Table C for a list of
parameters that must be set on the terminal. The maximum baud rate cannot exceed 9600 bps.

Local Echo: OFF
Column Width: 80
Baud Rate: 9600 bps maximum
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Parity: None
Flow Control : None
Duplex: Full

B. Terminal Login

5.2 When the terminal is powered on and connected to the craft port of the cage, the user should wait approxi-
mately 5 seconds and then press the Return key twice for the "ID:" prompt. At the prompt, the user must enter the
password, which is masked from view during entry on the keyboard. Use of a valid password allows entry to the
various Menus.

C. Password

5.3 A terminal connected to the craft port interface requires a password to gain access to the unit and all the
menus for configuration and retrieval of information. The factory default setting for the password is "Telco”. When
the EdgeLink Hub is installed for the first time, it is recommended that the user edit the default password ("Telco")
for security. The password is limited to 30 alpha-numeric characters (not case-sensitive), but spaces are not
allowed. When editing the password, the user is required to enter the new password only.

5.4 The System Name, Contact Person, and System Location are each limited to 30 characters including
spaces.

6. DEFAULT SETTINGS
6.1 The System Administration menu is used to reset non-volatile RAM to factory defaults, one card at a time,
which includes the default password of “Telco”. All default settings are provided in Table D on page 7.

CAUTION: Resetting the system to factory defaults should be done only in a non-traffic carrying system.

7. DS1 AUTO-SENSE FEATURE

7.1 The purpose of the DS1 Auto-Sense Feature is to minimize the need for human intervention during an ini-
tial install or during the populating or depopulating of DS1 ports.

During an initial install, Auto-Sense, if enabled, will scan all DS1 ports. All ports that have activity (DS1
signaling) applied, will be automatically placed in an Equipped, In-Service and Monitored state. Channels
that do not have activity applied are automatically placed in Unequipped, Out-of-Service, and Waiting
state.

Applying an active DS1 signal to a Waiting channel will automatically configure the channel to an
Equipped, In-Service, and 5-minute Timer state. Newly activated channels go into a 5-minute timing
interval to insure the signal is valid before allowing any Alarm reporting for that particular channel.
Removal of channel activity prior to the lapse of 5-minutes will cause the channel to revert to back
Unequipped, Out-of-Service, and Waiting.

When a DS1 signal is applied to a channel and completes the 5-minute time period, it will then enter into
In-Service, Equipped, and Monitoring mode. The 5-minute Time Period may be overridden by performing
a RESCAN, which forces an Active Channel to In-Service, Equipped and Monitored. Rescan forces an
inactive channel to Unequipped, Out-of-Service and Waiting.

When a DS1 channel is Unequipped, that channel will not be monitored, report alarms or cause switching.
When a DS1 channel is Equipped, it can be In-service or Out-of-Service and will be monitored and will
report alarms. In order for the channel to cause switching it must also be In-Service.

When a DS1 channel is disabled, the channel will generate AIS in both the Mux-up and Demux directions,
thus prohibiting Traffic and distinguishing Service from an Outage on that channel. The DS1 Interface
Status Screen displays Status information for each of the DS1 channels.

Line Code "Lcode" can be set to either AMI "A" or B8ZS "B". Line Buildout "LBO" is set to the correct
range measured in feet. LoopBack "LPBK" may be set to None, Facility, Terminal, or Remote Terminal.
Service Mode "SVRMODE" is set to either In-Service or Out-of-Service. Equipment State "EQUIP" can
be Equipped, Unequipped or Disabled. Input Activity "ACTIVE" is either Active or No Activity. The Mask
State "MASK" will be set to Monitoring, Waiting. Timer, Status, or Alarmed.

NOTE: Out-of-service mode is generally a maintenance mode used primarily for setting configurations
and performing loopbacks. Traffic is still being carried while in this mode, but alarms/events occurring
during this time will not be reported.

9. APPLICATIONS

A. Ethernet and CIT Cabling

9.1 Figure 3 illustrates the connection of multiple EdgeLink Hub units at one location to a 10BASE-T Ethernet
local area network (LAN). Using the SNMP at the Network Management Station (NMS) or Telnet, a user can mon-
itor and configure the far-end EdgeLink100 over the C-Bit Supervisor Channel. Craft port access using the CIT
port on the front of the unit can be made locally using a terminal.

CRAFT PORT/TELNET

10. CRAFT PORT/TELNET COMMANDS AND MENUS

A. User Convenience Features

10.1 The Craft Port software provides the following features to improve usability:

• Flashing active alarms on Root Menu

Whenever an alarm condition occurs on any of the DS3 modules, including the Protection Module,
the affected module displayed in the Root Menu will change color and flash continuously (see
Figure 4 on page 16). An asterisk will appear in front of the affected module. This feature allows
the user to be notified of a new alarm even at a distance from the computer terminal. Press CTRL-
V to check the alarm status.
• Ability to name each DS3 module to differentiate it from the others.
By default, each of the nine DS3 modules is identified as simply “DS3 Module” in the Root Menu
display. However, any of these modules can be identified in a more meaningful way (e.g., T3 to
Boston). To name a DS3 Module, at the Root Menu, type X, 6, 3, 1. Press ENTER after each selec-
tion. Enter a module description using up to 30 alpha-numeric characters.
• Ability to name each DS1 channel to differentiate it from the others.
By default, each of the 28 DS1 channels is identified by its channel number. To give a DS1 channel
a name, at the Root Menu, type X, 1, 2, C#, 3. The “C#” is the channel number. Press ENTER after
each entry. Enter a description using up to 15 alpha-numeric characters.
• DS3 module configurator to copy the configuration of one DS3 module to another or all.
In one step, you can copy the configuration of one DS3 module to another module or to all DS3
modules in the ELHUB. This feature is useful when identical or similar configurations are required
for multiple DS3 modules. To copy a configuration to another DS3 module or to all DS3 modules,
at the Root Menu, type C, 1, 6, 1. Press ENTER after each entry. Follow the on-screen selections to
complete the task.
• Shortcut keys to view alarms and event logs
To view current alarms for any DS3 module, type A# (the # represents modules 1-9). Type AP or
LP to view alarms or event logs for the DS3 Protection Module. For example, to view the alarms
for DS3 Module 1, type A1, then press ENTER. To view event logs for DS3 Module 1, type L1,
then press ENTER. A History Alarm Log for the module will be displayed showing alarm date,
time, state, and description.
• Shortcut keys to view DS3 module alarms and event logs from Controller menus
At the Controller’s current alarm log and event history log, you can view log information for a DS3
module or Protect Module. For example, at the Root Menu, type C, 2, 2, 2 to access the System
Current Alarms. At this menu, enter the DS3 Module slot number (or P) only. You are now in the
Current Alarms menu for the specified DS3 module. To return to the Controller menus, type CTRL
W.
• CTRL I for additional information
Some craft menus provide the option to type CTRL I to get additional information. Only menus
that do provide this function will display CTL-INFO in their screen at the help line.
