What is polypropylene?

Polypropylene (PP) is one of the

numerous derivatives of propylene
CH3 - CH = CH2. Depending on the
type of polymerization and cataly-
sts used, the polymers may pre-
sent an orderly or disorderly confi-
guration. When polymers have a
regular arrangement of their
atoms, like in isotactic polypropyle-
ne, it is very easy for them to pack
together into crystals. But if there
is no order, packing cannot occur.
Infact there are various types of

Single-socketed PP pipes are sup-
plied in the following lengths: 150,
250, 500, 750, 1000, 1500, 2000 and
3000 mm. In order to avoid wastage,
500 mm length pipes are supplied
with sockets at both ends (apart from NOR
OD 90 and OD 60). Valsir also pro-
duces 5 m plain end pipes of diame-
ter up to 125 mm.

Packaging

To facilitate and ensure correct tran-

sportation and storage, packaging is
arranged as follows:

pipes:
- in wooden brackets
- in bundles fastened with plastic ele-
ments
- in cardboard boxes (small diame-
ters and lengths)

fittings, special items and siphons:

- cardboard boxes.

3 APPLICATION
APPLICATION
Valsirs Polypropylene pipes and fit-
tings can be used in the field of soil,
waste and rainwater discharge inside
domestic and industrial buildings.
The Standard (B application) speci-
fies the purposes of PP pipes:

a) soil and waste discharge pipework

for the conveyance of domestic
waste waters, low and high tempera-
ture (95C);
b) ventilation pipework associated
with a);
c) rainwater pipework within the buil-
ding structure.

The European Standard EN 1451

specifies also that:

- Pipes which are marekd with B

are intended to be used above
ground only.
- Pipes which are marked with BD
are intended to be used above and
buried in ground within the building
structure.
There are three pipe series: S 20, S
16, S 14, the only diferentiating factor
being the wall thickness (diameter of
all three is the same). Pipes of pipe
series S 20 are intended to be used
inside buildings only which are
marked with B. Valsir produces
pipes of pipe series S 20.
The S 20 series cannot be buried
in ground.
For use buried in ground within the
building structure are intended only
those pipes with nominal outside dia-
meters equal to or greater than 75
mm (marked with BD).

Transport, Storage and Handling

PP waste pipes and fittings are very

resilient but as with most systems,
trouble free installations can be assu-
red with just a little attention to the
correct transportation, storage and
handling techniques.
Wherever possible the pipes should
be transported on a flat surface and
when socketed they should be suita-
bly distanced. While handling the
pipes or fittings they must not be
thrown, scratched against hard surfa-
ces or dragged along the ground.
Protection should also be provided if
chains are used to tie down the load.
Attention should be paid on the buil-
ding site to avoid alteration of the
items by placing heavy material on
top of the pipes and also to avoid
that dirt, gravel or mud enters the
pipe or fitting as this could cause
damage to the ring seals inside the
sockets.
Pipes and fittings must be placed on
a flat surface to avoid deformities
over a period of time. The maximum
stacking height for pipes which are
stored for a prolonged period of time
should not be more than 1.7 metres
whatever the diameter. Open storage
where the pipes are exposed to
direct sunlight must not be for exces-
sively long periods of time (more
than 18 months).

22
Installation Fig. 9
Connection of PP pipes is extremely
simple. Each pipe is fitted into the
socket at the end of the other pipe or
= 90
fitting.
The seal of each connection is gua-
ranteed by a double lip ring seal.
Installation of PP is very easy but as
with most systems, trouble free and
safe installations can be assured with
just a little attention to the correct
techniques.
These techniques can be summari-
zed as follows:

a) The pipe should be cut with a fine

tooth saw and suitably guided to
ensure that all the cuts are square
(fig.9).
b) The pipe ends should be shaved
at an angle of approximately 15,
using an appropriate tool (Valsir
Bevelling Machine art.360 fig.10)
or with a fine file fig. 11. Fig. 10 Fig. 11
The resulting surface must be per-
fectly smooth so that the seal in
the socket where the pipe is to to
be inserted, does not get dama-
ged.
c) The ends of special pieces must
15
not be cut as this could create an
unsafe connection (fig.12).
d) Ensure that the inner surface of
the socket, the seal and the ends
of the piece which are to be inser-
ted are clean. Cover the latter with
a lubricant or if this is not available Fig. 12 Fig. 13
then soapy water can be used.
Do not use oil or petroleum grease
(fig.13).
e) The pipes must be fitted correctly
into the socket, in accordance with
the expected thermal movement.

If the pipe is not inserted far enough

then the seal cannot be guaranteed
or the pipe may become misaligned
with time (fig.14). If, on the other
hand, the pipe is pushed in as far as
the ledge, no allowance is made for Fig. 14 Fig. 15
thermal movement (fig.15).

23
f) Avoid misalignment of pipes as the
seal will not be in a position to Fig. 16
work correctly (fig.16).

g) It is advisable to cover the connec-

tions so there is no danger of
cement entering the pipe and
damaging the seal (fig.17).

Pipe Support
Fig. 18
For small internal distribution
systems in bathrooms and kitchens,
the pipes can be buried directly in the upper layer
cement (fig.18).
Where pipes are intended to carry
fluids at elevated temperatures,
these should first be covered with
heavy paper before being buried in
the cement. This is to allow for ther- lower layer
mal movement (fig.19).

24
Vertical Pipes
Fig. 20 Fig. 21
The installation of vertical pipes
does not involve any particular pro-
blem. Due to the presence of
sockets on the pipes (which also act
as expansion joints) and the redu-
ced length of the pipe sections
(which are produced at a maximum
length of 3 metres) no particular
measures are needed.
There are generally two possibilites:
a) the soil stack is buried in the
structure in correspondence with
the branch pipes on each storey
(fig.20);
b) free stack (fig.21).
In the first case, the fact that the
connection is buried in the cement
means that the pipe support is rigid
and no other measures are neces-
sary.
In fact the thermal movement of the
pipe is taken up by the socket in the
underlying floor. In order for this to
happen, the expected thermal
movement must be calculated as
previously described. anchor clip

If the pipe has been fully inserted in

guide clip
the socket then there will be no guide clip
remaing space for subsequent ther-
mal expansion.
It is important to note, that thermal
expansion can also result in the
deformation of the pipe.
Two styles of supports are required:
in the first case, general pipe sup-
ports must support the installation
but allow for thermal movement
along the length of the pipe. In the
second case, supports must be rigid
or braced so that the system is held
stationary and the thermal move-
ment of the pipe is taken up in the
fitting.
