November Learning Goals
One of the main objectives of our data
MATH:
NUMBER SENSE:
represent, compare, and order whole numbers
to 20, using a variety of tools (e.g., connecting
cubes, ten frames, base ten materials, number
lines, hundreds charts) and contexts (e.g., real-
life experiences, number stories);
A stronger understanding of number
relationships will be the focus in mathematics
this month. Students will investigate the
different ways that numbers can be arranged
(e.g., 5 may be shown as 3 and 2, 4 and 4 or 5
and 0), how numbers relate to one another
(e.g., 7 is more than 5 and 5 is less than 7). Well
also explore number relationships beyond 10 as
well.
GRAPHING:
collect and organize primary data that is
categorical, and display the data using one-to-
one correspondence, prepared templates of
concrete graphs and pictographs (with titles and
labels), and a variety of recording methods (e.g.,
arranging objects, placing stickers, drawing
pictures, making tally marks) (Sample problem:
Collect and organize data about the favourite
fruit that students in your class like to eat.)
read primary data presented in concrete graphs
and pictographs, and describe the data using
comparative language (e.g., more students
chose summer than winter as their single
favourite season);
pose and answer questions about collected
data (Sample problem: What was the most
popular fruit chosen by the students in your
class?)
management focus this month will be to sort
and organize information into a variety of
graphs so that information can easily be
compared (through more than, less than and
equal to observations). Skills that are
fundamental to success in this unit include,
sorting, describing the similarity and differences
between objects and the ability count a set of
objects. As we move into interpreting graphs
your child will need to be able to discern more
than, less than and equal quantities.
SCIENCE:
We will be wrapping up our explicit
investigation of Fall, weather and daily and
seasonal changes and starting a new unit
around Materials, Objects and Everyday
Structures. We will revisit Daily and Seasonal
changes again in December when learning
about Winter.

LANGUAGE
READING & WRITING:
We will continue to focus on vowel sounds, digraphs, word families, segmenting and blending. Our
reading and writing program will focus on non-fiction retell and personal recounts while using the
terms: first, then, next, finally. We will also be starting small group guided instruction that targets
students individual reading needs.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES
NOVEMBER 22nd 26th

Report Cards: This month, all students in

Grades 1-8 will be receiving a Progress
Report. One of the things you will note is the
strong focus on learning skills and work Documenting our
habits. Studies have shown that this area is Seasonal Tree in October
the most important predictor of student
success. During the first term, and
throughout the year teachers will be
working with students to help them develop
learning skills and work habits in the
following areas:

responsibility
organization
independent work
collaboration
initiative
self-regulation
